ถือเป็นปีครบรอบสำคัญของ Fifty Fathoms ที่ Blancpain เล่นใหญ่อย่างต่อเนื่องจริงๆ เริ่มตั้งแต่การเปิดตัวนาฬิการุ่น Fifty Fathoms Act 1 ที่ให้ผู้สนใจเข้ามาจับจองโควตาผ่านทางหน้าเว็บไซท์กันในเดือนมกราคม ก่อนที่จะตามต่อเนื่องด้วยการเปิดตัวนาฬิกาดำน้ำแห่งอนาคต Fifty Fathoms Act 2 พร้อมกันทั่วโลกในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ แล้วจึงปิดท้ายด้วยการเผยโฉม Fifty Fathoms Act 3 ที่เมืองคานส์ ประเทศฝรั่งเศส หลังจากที่ค่อยๆ ปล่อยภาพทีละนิดให้คนนั่งเดาและลุ้นกันไปทั่วโลกอยู่พักใหญ่ และเราขอมอบบทความนี้ให้เป็นบันทึกของการเดินทางอันยาวนานถึง 70 ปีของ Fifty Fathoms จากปี ค.ศ. 1953 จนถึงวันนี้ …

ชื่อนาฬิกา Fifty Fathoms มีที่มาจากระดับความลึกในการกันน้ำของนาฬิกาดำน้ำรุ่นแรกที่คุณฌอง-ฌาคส์พัฒนาขึ้นมา ฟาธอมเป็นหน่วยวัดความลึกในอดีตที่เทียบเท่าประมาณ 1.8 เมตร ดังนั้น 50 ฟาธอมจึงเป็นความลึกประมาณ 91 เมตร อย่างไรก็ดี แม้ว่านาฬิกา Fifty Fathoms รุ่นใหม่ๆ จะดำน้ำได้ลึกกว่านั้นมาก แต่ Blancpain ก็ยังคงเก็บชื่อที่ดูลึกลับราวกับบทกวีที่น่าค้นหานี้เอาไว้ตราบจนถึงปัจจุบัน
อย่างที่เกริ่นช่วงต้นบทความว่า Blancpain แบ่งการฉลอง 70 ปีของ Fifty Fathoms เป็น 3 องก์ด้วยกัน เริ่มตั้งแต่นาฬิการุ่น Act 1 ซึ่งมีตัวเรือนสเตนเลสสตีลในรูปทรงของ Fifty Fathoms ปัจจุบันอย่างที่เราคุ้นตากันมานาน 20 ปี แต่ว่าลดขนาดจาก 45 มม. ลงเหลือ 42 มม. และมีการใช้หลักชั่วโมงสไตล์ใหม่ที่เอาสารเรืองแสงมาหล่อเป็นตัวเลขสามมิติเลยโดยไม่ต้องมีกรอบโลหะช่วงประคองด้านนอก ส่วน Act 2 นั้นเป็นนาฬิกาวัสดุไทเทเนียมที่มีตัวเรือนรูปทรงใหม่เพื่อการดำน้ำในแบบเทคนิคอลที่ลึกกว่าและยาวนานกว่าปกติโดยเฉพาะ และได้รับการจัดวางให้เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของไลน์นาฬิกาย่อยในชื่อว่า Tech เป็นที่เรียบร้อยด้วยฟังก์ชั่นการจับเวลาดำน้ำนานถึง 3 ชั่วโมงโดยไม่ต้องมีกลไกโครโนกราฟ
เท่ากับว่าหน้าที่การบอกเล่าถึงประวัติที่มาอันทรงเกียรติของ Fifty Fathoms ตกเป็นของ Act 3 แล้ว นาฬิกาลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่นจำนวน 555 เรือนชุดนี้เป็นเหมือนการนำเอานาฬิการุ่นสเปคทหารที่ Blancpain เคยผลิตให้กับกองทัพเรือของสหรัฐอเมริกาเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1957 กลับมาทำใหม่ โดยมีเอกลักษณ์ที่ชัดเจนที่สุดประการหนึ่งเป็นเครื่องหมายวงกลมบริเวณเหนือตำแหน่ง 6 นาฬิกาที่สามารถใช้เป็นเครื่องเตือนในกรณีที่นาฬิกาได้รับความเสียหายจากการปฏิบัติภารกิจครั้งก่อนหน้าจนมีสภาพไม่สมบูรณ์และมีน้ำรั่วซึมเข้ามาในตัวเรือนได้
ตัวเรือนขนาด 41.3 มม. ของ Fifty Fathoms Act 3 มีรูปทรงถอดแบบมาจากรุ่น MIL-SPEC เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1957 สังเกตได้ชัดเจนที่สุดตรงขาตัวเรือนที่ดูเรียวยาวกว่ารุ่นปกติ วัสดุที่ใช้ในการผลิตตัวเรือนเป็นอัลลอยของทอง 9 กะรัตสูตรเฉพาะของ Swatch Group ที่มีชื่อว่าบรอนซ์โกลด์อันประกอบด้วยทอง 37.5% และคอปเปอร์ 50% เพื่อให้เรียกว่าเป็นบรอนซ์ได้ สาเหตุที่ Blancpain เลือกใช้วัสดุสูตรนี้ในการผลิตนาฬิกา Act 3 ก็เพื่อให้ตัวเรือนมีสีใกล้เคียงกับนาฬิกา Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC บางเรือนในสมัยนั้นที่ผลิตด้วยวัสดุมัยล์ชอต์หรือเยอรมันซิลเวอร์ซึ่งเป็นอัลลอยของโลหะที่มีสีออกทองอ่อนๆ ซึ่งทาง Blancpain จะใช้ทองเร้ดโกลด์ 18 กะรัตไปเลยก็ย่อมได้ แต่หากเลือกเช่นนั้นจริงสีของตัวเรือนก็จะเข้มและทองมากจนผิดกับบุคลิกที่แท้จริงซึ่งต้องเป็นอุปกรณ์ทางการทหารที่ทนทาน
หน้าปัดของนาฬิการุ่นนี้เป็นสีดำแบบผิวด้าน ชื่อ Blancpain Fifty Fathoms พิมพ์เป็นสีขาวด้วยฟอนท์ชุดเดียวกันกับที่ใช้ในนาฬิการุ่น MIL-SPEC ดั้งเดิม สารเรืองแสงซุปเปอร์ลูมิโนวาที่ใช้ตามตำแหน่งหลักชั่วโมงและเข็มบอกเวลาเป็นสีเบจเพื่อให้ดูเหมือนเป็นนาฬิกาวินเทจจริงๆ และที่ขาดไม่ได้เลยก็คือเครื่องหมายวงกลมเหนือตำแหน่ง 6 นาฬิกาที่จะเปลี่ยนเป็นสีแดงหากมีความชื้นภายในตัวเรือนซึ่งจะเป็นการเตือนนักดำน้ำผู้ใช้นาฬิกาว่านาฬิกาเรือนนั้นได้รับความเสียหายจนน้ำสามารถเข้าสู่ภายในตัวเรือนได้แล้ว
แต่ในเรื่องของคุณภาพนั้น Fifty Fathoms Act 3 มีทุกสิ่งที่เป็นสมัยใหม่ อย่างเช่นขอบตัวเรือนแบบหมุนได้ทิศทางเดียวของนาฬิการุน่นี้ก็มีวงแหวนที่ผลิตจากเซรามิกสีดำที่ทนทานต่อการขีดข่วน แล้วยังมีซุปเปอร์ลูมิโนวาสีเบจตามตำแหน่งสเกลดำน้ำบนวงแหวนนี้ด้วย ส่วนคริสตอลทรงโดมที่ดูโค้งนูนราวกับเป็นอะคริลิคคริสตอลเหมือนในนาฬิกาวินเทจนั้นที่จริงแล้วเป็นแซฟไฟร์คริสตอลตามแบบฉบับของนาฬิกาสมัยใหม่ทุกประการ และภายในตัวเรือนกันน้ำ 300 เมตรนั้นก็เป็นเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 1154.P2 ซึ่งมีทั้งซิลิคอนบาลานซ์สปริงและเอสเคปเมนท์ที่ผลิตจากอัลลอยสูตรพิเศษจึงมีประสิทธิภาพในการทนทานต่ออิทธิพลของสนามแม่เหล็กเป็นพิเศษแม้ว่าฝาหลังจะเป็นแบบแซฟไฟร์คริสตอลก็ตาม รายละเอียดอื่นที่น่าสนใจของเครื่องนาฬิการุ่นนี้ ได้แก่ แบเรลคู่ที่ทำให้เครื่องมีกำลังลานสำรองยาวนานถึง 100 ชั่วโมง และโรเตอร์ทอง 18 กะรัตที่แกะสลักโลโก้ Blancpain Fifty Fathoms ด้วยฟอนท์วินเทจเหมือนบนหน้าปัด
สายนาฬิกาของ Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Act 3 เป็นสายสไตล์นาโต้สีทูโทนที่ผลิตด้วยวัสดุรีไซเคิลจากอวนจับปลาที่เก็บกู้มาจากทะเล กล่องนาฬิกาออกแบบและผลิตเป็นพิเศษให้ดูเหมือนเฮาส์ซิ่งสำหรับกล้องเพื่อการใช้งานใต้น้ำในสมัยก่อน โดยการถ่ายภาพใต้น้ำนั้นก็เป็นกิจกรรมที่เกิดขึ้นในช่วงเดียวกันกับที่เริ่มมีการดำน้ำเพื่อการสันทนาการ และเป็นกิจกรรมที่มีส่วนทำให้เกิดความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับโลกใต้น้ำอย่างแพร่หลายมากขึ้น ซึ่งในภายหลังนั้นโครงการ Blancpain Ocean Commitment เองก็ยังมีการใช้ภาพถ่ายใต้น้ำเป็นหนึ่งในเครื่องมือสำคัญในการสร้างความตระหนักให้ประชากรในประเทศต่างๆ ทั่วโลกสนใจเรื่องการสำรวจโลกใต้น้ำและการปกป้องทรัพยากรทางทะเลมาเป็นเวลานานถึง 20 ปีพอดีในปีนี้

The Swiss watchmaker gave the 70th anniversary of the legendary dive watch a very good thought, balancing elements from the past and the present with a touch of the future.

Blancpain has launched three limited edition Fifty Fathoms watches this year. Beginning with the online prelude of the contemporarily-executed Fifty Fathoms Act 1 watch in early January, the Swiss watchmaker followed up with the coordinated global launch of the totally unexpected, forward-looking Fifty Fathoms Act 2 watch in February before concluding with the grand reveal of the homage-paying Fifty Fathoms Act 3 watch in Cannes just now. We dedicate this article to the memorable journey that kept the watch collecting world on edge for a good nine months
Why Cannes? The answer is simple but not short … not at all. Followers of Blancpain would have read that the Fifty Fathoms was created in 1953 because Jean-Jacques Fiechter, the CEO of the brand from 1950 to 1980, was a serious diving enthusiast. Those who studied the collection’s history a bit further would have discovered also that Fiechter dove somewhere in the south of France, and that he was inspired to develop the Fifty Fathoms after experiencing a near-fatal incident here in 1952 when he ran out of air. He was determined to contribute to the growing diving communities a tool everyone could use to reliably keep track of passage of time while they perused the underwater world.
So, for the grand reveal of the last celebratory watch of the Fifty Fathoms 70th anniversary, Blancpain chose to host the exclusive event on the Saint-Marguerite Island off the coast of Cannes and Antibes where Fiechter had his diving club memberships, and home to the Le Tombant du Vengeur wreck site where the very need for the Fifty Fathoms arose.
Fifty Fathoms was named crucially after the depth rating of the very first dive watch created by Fiechter. Fathoms were a measurement unit once in use in the past. One fathom equals 1.8 meters so 50 fathoms translated to 91 meters. Of course, more modern generations of the timepiece came with greater water resistance but the original, poetic name was romantically and suitably preserved.
Three acts of celebration were planned for this 70th anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms. Act 1 is a stainless steel dive watch in the form of contemporary Fifty Fathoms as we have known it for the past 20 years, but in a 42 mm size (whereas regular production Fifty Fathoms at this time of writing is 45 mm) and with the new design indexes that are essentially three dimensional blocks of luminescent materials. Meanwhile, Act 2 is a titanium dive watch in a new case architecture that will become established as the new Tech line for the future of technical diving where one goes deeper and longer for a professional reason — it is the first non-chronograph dive watch to be able to time a session of up to three hours.
That left Act 3 with the duty of paying homage to historical Fifty Fathoms watches. Limited to a run of 555 pieces, the Fifty Fathoms Act 3 watch is what one can refer to as a modern re-issue of a certain military specification watch model that Blancpain produced for the US Navy in 1957, with the most distinguished design feature being the circular moisture indicator above the six o’clock position.
Its 41.3 case follows the shape of the 1957 MIL-SPEC model, down to the elongated lugs. The material used to produce the case is Bronze Gold – a proprietary 9K gold alloy of Swatch Group that combines 37.5% gold with 50% copper in order to qualify it as bronze. It is important to note that the deliberate use of Bronze Gold is not meant to make the watch more precious, but rather to emulate the appearance of certain few Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC timepieces that were made of maillechort (a specific term used to describe a non-precious metal alloy with a slight golden hue, also referred to as German silver). Blancpain could have use 18K red gold for this Act 3 watch but then the hue would have been too much for a timepiece that is labelled as a military tool.
On the black matte dial, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms names are printed in white, using the exact same fonts as those appearing on the dial of the original MIL-SPEC model. Beige Super-LumiNova is used for all hour markers and hands to give the watch the faux patina it needs to look the (vintage) part. The moisture indicator above the six o’clock position continues the practical tradition whereby combat divers could be ensured that the watch being handed to them was not damaged during a previous mission by another diver. This indicator would turn red when in contact with moisture, alerting the operator to the fact that the watch has been compromised.
The Fifty Fathoms Act 3 makes use of modern advancements while keeping its retro styling. For example, the unidirectional rotating bezel features an insert that is made of scratch-resistant black ceramic, complete with beige Super-LumiNova for the diving scales. Its domed crystal may look as voluptuous as those acrylic ones used in vintage watches but it is in fact made of sapphire per today’s standard. Beating inside the 300-meter water resistant case is the self-winding Caliber 1154.P2 with a silicon balance spring and an escapement in exclusive alloys for enhanced anti-magnetism properties despite the use of a sapphire crystal caseback, and a twin barrel design for a longer power reserve of 100 hours. Its rotor, made in 18K gold for greater winding efficiency, also has engraving of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms logos in vintage fonts.
This third watch of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 70th anniversary celebration is worn on a two-tone NATO strap made from recovered finishing nets. As a nice closing touch, Blancpain has created a special box for this timepiece in the same fashion as vintage underwater camera housing that was crucial to the particular genre of photography that developed around the same time as recreational diving, and contributed to the promotion of relevant sciences around the world. In a way, it is a subtle nod to the Blancpain Ocean Commitment program which has contributed to the exploration and the preservation of marine world for the past 20 years, in one way by means of underwater photography.
Originally created for recreational diving use, adopted by the military circles and once again embraced by well-informed and discerning civilians, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watch in all forms occupy a very special place in the hierarchy of watch collecting. We believe in the potentials of this serious dive watch, and we do hope to see the continued and organized growth of the collection in the decade leading to the next landmark anniversary.
