We often find ourselves considering the notion that Rolex is one of the world’s most celebrated architects – someone who conceives signature creations that stand the test of time, someone who strives to deliver that perfect balance of functionality, reliability and aesthetics.
The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller serves as a great example of how Rolex keeps the watch world going with important innovations while also preserving traditions.
First introduced in 2012, the 42 mm timepiece in the Classic range is presented by the manufacture as “an elegant watch for frequent travellers”. It fulfils this designation by way of a second time zone indication in an off-centre disc that occupies the lower half of the dial. This arrangement makes the Sky-Dweller the ideal timepiece to grace the wrist of individuals who frequently traverse the world either for business or pleasure, so that they will always know the time back home. Alternately, they can use the 24-hour time indication to show time in a second country of their choice when not traveling.
Setting both the local time and the reference time is made very convenient with the ingenious Ring Command system. Essentially, Rolex has developed and patented this mechanism for the global traveller to easily access the watch functions that need to be set. With the fluted rotatable bezel turned counterclockwise by three positions, the crown allows the user to set the reference time. With the bezel turned counterclockwise by two positions, the local time can be changed quickly and effortlessly without affecting the precision of timekeeping, thanks to the Rolex jumping hour hand. The hour hand is adjusted independently in one-hour increments, either forwards and backwards, leaving the minute and seconds hands unchanged.
Quite simply, this means you will be able to adjust the hour hand to the local time very quickly as soon as you arrive at your destination or even before you land. A third position (one click anti-clockwise) of the rotatable bezel would allow the user to set the calendar (date and month).
This brings us to the subject of the annual calendar. While most watches dutifully carry out a cycle of 31-day date indication, the
Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller is equipped with the Saros annual calendar: an ingenious mechanism patented by Rolex that automatically differentiates between 30-day and 31-day months. The months of the year are marked by 12 discreet apertures around the circumference of the dial, outside the hour markers, with the current month identified in red. These complications are built on top of the calibre 9001 with a power reserve of approximately 72 hours, making it one of the most complicated calibres ever made by Rolex.
Rolex has introduced the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller in various configurations and materials fitted with the Oyster bracelet: in yellow or white Rolesor (Rolex’s signature juxtaposition of 18 ct gold and Oystersteel), in 18 ct yellow or Everose gold. However in 2020, the new Sky-Dweller is fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet for the first time.
An Oysterflex bracelet combines the robustness of a metal bracelet with the comfort of the elastomer strap. Here, flexible blades of a titanium and nickel alloy are overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer that is resistant against environmental effects. It is equipped with a folding Oysterclasp in the same material as the Oyster case. In addition, it features the Rolex Glidelock extension system comprised of a rack located under the clasp cover with six notches of approximately 2.5 mm apart, allowing the length of the bracelet to be adjusted easily, and without tools, up to some 15 mm.
The new Sky-Dweller is available in 18 ct yellow gold with a black dial, in 18 ct Everose gold with a chocolate dial, and in 18 ct Everose gold with a white dial. They are waterproof to a depth of 100 metres.

Rolex’s creation of waterproof wristwatch marks a significant milestone in the watchmaking industry, as watches would not be able to serve their function if they are not protected from dust and moisture, which can cause clogging or oxidization inside the case.
The development of the Oyster Perpetual Submariner is attributed to the advent of scuba diving. Having already proven their success with the advent of the waterproof Oyster case that was patented in 1926, Rolex experimented with further improvements which culminated in the introduction of the Submariner in 1953 – the first wristwatch for divers that is waterproof to a depth of 100 metres. This was doubled to 200 metres in the following year, and then to 300 metres in 1989.
In 1969, Rolex unveiled the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date, adding the date function. Its waterproofness, then guaranteed to 200 metres, was extended in 1979 to a depth of 300 metres.
Besides build integrity, legibility marks another key consideration as diving is a matter of survival. The first Submariner is designed with hour markers in different shapes to enable instant and reliable reading. The watch was soon fitted with other technical innovations, such as a luminescent disc on the hour hand to clearly distinguish it from the minute hand and a crown guard.
Over the decades, Rolex went on to make further advances, and developed the Chromalight, a luminescent material that fills the hands and hour markers, emitting a blue glow in dark conditions which lasts up to two times longer than traditional phosphorescent materials. The same luminescent material is filled inside the capsule of the triangular zero marker on the unidirectional rotating bezel.
Other incremental improvements were made over the years and every detail is decided on the basis of necessity or functionality. More recently, with advancement in production technology and material sciences, Rolex developed Cerachrom bezel inserts that are virtually scratchproof and resistant to environmental effects.
All these improvements are present in the new generation
Oyster Perpetual Submariner and Submariner Date launched this year, in addition to a redesigned and slightly larger 41 mm case in Oystersteel, whose profile is highlighted by the light reflections from the case sides and lugs.
As noted earlier, the Oyster case is hermetically sealed and waterproof. One key element that attributed to this waterproofness is the middle case that is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel – an alloy particularly resistant to corrosion.
In addition, the screwed down case back and a Triplock winding crown jointly offer optimum protection to the watch movement, which, in this case, is the brand new calibre 3230. The movement offers enhanced precision and resistance to shocks and magnetic fields, thanks to the use of the Chronergy escapement, blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. Calibre 3230 also has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours due to the escapement’s superior efficiency and the new barrel architecture.
Meanwhile, the 2020 Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date brings an even greater variety of novelties. In addition to the variation in Oystersteel with a black Cerachrom bezel insert, there are three other versions in Oystersteel with a green Cerachrom bezel insert, in yellow Rolesor with a blue Cerachrom bezel insert, and in 18 ct white gold with a blue Cerachrom bezel insert. These Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date models are powered by the calibre 3235, which is used in the Submariner range for the first time. It shares the superior technical benefits found in the aforementioned calibre 3230, but with the addition of the date function.
All new Submariner and Submariner Date come equipped with a remodelled Oyster bracelet. The three-piece link bracelet, known for its robustness, is presently enhanced with the Oysterlock folding safety clasp and the Rolex Glidelock extension system. With 10 notches approximately 2 mm apart, it enables quick and effortless adjustment of the bracelet length. Additional ceramic inserts are located on the inside of the bracelet links of the 18 ct white gold Submariner Date in order to improve flexibility and longevity – a further reflection of Rolex’s thoughtfulness and dedication to quality.

The Oyster Perpetual epitomises the quintessential Rolex in many ways. Labelled “The Essence of the Oyster”, the Oyster Perpetual is the direct descendant of the world’s first waterproof wristwatch introduced in 1926 – it obtained the second part of its name from the perpetual rotor that self-winds continuously by using the kinetic motions of the wearer. Displaying the hour, the minute and the second, these are chronometer wristwatches in their purest form.
Representing both robustness and elegance, this Oyster Perpetual range is now available in five sizes, from 28, 31, 34 to 36 mm and a new 41 mm size – all with a domed bezel.
The Oyster Perpetual 41 timepieces and the brand new versions of the Oyster Perpetual 36 are powered by the calibre 3230, which debuts this year as noted in earlier pages, housed within the waterproof Oyster case with a Twinlock winding crown. And for the first time ever, the Oyster bracelet of the Oyster Perpetual 41 and 36 watches offer the Easylink comfort extension, allowing for swift adjustment of the bracelet length of approximately 5 mm.
The Oyster Perpetual watches are produced exclusively in Oystersteel. For Rolex, this high-performance material is the benchmark of stainless steel that has been used by the brand since 1985. It belongs to the 904L steel family, and is commonly utilised in the aerospace and chemical industries. Oystersteel provides excellent anti-corrosion properties while also displaying outstanding sheen.
The Oystersteel manufacturing process is not simple at all. It involves the metal being re-melted in a vacuum after the first casting, in order to purify the material and remove any inclusions that would diminish its properties at a later stage. In order to ensure quality, Rolex uses a scanning electron microscope, capable of detecting even the slightest structural or surface defect, to control each Oystersteel casting received. Only castings that meet the brand’s exacting specifications are accepted for in-house production of watch components.
Additionally, given their strength, specific tooling and production methods are required in the stamping and machining of Oystersteel components. Thermal treatments are also used to facilitate the production process. The final polishing imparts each watch component with the desired polished or satin finish.
The new Oyster Perpetual 41 shines with either the bright black dial with its formal, understated look or the bright blue dial which adds a dash of coolness – both with hands and hour markers in 18 ct white gold. The silver dial reveals more opulence with the use of 18 ct yellow gold hands and hour markers.
Both the Oyster Perpetual 41 and the Oyster Perpetual 36 are also offered in four lacquer dials in coral red, turquoise blue, green and yellow. The fifth dial option in candy pink can only be found on the Oyster Perpetual 31 and 36.

Oyster Perpetual watches are coated or filled with the Chromalight luminescent material for a long-lasting blue glow in the dark. Note also that the sapphire crystal of the new generation Oyster Perpetual has been applied with an anti-reflective coating underneath in order to ensure optimal legibility under all light conditions.
Excellent performance on the wrist is assured by the fact that all Oyster Perpetual watches have received Superlative Chronometer certification – a Rolex standard since 2015. The certification with the green seal and 5-year international warranty is awarded only after the fully assembled watches have successfully passed the series of in-house tests for waterproofness, precision, self-winding capacity and power reserve.
The tolerance range of Rolex Superlative Chronometer is +2/-2 seconds per day, more than twice that is required of an official chronometer’s tolerance of +6/-4 seconds per day.

Timeless and elegant, the Datejust watches exemplify the archetype of the Classic Rolex watch with aesthetics that never go out of fashion. Its name is derived from the fact that, back in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding wristwatch to feature the date indication via a window at the three o’clock position. All four novelties are powered by the calibre 2236 with a Syloxi silicon hairspring that is 10 times more precise against shocks than a traditional hairspring. Together with the patented Paraflex shock absorbers, the movement is able to deliver superior precision with a power reserve of approximately 55 hours.
