ในประวัติศาสตร์ของวงการนาฬิกานั้น ไม่มีใครมีผลงานที่ทำให้มีการเอ่ยชื่อของเขามากเท่ากับอับราฮัม-หลุยส์ เบรเกต์อีกแล้ว และนาฬิการุ่น Marine Tourbillon 5577 ใหม่นี้ก็เป็นการเชื้อเชิญให้เราได้ย้อนกลับไปพูดถึงเกียรติคุณของช่างนาฬิกาชาวสวิสที่ไปศึกษาวิชาและก่อตั้งกิจการจนมีชื่อเสียงอยู่ที่ฝรั่งเศสผู้นี้อีกครั้ง

When it comes to making a mark in the history of watchmaking, Abraham-Louis Breguet is unmatched both in terms of significance and recurrence. The new Marine Tourbillon 5577 watch urges us to revisit two of the Swiss-born, French-trained watchmaker’s great achievements, with one of them being a world’s first invention.
Abraham-Louis Breguet was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1747. He relocated to Paris, France, in his teenage years to become an apprentice in watchmaking before setting up his own business and workshop in 1775 at the young age of 28. His passion for development and experimentation led him to create a wide variety of inventions that brought advancements to horology. The most notable of which was the tourbillon – that perpetual whirlwind that continues to excite watch collectors around the world to this day.
Having observed that gravity impacted the accuracy of pocket watches when they stayed in a rather fixed vertical position over a long period of time, Breguet thought to put the entire escapement in a revolving carriage that completed one rotation in a minute, thereby averaging out the deviations at all angles and achieving the best possible chronometry. He received a patent for his tourbillon invention on 26 June 1801, which lasted for only 10 years; other watchmakers were then free to adopt or further improve on the concept in their collective quest for accuracy.
This also rings true for the modern day Breguet company whose watchmakers and engineers have decided to fit the new Marine Tourbillon 5577 watch with the tourbillion carriage in titanium and the balance spring in silicon for improved performance and insensitivity to magnetic influences.
Marine Tourbillon 5577 represents the latest addition to Breguet’s Marine collection. First launched in 1990, the Marine is positioned as a more sportive and resistant family of timepieces. Despite being ocean-bound, it differs from the offerings of most other watch brands in that it was intended to ride the waves, rather than to dive below them, hence the absence of a unidirectional rotating bezel.
In fact, the collection was established on a very different historical foundation. It pays tribute to the success of Abraham-Louis Breguet in the production of marine chronometers – a vital tool for seafaring ships in his time. Those high-accuracy clocks in gimbal boxes enabled crews to conduct celestial navigation with greater precision. The earliest known evidence of marine chronometers by Abraham-Louis Breguet was documented in 1796, which suggested that he might have started work in this area about a decade earlier. Marine chronometer production by Breguet became more consistent in 1815 when he was appointed as the horologer to the Royal French Navy. He and his son, and subsequently his grandson, sold marine chronometers to merchant vessels as well.
Fast forward to the present, the Marine collection received a major refresh in 2018, setting the aesthetic details for all products we see today. This began with great fanfare when the Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887 was unveiled – its platinum version graced the cover of our March quarterly issue that year.
The new Marine Tourbillon 5577 we are showcasing now bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor. Produced in rose gold or platinum, its 42.5 mm case houses the self-winding, ultra-thin Calibre 581 that is as slim as 3 mm, thanks to the use of the peripheral rotor design. Its compass rose-engraved barrel stores a generous power reserve of 80 hours. On the dark grey dial for the rose gold version or the blue dial for the platinum version, the time indication is slightly off centred to the upper left in order counterbalance the tourbillon on the lower right. Choices of alligator leather strap, rubber strap or bracelet give potential buyers of this novelty the freedom to wear it in the way that best suits their lifestyle.
Breguet Marine Tourbillon 5577 is not a groundbreaking timepiece in the sense of delivering a world’s first on its own. Nevertheless, it manages to combine two noteworthy chapters within Breguet’s illustrious history into a singular product that is as wearable as it is relevant. The watch is, without question, a fitting addition to the ongoing narrative of Breguet’s horological development.
