ถ้าคุณรู้จักผมมานานเกิน 10 ปี คุณจะรู้ว่าสมัยก่อนผมเขียนรีวิวนาฬิกาเยอะกว่านี้มาก และนาฬิกาที่รีวิวนั้นก็เป็นนาฬิกาที่ตัวเองซื้อเองใส่เองทุกเรือน พอมาทำหน้าที่เป็นนักข่าว แม้จะได้เจอนาฬิกามากแบรนด์มากรุ่นกว่าแต่ก็เป็นการเจอแบบจับๆ หมุนๆ เล่นๆ ถ่ายรูปนิดหน่อย ไม่กี่นาทีก็คืนเขาไปแล้ว ถ้าแบรนด์ใดมีนาฬิกาให้ยืมใส่เป็นสัปดาห์ค่อยคิดเขียนเป็นรีวิวจริงจังเพราะว่าเรามีประสบการณ์และความคิดเห็นมากพอจะเขียนอะไรเป็นเรื่องเป็นราวแล้ว
ดังนั้นเมื่อตอนที่ Bell & Ross BR 03-93 GMT เปิดตัวเมื่อปีที่แล้ว ผมก็มีภาพในใจล่วงหน้าเลยว่าเรือนนี้นะ เดี๋ยวจะซื้อแล้วใส่สักปีหนึ่งค่อยมาเขียนรีวิว เพราะว่ารีวิวแบบหนึ่งสัปดาห์หรือหนึ่งเดือนเขามีกันเยอะแล้ว แต่ด้วยภาระงานที่มากมายไม่ขาดสายและความขี้เกียจที่แฝงตัวอยู่ลึกๆ อยู่ในดีเอ็นเอ จากปีหนึ่งก็กลายเป็นปีครึ่งโดยไม่ตั้งใจ พอเขียนเสร็จแล้วดันไม่มีเวลาว่างเลือกรูปอีกจนเลทไปอีก 2 เดือนจนกระทั่งได้มาโพสท์ในที่สุดในวันนี้
Bell & Ross BR 03-93 GMT เป็นนาฬิกาที่ออกมาในจังหวะซิทคอมมากสำหรับผม ผมจำได้เลยว่าเมื่อเดือนมกราคม ค.ศ. 2021 ผมเขียนบทความหนึ่งเพื่อตัดพ้อว่าสถานการณ์โควิดทำให้ผมหมดความอยากได้นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีต่างๆ เพราะถึงได้มาก็เดินทางไปต่างประเทศไม่ได้ เขียนเสร็จเพียงแค่ 2 เดือน Bell & Ross ก็พรีเซนท์นาฬิการุ่นนี้ให้ผมได้ดูทางวีดีโอคอลเลย เล่นเอาจิตใจว้าวุ่นโดยไม่ทันตั้งตัว และถึงแม้ว่าจะพบข้อจำกัดสำคัญประการหนึ่งจากการที่อ่านสเปคโดยละเอียดแล้วก็ยังตัดสินใจช่างมัน ยอมแพ้ความหล่อ โทรไปหาดีลเลอร์เพื่อสั่งหนึ่งเรือนทันที และรอเพียงถึงแค่เดือนเมษายนเท่านั้นก็มีของล็อทแรกเข้ามาแล้ว
บทความนี้เขียนหลังจากที่ผมมี Bell & Ross เรือนนี้อยู่ในการครอบครองนาน 18 เดือนและได้ใส่เดินทางไปต่างประเทศ 4 ครั้งรวมประมาณ 35 วัน ช่วงเดือนมีนาคมถึงเดือนสิงหาคม ค.ศ. 2022 ในแง่การออกแบบ Bell & Ross นำตัวเรือนทรง BR 03 ไปดัดแปลงเป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีได้อย่างลงตัว นาฬิการุ่นนี้มีขนาด 42 มม. (เล็กกว่าตัวเรือนทรง BR 01 ที่มีขนาด 46 มม.) เข็มจีเอ็มทีปลายลูกศรสีแดงชี้ไปยังสเกล 24 ชั่วโมงบนวงแหวนขอบตัวเรือนสีแดงและดำซึ่งผลิตจากอลูมิเนียมเพื่อบอกเวลาในประเทศที่สอง บางคนอาจติว่าทำไมขอบไม่เป็นเซรามิก แต่ถ้าถามผม ผมว่าเป็นแบบนี้ก็ดูลุยๆ ดีแล้วและก็ช่วยเราประหยัดเงินด้วยเพราะถ้าเขาทำเป็นเซรามิกก็จะมาคิดค่านาฬิกากับเราแพงกว่านี้
Bell & Ross BR 03-93 GMT มาพร้อมกับสายหนังและสายผ้าอย่างละเส้น แต่ผมใส่เฉพาะสายหนังอย่างเดียวมาโดยตลอดจึงยังไม่มีคอมเมนท์ใดๆ เกี่ยวกับสายผ้าทั้งสิ้น ไม่สามารถบอกได้ว่าใส่แล้วสบายดีหรือว่าแข็งหรือคมเกินไป สำหรับสายหนังนั้นมีความกว้างและความหนากำลังดี เหมาะกับขนาดและมิติของตัวเรือน ใส่แล้วนาฬิกากระชับอยู่บนข้อมือ ไม่ทำให้รู้สึกว่าหนักหรือมีอาการเหวี่ยง ผมใส่นาฬิการุ่นนี้กับเสื้อผ้าลำลองและเสื้อผ้าทำงานตลอดโดยไม่รู้สึกเคอะเขิน เอาจริงๆ ก็ใส่กับชุดสูทแบบเป็นทางการมาแล้วหลายครั้งด้วย เพราะว่ามีนาฬิกาเรือนเดียวที่ใส่ติดข้อมือตลอดทั้งทริป ไม่อยากพกนาฬิกาเดรสไปให้ต้องเป็นภาระดูแลเพียงเพื่อใส่จริงไม่กี่ชั่วโมง
เครื่อง Sellita ที่ใช้ในนาฬิการุ่นนี้ก็เป็นเครื่องที่มีความทนทานและเที่ยงตรงเพียงพอต่อการใช้งานจริง อย่างเรือนของผมนี่เดินเร็วเฉลี่ยวันละแค่ 3 วินาทีเท่านั้น ผมจึงไม่เคยต้องกังวลอะไรเลย แต่ว่าเครื่องรุ่นนี้มีข้อด้อยอยู่ประการหนึ่งซึ่งน่าจะเป็นสิ่งที่ผู้พัฒนาคิดไม่ถึงหรือคิดไม่ละเอียดพอตั้งแต่ยุค ETA แล้ว ข้อด้อยที่ว่าก็คือเขาออกแบบให้เข็มจีเอ็มทีเป็นแบบควิกเซ็ทแต่ว่าเข็มชั่วโมงของโลคอลไทม์กลับควิกเซ็ทไม่ได้ซึ่งวิธีการแบบนี้จะทำให้ผู้ใช้นาฬิกาไม่ได้รับความสะดวกเวลาเดินทางจริง
หากผมใส่นาฬิกาเรือนนี้อยู่กรุงเทพก็จะไม่มีปัญหาอะไรทั้งสิ้น ผมก็แค่ตั้งเข็มโลคอลไทม์เป็นเวลาไทยและตั้งเข็มจีเอ็มทีเป็นเวลาสวิสแล้วก็ใส่นาฬิกาบนข้อมือเลย ปัญหามันจะมาตอนที่ผมจะเดินทางเพราะเมื่อไปถึงประเทศที่หมายแล้วผมจะไม่สามารถตั้งเข็มชั่วโมงของโลคอลไทม์ให้ตรงกับเวลาท้องถิ่นได้โดยไม่หยุดเข็มทุกเข็ม วิธีการแก้ปัญหาของผมก็คือผมต้องตั้งเข็มจีเอ็มทีเป็นเวลาไทยและตั้งเข็มโลคอลไทม์เป็นเวลาปลายทางเลยตั้งแต่ยังไม่ออกจากบ้านไปสุวรรณภูมิ ถามว่าแบบนี้โอเคไหม สะดวกไหม ก็ไม่หรอก แต่มันก็ไม่ได้มีทางแก้หลายทางนัก ผมเห็นเรื่องนี้เป็นปัญหาตั้งแต่ก่อนตัดสินใจซื้อนาฬิการุ่นนี้แล้ว และก็เกือบจะไม่ซื้อเพราะข้อจำกัดเรื่องที่ไม่สามารถควิกเซ็ทเข็มชั่วโมงของโลคอลไทม์นี้ด้วย แต่สุดท้ายก็ให้อภัยในความหล่อ เอามาก่อน แล้วเดี๋ยวค่อยว่ากัน
หากใครต้องการนาฬิกาที่ดูมีคาแรคเตอร์หรือต้องการสร้างสีสันให้กับคอลเลคชั่นของตนเอง ผมเชื่อว่า Bell & Ross BR 03-93 GMT รุ่นนี้สามารถตอบโจทย์ของคุณได้ เพราะว่าใส่สนุก ดูดี ราคาได้ แถมยังมีหน้าปัดกับเข็มที่ใหญ่โตชัดเจนอีกต่างหาก แต่ถ้าจะใส่เดินทางต่างประเทศเป็นประจำผมว่าไม่เวิร์ค ยิ่งถ้าต้องไปหลายประเทศในทริปเดียวกันหรือว่ามีต้องไปเปลี่ยนเครื่องที่ตะวันออกกลางหรือยุโรปหรือที่ไหนก็ตามยิ่งไม่เวิร์คหนักเลย ไปซื้อนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีที่ตั้งเข็มโลคอลไทม์แบบควิกเซ็ทได้ดีกว่า เราไม่มีความจำเป็นต้องตั้งเข็มจีเอ็มทีแบบควิกเซ็ทอยู่แล้วเวลาที่เราเดินทางจริง

I like everything about this watch, except for how the local hour hand is not quickset.

If you have known me long enough, you would notice that I have done more watch reviews when I was a regular customer than when I became a journalist. There is only one reason for that: I believe that actual owners have more to say about the watch on their wrist.
Journalists get to play with more watches all right but they typically spend a limited period of time with a timepiece before handling it back to the brand. On occasions, they get a loan watch to really wear for a week and this is where the written words become much more meaningful because they are writing from actual experience as a user. It evolves from an article of how a watch is built to how it wears in real life.
So when I bought the Bell & Ross BR 03-93 GMT when it came out last year, I had this pre-determination to write a long-term owner review of it. The time period I set for myself was one year, if anything, to beat the one-week and one-month style of reviewing out there. However, due to other work and obligations, plus a bit of procrastination on my side, this one-year review became a one-and-half-years review by default. And then it takes two months just to move from the stage of writing to that of posting.
The Bell & Ross BR 03-93 GMT is a story of fate for me. It was introduced in March 2021 at the height of covid lockdowns in many countries, only two months after I wrote an article saying that the pandemic had killed my appetite for GMT watches. I read the specs, asked the questions with the brand rep who presented it to me, discovered a serious shortcoming, and then decided to buy the watch still because it was just too cool to pass. One month later, the first batch of the BR 03-93 GMT watches were delivered to Bangkok and I followed through with the purchase without hesitation.
Having owned it for 18 months and worn it during four overseas trips of about 35 days collectively between March and August 2022, I can write about it with confidence. In terms of design, Bell & Ross has made good use of its BR 03 case design. It measures 42 mm, a slightly smaller cousin of the original BR 01 case at 46 mm. A GMT hand with a red tip points to the 24-hour scale on the bezel to indicate time in a second zone. Note that the black-red bezel insert is aluminium, not ceramic. I do not mind this one bit because aluminium looks more “toolish”, if there is such an adjective, and it makes it possible for Bell & Ross to keep the price of the watch down by a bit.
The watch is delivered with a leather strap and a canvas strap. I have been wearing exclusively the leather one. The width and the thickness of this strap ensures a snug and comfortable fit on the wrist at all times, despite the relatively large size of the case. I have worn this combination with casual and semi-formal attires and it does not look out of place. I have gone as far as to wear it with a full business suit on a few occasions because it was the only watch I had with me on the trip, but I will not try to pull it with a tuxedo or anything really dressy. I have not tried the canvas strap so I cannot comment on its comfort or quality at this time.
The Sellita movement used is robust and satisfactorily accurate. My example is only 3 seconds fast per day and I never had to worry about it at all. But it was born with a built-in handicap — probably a byproduct of shortsightedness on the part of the original developers back at ETA. The GMT hour hand can be quickset, but not the local hour hand. This is so illogical and impractical for frequent travelers.
When I am not traveling, this is not an issue at all. I would just set the local hour hand to Thai time and the GMT hand to Swiss time and go about my day. Things begin to become inconvenient when actually embarking on a trip, because I would not be able to set the local hour hand to local time on the fly. My workaround solution to this shortcoming when traveling is to set the GMT hour hand to Thai time and the local hour hand to the time of the country I am going to already before leaving home for the airport. It is a compromise I foresaw when buying the watch. It was almost a dealbreaker for me, so I am sharing with you know outright so you can make an informed decision on this product.
I would recommend the Bell & Ross BR 03-93 GMT to anyone looking to add character to their watch collection. This is a fun and highly legible watch to wear, and it does get noticed by watch collectors and laymen alike. It is sensibly priced as well. I do not recommend it for serious globetrotting though, especially if you will find yourself in different time zones during the same trip. The lack of ability to quickset the local hour hand remains a pain here even after multiple trips. There are other GMT watches with a more suitable functionality than this.
