The 1970s was the golden age of watch design as a wealth of creativity was unleashed both in terms of aesthetics and materials. The period also saw the emergence of timepieces with an integrated bracelet, including Girard-Perregaux Laureato whose unique look and compelling design features has captivated the interest of the public ever since its launch in 1975. An octagonal bezel sits atop a circular ring on a case whose lines transpire clear geometric forms. The surfaces are given an alternation of polished and satin-brushed finishing that emphasize the manufacture’s attention to details. Its bracelet is also famed for the way it envelopes the wrist, giving the wearer superior comfort throughout the day. The watch became a favorite of many collectors as a result.
Girard-Perregaux finetuned the Laureato design over the years. The most recent refresh was in 2017 when the fifth generation Laureato was unveiled in a 42 mm case size. One of the latest models in this line combines the meticulously executed 18K pink gold case with a black onyx dial that is crafted by the expertise of a specialist over 15 operations from onyx in its raw from to a finished dial. On the mirror-like surface, the pink gold GP logo is affixed to the 12 o’clock position with pink gold our markers for the remaining positions around the dial. Pink gold-plated hands serve to tell the time accordingly.
This high-end watch is powered by the in-house, self-winding GP01800-1404 movement produced by Girard-Perregaux. All 191 parts are finished to the level befitting the stature of the brand: circular graining on the mainplate, straight Côtes de Genève on the bridges and circular Côtes de Genève on the pink gold rotor that generates the full power reserve of 54 hours. Girard-Perregaux Laureato 42 mm Pink Gold & Onyx is not a limited edition but production volume will be understandably low, given the specific skills required to create each component of this refined timepiece.
