CHANEL’s latest capsule collection retraces the beginning of the maison.

CHANEL first participated in Watches and Wonders Geneva in 2022 when the event could be organised in its physical format once again. After three successful editions, the maison has become a permanent fixture at the largest and most prominent watch fair in the world. Each year, they capture the interest of journalists from around the world, and of course, their watchmaking peers, with the unveiling of timepieces that revolve around a particular theme. This year, they retrace the very origins of the house with the COUTURE O’CLOCK capsule collection. CHANEL Watchmaking Creation Studio Director Arnaud Chastaingt shares more.
The name of this new collection suggests that it is inspired by the origins of the House of CHANEL.
Yes, for the CHANEL HORLOGERIE COUTURE O’CLOCK CAPSULE COLLECTION, I have chosen to focus on the roots of the House of CHANEL, in other words on couture, the original profession of Gabrielle Chanel. So COUTURE O’CLOCK illustrates the meeting of two worlds of exacting standards, Haute Couture and Haute Horlogerie; two worlds separated by just one word as I like to point out! Two worlds of craftsmanship with many points in common, from studios reigned over by the same silence, to the concept of time, a foundation for one and an imperative for the other.
With COUTURE O’CLOCK, I wanted to open the doors to the Rue Cambon studios, a unique time and space governed by the rhythm of fashion collections. I wanted to plunge into the intensely focused atmosphere that is inherent to the patience and painstaking care demanded by Haute Couture, from the couture dummies to the huge tables on which patterns are created, where garments are traced, cut out, pinned, basted, interfaced, stitched, oversewn and braided, all with the same tools that Gabrielle Chanel used throughout her life: scissors – worn on a ribbon around her neck – a pincushion bristling with pins and needles, a thimble and spools of thread, as well as grosgrain ribbon, buttons, a tape measure and safety pins.
These are the tools – the instant identifying features of the world of couture, emblems of an inexhaustible heritage of style – that inspired me in designing the COUTURE O’CLOCK collection. They are at once a material and a framework within which I have enjoyed an amazing freedom in creating the watches I present every year: PREMIÈRE, J12, BOY·FRIEND, MADEMOISELLE PRIVÉ BOUTON, MADEMOISELLE PRIVÉ PINCUSHION.
What was your guiding principle?
Clearly it was Gabrielle Chanel, the couturier, expressed in two different ways. Firstly, the sewing box and its tools, such as pins and needles, thimble, tape measure and scissors, in a color palette accentuated by yellow gold and a predominance of black. Secondly, the spirit of Gabrielle Chanel as captured by her portrait in a variety of styles – as an emoticon, a cameo and a cartoon character. Each of them evoking Mademoiselle Chanel and her creative spirit, paying tribute to her and celebrating our origins, which clearly lie in the world of couture.
Which watch best illustrates this guiding principle?
All of them do in their own way! But the J12 COUTURE 38 MM is perhaps a particularly eloquent illustration: it is all black, from the bracelet to the ceramic case, and from the dial to the hands, which are the blades of a pair of scissors, while the seconds hand is a sewing needle. The design on the bezel recalls that of a tape measure and the motif on the dial evokes the squared paper of sewing patterns.
Gabrielle Chanel plays a central part in this collection.
Of course, which is why her portrait is featured on several pieces. In a highly cinematic black and white, it adorns the dial of the MADEMOISELLE J12 COUTURE. Mademoiselle is shown lost in thought on her legendary sofa on rue Cambon, while on a revolving disk behind her a collection of small tools from her world of couture, including a spool of thread, a safety pin and a thimble, powder-coated in gold, scroll across a black-lacquered background. Making a complete circle every 5 minutes, this decor unfolds amid the interplay of the glossy and matte surfaces of the ceramic and blackened steel. To highlight the whole ensemble, the interior of the bezel is lined with a gold braid. Even more precious, the bezel of the Haute Horlogerie version is set with a row of baguette-cut diamonds.
MADEMOISELLE J12 COUTURE and J12 COUTURE WORKSHOP AUTOMATON CALIBER 6 remind us that Mademoiselle, who turned the fashion world on its head, thought of herself first and foremost as a seamstress. “I am an artisan of couture,” she used to say; she never sketched her designs, but created them with her own hands on a couture dummy or one of her fit models, scissors in one hand, pins in the other.
It was in this spirit that I “dressed” PREMIÈRE RUBAN COUTURE. The case remains perfectly sober, but the strap is double-wrapped in black leather and printed with the markers and symbols of a tape measure and trimmed with gold leather. As it encircles the wrist, this tape measure seems to measure time. The restraint of the design is disrupted by the crown, which is adorned with a small charm of a winking Mademoiselle in the style of an emoticon, her hat embellished with a diamond.
And the same emoticon is found on the PREMIÈRE CHARMS COUTURE watch.
Yes, for PREMIÈRE CHARMS COUTURE I continued this play on the tools of couture but in a very different look. Its bracelet borrows the chain intertwined with leather, from the iconic CHANEL bag and adds six charms in black lacquer and steel coated with yellow gold (0.1 micron): a safety pin, a couture dummy, a spool of thread, a thimble, a label like the one sewn inside every CHANEL garment, a Mademoiselle emoticon and the PREMIÈRE case.
You have not forgotten the BOY·FRIEND watch.
In this couture version, I have dressed it in all-black, including the bezel, to show off the magnificence of the BOY·FRIEND COUTURE decor. The dial is lacquered in black to echo the finesse of a jacket lining in black silk. In a subtle play of tracing, the pattern of the famous suit jacket is revealed, recognizable by its silver-colored braid and gold-colored buttons embellished with diamonds. The jacket pattern lies flat, with lines of basting stitches that mark its structure. The bezel is adorned with a fine chain in yellow gold, like the one sewn inside every CHANEL suit jacket to ensure it hangs perfectly. The strap is black leather imitating grosgrain, edged with black patent leather and lined with bronze leather.
In the same spirit, CODE COCO COUTURE is also all black, since all its metal parts are in blackened steel. They highlight the black and golden bracelet, lined with a gold-tone leather and embellished with a host of symbols from the world of couture. A single princess-cut diamond, set on the second black-lacquered dial, adds the final touch to the restraint of the composition.
