Drawing the spotlight since its initial unveiling, the #FR2NCK MULLER Vanguard marks the first collaboration between Franck Muller and Tokyo-based streetwear label #FR2. And what a delightfully quirky collaboration it is – especially as a Year of the Rabbit release.
The #FR2NCK MULLER Vanguard bridges Swiss luxury watchmaking and Japanese street fashion by fusing signature elements from each universe into a bold yet harmonious whole. Franck Muller adopted #FR2’s distinct design language and applied it to the Vanguard, whose timeless yet avant-garde aesthetic makes it a contemporary icon. The result is an edgy watch that unambiguously conveys the essence of street style.
The high-contrast, monochromatic look is captivating: the matte white dial serves as a sleek backdrop against which the black hands, markings and appliqué indices stand out. Almost immediately the eye is drawn to #FR2’s iconoclastic Fxxking Rabbits motif situated at 7 o’clock in place of the hour marker, the red eye of one of the rabbits providing the only spot of color on the dial. A judicious application of SuperLuminova makes the skeletonized obelisk hands, indices and graphical motifs appear luminescent in an absence of light.
In addition to the aesthetics the timepiece is notable for its use of cutting-edge material, being the first Franck Muller creation to use a new carbon-and-glass fiber composite noted for being light yet strong. A mix of carbon powder, glass fiber and a bonding resin, it is baked at 150 degrees Celsius for three hours under a pressure of 200 tons. The random variations under which the mixture is compressed means that the pattern of striations on each watch case is unique. Hidden from view but no less impressive is the MVT FM 800-DT self-winding movement, which has a power reserve of 42-hours.
The #FR2NCK MULLER Vanguard comes with a white nylon strap with black print. Made in a limited edition of 800 pieces and available only in Southeast Asia and Australia, it represents a rare instance of collaboration between the Swiss watchmaker and a select group of external brands – a marriage of creativity where each of the partners continue to maintain their own distinct identity.
