Omega serves up a slice of the moon in this worthy anniversary timepiece.

The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition is notable on two levels. Firstly, this is the timepiece developed by Omega for the big anniversary occasion of the first moon landing 50 years ago. Secondly, it proffers innovations in terms of material used to produce the case and the bracelet, and in terms of the movement which is historical and pioneering at the same time.
This first tribute watch is a modern reproduction of the BA145.022 model, originally created in 1969 to celebrate the successful mission. That watch with hand-winding Calibre 861 was notable for its use of yellow gold case and bracelet, as well as a burgundy bezel.
Relying heavily on that 1969 aesthetics, the 2019 Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition dazzles in Moonshine gold – a proprietary gold alloy of Omega that is in paler hue than typical yellow gold but promises higher resistance to fading in the long run. Similarly upgraded is the burgundy bezel which is now in ceramic with the tachymeter scale in Ceragold. On the solid gold dial, the hour markers are made from black onyx and all hands are either filled or coated with black varnish. The Omega logo is thankfully in the period-correct vintage style – a small but important consideration for the purists.
The movement developed by Omega for this watch is a brand new, Master Chronometer-certified hand-winding Calibre 3861. It was developed on the basis of the Calibres 186X, with the addition of co-axial escapement, silicon balance spring and Moonshine gold-plated main plate and bridges. This mechanical beauty can be appreciated through the sapphire crystal caseback. The commemorative decoration ring features a small slice of the lunar meteorite on the opposite side from the globe whose cartographic illustration depicts Cape Canaveral where NASA has their launch centre.
The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition is delivered in a grey ceramic crater box with 3D printing of the lunar surface. An image of the Sea of Tranquillity and the landing position of Apollo 11 can be found on its top panel. Production of this watch is limited to 1,014 pieces – the same quantity as the original BA145.022.
