กี่ครั้งแล้วไม่รู้เวลาที่เราเจอคนรักนาฬิกาแล้วนั่งคุยกันไม่นานหัวข้อก็เปลี่ยนเป็นเรื่องราคานาฬิกาที่ถีบตัวสูงแบบหยุดไม่อยู่ในปัจจุบันนี้ บทความนี้ไม่ใช่บทความที่จะมาหาเหตุผลอะไรกับกลไกของตลาด แต่ผมอยากแนะนำให้คุณได้รู้จักกับแบรนด์นาฬิกาชื่อ Baltic จากประเทศฝรั่งเศสที่สามารถมอบความลงตัวระหว่างงานออกแบบงานผลิต มีหน้าตาเป็นตัวของตัวเองไม่ได้ก๊อปใครมา และที่สำคัญคือมีราคาค่าตัวที่คุ้มค่าด้วย
ผมเคยเขียนเรื่อง Baltic มาครั้งหนึ่งแล้วโดยที่ไม่ได้เปิดเผยว่าตนเองก็มีอยู่เรือนหนึ่ง แต่หลังจากที่ผมได้รับนาฬิกา Baltic เรือนที่สองของผมเมื่อสองเดือนก่อน ผมก็ตัดสินใจเขียนบทความนี้เพื่อเป็นประโยชน์กับคนรักนาฬิกาท่านอื่นๆ ที่อาจจะได้รู้จักแบรนด์นี้แล้วแต่ยังไม่แน่ใจว่าจะซื้อดีหรือไม่ เพราะต้องสั่งผ่านเว็บให้เขาส่งมาให้จากฝรั่งเศส และเพราะว่าไม่มีโอกาสได้จับเรือนจริงก่อนตัดสินใจซื้อ
Baltic เริ่มต้นขึ้นในรูปแบบของโครงการระดุมทุนแนวคราวฟันดิ้งเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2017 แต่ตัวผมเองนั้นมารู้จักในปีต่อมา คุณเอเตียน มาเลค ผู้ก่อตั้งแบรนด์เปิดเผยว่าชื่อแบรนด์ Baltic นั้นตั้งเพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่คุณพ่อของเขาซึ่งมีต้นตระกูลอยู่ทางตอนเหนือของโปแลนด์บริเวณที่ติดกับทะเลบอลติค อันที่จริงแล้วต้องบอกเลยด้วยว่าทุกสิ่งที่เกี่ยวกับแบรนด์นี้จะมีส่วนเกี่ยวพันกับเรื่องคุณพ่อท่านนี้ เพราะว่าหลังจากที่ท่านเสียไป คุณเอเตียนก็ได้รับมรดกเป็นนาฬิกาต่างๆ ที่คุณพ่อสะสมไว้ พร้อมด้วยสมุดบันทึกที่มีรายละเอียดพร้อมภาพถ่ายของนาฬิกาแต่ละเรือนในกรุของคุณพ่อ ด้วยความที่คุณพ่อก็เป็นช่างภาพด้วยนั่นเอง สมุดบันทึกเล่มนี้เองที่นำพาให้คุณเอเตียนมาทำแบรนด์ Baltic ในวันนี้ แล้วยังเป็นต้นตำรับสำหรับการออกแบบนาฬิการุ่นหลักๆ ของแบรนด์นี้ด้วย
เราสามารถเรียกว่า Baltic เป็นแบรนด์สัญชาติฝรั่งเศสได้อย่างเต็มปาก เพราะว่ามีสำนักงานใหญ่ตั้งอยู่ที่ปารีสและมีโรงงานประกอบนาฬิกาตั้งอยู่ที่เบซองซง และตัวบริษัทเองก็ไม่ปิดบังเลยด้วยว่าชิ้นส่วนที่ใช้ในนาฬิกา Baltic เกือบทั้งหมดมาจากแหล่งต่างๆ ที่ไม่ใช่สวิส ส่วนมากจะเป็นฮ่องกง ในขณะที่สายนาฬิกาแบบโลหะผลิตในฝรั่งเศสเอง และมีองค์ประกอบอื่นๆ บางประเภทที่มาจากอิตาลี เครื่องนาฬิกาที่ใช้ส่วนมากเป็นเครื่องญี่ปุ่น แต่นาฬิกาบางรุ่นที่ใช้เครื่องสวิสหรือเครื่องจีนก็มี
Baltic ขายนาฬิกาให้กับลูกค้าโดยตรงผ่านทางเว็บไซท์จึงสามารถตัดเอาส่วนกำไรของตัวแทนออกไปได้และทำให้นาฬิกาของตนมีราคาที่สามารถแข่งขันกับแบรนด์อื่นได้เป็นอย่างดี ในภายหลังคนเล่นนาฬิกาจำนวนมากได้รู้จักกับ Baltic ผ่านทางสองเหตุการ์สำคัญในปี ค.ศ. 2021 เหตุการณ์ที่หนึ่งก็คือการเปิดตัวนาฬิการุ่น MR01 ซึ่งเป็นนาฬิกาสไตล์เดรสขนาด 36 มม. หน้าปัดลายเกรนมีหลักชั่วโมงตัวเลขทรงเบรเกต์ และขับเคลื่อนด้วยเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบไมโครโรเตอร์สัญชาติจีน และเหตุการณ์ที่สองก็คือการที่ Baltic ส่งนาฬิกาโครโนกราฟแบบสองวงดีไซน์พิเศษเรือนหนึ่งเข้าร่วมในงานประมูลเพื่อการกุศล Only Watch 2021 ซึ่งโดยปกติแล้วมักจะมีแต่นาฬิการะดับไฮเอ็นด์เป็นหลัก ทำให้คนที่คร่ำหวอดอยู่ในวงการนาฬิกาจำนวนมากได้เริ่มสังเกตเห็นแบรนด์นี้ในที่สุด
คอลเลคชั่นต่างๆ ของ Baltic เติบโตทีละน้อยหลังจากช่วงโควิด และทุกครั้งที่เปิดตัวอะไรก็จะมีภาพประกอบสวยๆ มายั่วยวนใจ เหมือนตอนที่ออกนาฬิกาดำน้ำ Aquascaphe Titanium ขนาด 41 มม. เครื่อง Miyota เมื่อเดือนกรกฎาคม ค.ศ. 2022 และเป็นนาฬิกา Baltic เรือนแรกที่ผมซื้อ เมื่อรวมอากรนำเข้า 5% และภาษีมูลค่าเพิ่ม 7% แล้วเรือนนั้นผมจ่ายไป 29,068 บาทถ้วน (อัตราแลกเปลี่ยนในเวลานั้นไม่แย่เท่าตอนนี้ และผมไม่ต้องจ่ายค่าส่งนาฬิกาทาง DHL) ถือว่าคุ้มมากๆ เมื่อพิจารณาถึงสเปคที่ให้มาแบบไม่มีกั๊ก ทั้งตัวเรือนไทเทเนียมกันน้ำได้ 300 เมตร แซฟไฟร์คริสตอล วงแหวนขอบตัวเรือนเซรามิก และยังเคลือบสารเรืองแสงซุปเปอร์ลูมิโนว่าบนตัวเลขของสเกลขอบตัวเรือนด้วยอีก ไม่ใช่เรืองแสงเฉพาะเข็มและหลักชั่วโมง
สำหรับ Baltic ที่ผมได้มาเป็นเรือนที่สองนั้นคือรุ่น Bicompax 002 Gold PVD Black ซึ่งออกเมื่อปลายปีที่แล้วแต่ผมเพิ่งตัดสินใจซื้อเมื่อเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ สาเหตุที่ลังเลอยู่พักหนึ่งก็เพราะว่าตัวเรือนมีขนาด 38 มม. ซึ่งเล็กเกินกว่าความชอบของผม แต่สุดท้ายก็บอกตัวเองว่ามัน 565 ยูโร อย่าคิดอะไรเยอะ ดีไซน์ก็ลงตัว ถูกใจทุกจุดถ้าไม่นับเรื่องขนาดที่ว่าเล็กเกินไป ซื้อมาแล้วถ้าใส่ไม่ไหวจริงๆ ก็น่าจะพอขายใครสักคนได้ เมื่อบอกตัวเองอย่างนั้นเสร็จก็กดสั่งไปแล้วอีกประมาณ 5 วันของก็ส่งถึงบ้าน Bicompax 002 รุ่นนี้จึงกลายเป็นนาฬิกาพีวีดีทองเรือนแรกของผม และนาฬิกาเครื่องจีนเรือนแรกของผมด้วยครับ ถามว่าใส่แล้วเล็กไหม ก็เล็กไปสำหรับความชอบของผมจริงๆ แต่มันก็เป็นขนาดที่ถูกต้องสำหรับสไตล์และยุคที่มาของมันแล้ว
เวลาเปิดเว็บ Baltic แล้วผมรู้สึกตื่นเต้นอย่างบอกไม่ถูก มันคือความตื่นเต้นว่าเราสามารถซื้อนาฬิกาหน้าตาอย่างที่เราชอบได้โดยไม่ต้องใช้เงินมากมาย นี่เป็นความรู้สึกที่ขาดหายไปจากชีวิตการสะสมนาฬิกาของผมมาพักหนึ่งแล้ว แต่ที่สำคัญกว่าเรื่องราคาก็ย่อมเป็นเรื่องของสไตล์ที่ตรงกับจริตของผม ผมถูกใจนาฬิกาส่วนมากที่ Baltic ผลิตออกมาแล้วในเวลานี้ และผมจะยังคงสนับสนุนแบรนด์นี้หากเขายังคงเดินบนเส้นทางนี้ต่อไป ไม่หันไปทำนาฬิกาแนวโฮเมจจนมากเกินงามครับ

More often than not, when I meet other watch lovers, especially the ones who have been around for many years, the conversation quickly turns to how watch prices have skyrocketed in recent years. This article will not try to explain market dynamics. Rather, it will bring to your attention a watch brand that delivers a good blend of design and substance, a commendable measure of originality, and finally, excellent value for money. I am talking about Baltic from France which offers suave, no-nonsense, vintage-inspired watches at remarkably affordable prices
I wrote about Baltic once without revealing that I own one of their watches. Having taken delivery of my second Baltic purchase two months ago, I decide that it is time I give the brand some recognition, for the benefit of any reader who may be sitting on the fence due to credibility concerns or lack of access to an actual product.
Baltic started as a successful crowdfunding project in 2017 but it did not appear on my radar until the following year. Founder Etienne Malec publicly revealed that the brand name Baltic is an homage to his father who had origins in the north of Poland, along the Baltic Sea. This is very important because everything leads back to him. After he passed, Malec the son inherited his watches and a journal he kept as a watch collector and a photographer, documenting the watches he owned during his lifetime. That journal set Malec the son on the path to where Baltic is today, as well as served as the design playbook for some of the brand’s core collections.
With headquarters in Paris and an assembly workshop in Besançon, Baltic is very transparent in declaring that components that go into their watches have mostly non-Swiss origins. The majority of parts are from Hong Kong; the bracelets are French; and some other accessories hail from Italy. Movements are mainly Japanese, but certain watch models are powered by a Swiss or a Chinese calibre.
The company retails directly through their website, allowing them to cut the typical margin and to price their watches most competitively. They became known on a wider scale among the watch communities in 2021 for two important moves. One was the launch of the Baltic MR01: a 36 mm dress watch with applied Breguet numerals on a grained dial, powered by a decently finished Chinese micro rotor movement. The other important move included their submission of a specially (and very nicely) designed bicompax chronograph watch to the 2021 edition of Only Watch. The move definitely put the brand on the radar of watch connoisseurs because the watches entering that charity auction program are usually on the more expensive side of the price spectrum.
Their collections expanded at a steady pace after the pandemic, with each new product accompanied by appealing marketing visuals. The same was true for the 41 mm Aquascaphe Titanium released in July 2022, which became my first Baltic purchase. With the currency exchange at the time and free shipping by DHL, I ended up paying 29,068 baht, after the 5% import duty and 7% VAT, for a Miyota-powered titanium dive watch with a 300 metres rating, a sapphire crystal, a brushed ceramic bezel insert, and Super-Luminova on the bezel markings in addition to the hands and indexes. That was quite a deal indeed.
My second Baltic is the Bicompax 002 Gold PVD Black. This model was introduced late last year, but I was on the fence for a few months because of its 38 mm size which is smaller than my preference. In the end, I told myself EUR 565 is an unbeatable price, and that I should just get it first and sell it to someone later if the watch turns out to be too, too small. Five days later, the watch arrived at my doorstep, and it became my first PVD gold watch and my first watch with a Chinese movement. Is it small? Absolutely, yes, it is too small for my liking, but it is correct size for the style and the period in which the design was originated.
Browsing through their website gave me the kind of thrill that had been missing from my watch collecting life for quite some time. I felt empowered, for the lack of a better word, because buying a nice watch does not have to break the bank anymore. But more important than accessible pricing, their period styling very much resonates with me. I like what Baltic has done so far, and I will keep admiring them if they stay on this track and not try to go too far down the “homage watch” route.
