การเดินทางของคนเล่นนาฬิกาจำนวนหนึ่งจะคล้ายกัน โดยเริ่มจากเรือนเวลาที่สะดุดตาตนเองหรือเรือนเวลาที่ทำให้เกิดความประทับใจเพราะได้เห็นอยู่บนข้อมือของบุคคลใดหรือแม้แต่ตัวละครในภาพยนตร์ก็ตาม จากนั้นเมื่อเริ่มศึกษาเรื่องนาฬิกาอย่างจริงจังมากขึ้น นักสะสมหลายท่านก็จะมีแนวทางที่ชัดเจนว่าตนชอบนาฬิกาสไตล์ใด บ้างก็เน้นคอมพลิเคชั่นอย่างเช่นโครโนกราฟหรือคาเลนดาร์ต่างๆ บ้างก็เน้นสไตล์อย่างเช่นนาฬิกาดำน้ำหรือนาฬิกานักบิน และเมื่อถึงจุดหนึ่งบางท่านก็อยากจะได้นาฬิกาที่มีความพิเศษของเทคนิคงานศิลป์ต่างๆ หรืออาจถึงขั้นนำภาพที่เป็นความประทับใจหรือมีความหมายสำหรับตนเองไปวาดบนหน้าปัดหรือแม้แต่แกะสลักไว้บนตัวเครื่องนาฬิกาในรูปแบบพีซยูนิคหรือหนึ่งเดียวในโลกด้วย เราจะไปดูกระบวนการพิเศษนี้ของ Blancpain กันครับ

ช่างศิลป์ทีมเล็กๆ ทีมนี้มีหน้าที่ผลิตผลงานนาฬิกาในคอลเลคชั่น Metiers d’Art ที่เราเห็นจาก Blancpain ทุกปี และยังดูแลเรื่องการเนรมิตนาฬิกาแบบพีซยูนิคให้กับลูกค้าของ Blancpain จากทั่วโลกด้วย กระบวนการนี้จำเป็นต้องอาศัยการวางแผนเป็นอย่างดีเพื่อให้เกิดลวดลายที่ลงตัว เหมาะสมกับเทคนิคที่เลือกใช้และพื้นที่ที่มีสำหรับการสร้างสรรค์
อย่างเช่นครั้งหนึ่งที่มีลูกค้าชาวไทยต้องการแกะสลักภาพวัดอรุณบนเครื่องนาฬิกา ทางช่างก็แนะนำว่าควรจะเลือกเอาดีเทลบางจุดบนองค์พระปรางค์มาเป็นจุดเด่น เพื่อให้เห็นลวดลายชัดเจนเมื่อผลงานปรากฏอยู่บนบริดจ์แต่ละชิ้นของเครื่องนาฬิกา เมื่อตกลงเรื่องแบบเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้วช่างจึงจะลงมือแกะสลักจริงด้วยเครื่องมือในสไตล์ที่ใช้กันมาตั้งแต่ยุคโรมันโบราณ งานแกะสลักหนึ่งชิ้นจะใช้เวลาราวหนึ่งเดือนก่อนที่จะเข้าไปอยู่ในเรือนเวลาแบบหนึ่งเดียวในโลกซึ่งจะเป็นความภาคภูมิใจให้กับผู้เป็นเจ้าของไปอีกนานแสนนาน
นอกจากการแกะสลักภาพบนเครื่องนาฬิกาแล้ว ทีมช่างฝีมือของ Blancpain ก็ยังมีความเชี่ยวชาญในการใช้เทคนิคงานศิลป์รูปแบบต่างๆ ทั้งแบบดั้งเดิมของวงการนาฬิกาอย่างเช่นงานเอนาเมลเพ้นท์ติ้ง (enamel painting) บนหน้าปัดทองหรือหน้าปัดพอร์ซเลนด้วยปลายพู่กันขนาดเล็กจิ๋ว จากนั้นจึงนำแผ่นหน้าปัดไปอบในตู้ที่มีอุณหภูมิสูงอย่างน้อย 800 องศาเซลเซียสขึ้นไปเพื่อให้สีเซ็ทตัว ตลอดจนเทคนิคที่ไม่เคยปรากฏในวงการนาฬิกา แต่ช่างของ Blancpain ก็ลองหัดจนทำเป็นแล้วนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในงานนาฬิกาเช่นงานดามาซีน (damascening) ซึ่งเป็นการตอกทองลงไปตามร่องของชิ้นงานแกะสลักจนเกิดเป็นลวดลายที่มีสีสันตัดกันดูมีมิติ หรืองานบินโชตัน (Binchō-tan) กับงานชากูโด (Shakudō) ซึ่งเป็นเทคนิคดั้งเดิมของประเทศญี่ปุ่นที่ Blancpain เป็นแบรนด์นาฬิกาแบรนด์แรกที่เลือกใช้เพื่อสร้างความแตกต่างบนผลงานของตนเอง

World of Watches Thailand visited Blancpain’s “The Farm” workshop where the brand’s artistic timepieces are painstakingly created by a handful of craftspeople.

Many collectors shared the a very similar journey. They were attracted to this world of watches (pun intended, of course) by a certain timepiece with a design that spoke to them, that one on the wrist of a famous person they admire or sometimes a fictional character even.
Once they have become more familiar with horology, they would develop their own collecting preferences. Some may focus on a certain complication such as the chronograph or the calendars while others may be more interested in the stylistic functionality like diver’s watches or pilot watches. A moment of enlightenment may follow if they are intrigued by the various artistic crafts and that possibility of having a particular image painted on the dial or engraved on the movement – this effectively makes the watch a piece unique for only them. We show you how this most special process is done at Blancpain.
Blancpain is located in Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. Here, in the embrace of the nature, a Le Brassus workshop called The Farm provides the necessary space for watchmakers to work in solitude, polishing and assembling the parts that combine to make a timepiece whole. One room in particular is dedicated as the working area for a small team of artistic craftspeople.
They are the talents behind every piece of work in the Metiers d’Art collection we have seen from Blancpain every year. Also, they are responsible for the creation of piece unique watches for the brand’s clients around the world. This is an elaborated process where careful planning is required in order to execute the best possible result, considering the desired image, the chosen technique and the available space.
A most relevant example for the Thai market is a project commissioned by a local collector. At that time, the gentleman wanted to have an engraving of the Temple of Dawn on the movement of the watch. The advice of the craftsmen was to focus on a particular component of the pagoda so that the details would have been most visible when appearing on the bridges. Once the design was finalized, engraving work would begin in the most traditional way, using the kind of tools that can date back to the time of ancient Rome. It takes approximately one month to engrave a movement before it goes into the case, making it a unique timepiece of pride for the watch owner.
Other techniques are also at the employ of Blancpain. The maison’s specialists are experienced in different forms of artistic crafts from the traditional staples of the watch industry to ones previously unused by the watch brands. They, of course, are skilled at enamel painting on gold or porcelain dials, using the tiniest of brushes. These dials undergo baking in an oven at the temperature of around 800 degrees Celsius to set the colors. Damascening, a technique previously not found on watches, was also mastered by Blancpain. It involves hammering of gold threads into the fine grooves of an engraved surface. The resulting piece of work is therefore highly dimensional and lifelike. Lastly, this small workshop works with ancestral Japanese techniques Binchō-tan and Shakudō – another first for the watch industry.
