ทำความรู้จักกับ Bulgari Octo รุ่นใหม่ที่ตีความคอมพลิเคชั่นระดับคลาสสิกได้อย่างลงตัว

World of Watches Thailand มีโอกาสได้สัมภาษณ์ผู้บริหารของ Bulgari เมื่อเดือนมกราคมในช่วงของการจัดงาน LVMH Watch Week ในรูปแบบดิจิตอล ในเวลานั้นเราถามว่าทำไมคอลเลคชั่น Octo จึงไม่มีคอมพลิเคชั่นแนวปฏิทินบ้าง และแนวทางของไลน์ย่อยอื่นๆ ในคอลเลคชั่น Octo ที่ไม่ใช่ Finissimo จะเป็นอย่างไร ที่ถามไปเช่นนั้นเพราะไม่ทราบจริงๆ ว่าเราจะได้เห็นคำตอบของทุกสิ่งในงาน Watches and Wonders Geneva เดือนเมษายนและ Geneva Watch Days ในเดือนสิงหาคม
Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar บนปกนิตยสารของเราฉบับนี้คือเรือนเวลาเจ้าของตำแหน่งนาฬิกาเพอร์เพทชวลคาเลนดาร์ที่บางที่สุดในโลก และถือเป็นการทำสถิติโลกครั้งที่ 7 ของ Bulgari Octo Finissimo นับตั้งแต่ที่เริ่มทำผลงานเพื่อสร้างชื่อเสียงในด้านนี้มาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2014

นาฬิกาอีกรุ่นหนึ่งที่น่าทึ่งไม่แพ้กันก็คือ Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic ซึ่ง Bulgari เปิดตัวเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2019 ในฐานะนาฬิกาโครโนกราฟจักรกลที่บางที่สุดในโลก และยังคว้ารางวัล Chronograph Watch Prize จากรายการ Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève ในปีนั้นได้อีกด้วย เครื่องออโต้รุ่น BVL 318 ของนาฬิการุ่นนี้มีกลไกโครโนกราฟที่ควบคุมด้วยชุดคอลัมน์วีล และมีการออกแบบโรเตอร์ให้เป็นแบบเพอริเฟอรอลอยู่รอบนอกตัวเครื่องจึงทำให้เครื่องนาฬิกาบางเพียง 3.30 มม. ในขณะที่สามารถมอบกำลังลานสำรองได้ถึง 55 ชั่วโมง

สำหรับปี ค.ศ. 2021 นี้ Bulgari เลือกผลิตนาฬิกา Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT ใน 2 รูปแบบใหม่ ได้แก่รุ่น 103371 ซึ่งใช้ตัวเรือนไทเทเนียมพื้นผิวพ่นทรายเหมือนกับรุ่นแรกเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2019 แต่เปลี่ยนหน้าปัดเป็นแบบสีดำโอปอลีนและเปลี่ยนสายจากไทเทเนียมเป็นยางสีดำเพื่อให้ได้อีกลุคหนึ่งที่แตกต่างจากลุคเปิดตัวเป็นอย่างมาก
รุ่นที่สองในรหัส 103467 มีชื่อเต็มว่า Octo Finissimo S Chronograph GMT และจัดว่าเป็นสมาชิกน้องใหม่ของครอบครัว Octo Finissimo S ที่เพิ่มความสปอร์ตและทนทานด้วยเม็ดมะยมแบบขันเกลียวเพื่อการกันน้ำถึงระดับ 100 เมตร (จากเดิมที่กันน้ำ 30 เมตร) ตัวเรือนสเตนเลสสตีลนี้มีขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นเล็กน้อยเป็น 43 มม. เวิลด์ไทม์อาจจะไม่ใช่คอมพลิเคชั่นที่คนนิยมเท่าโครโนกราฟหรือยกย่องเท่าเพอร์เพทชวลคาเลนดาร์ แต่เวิลด์ไทม์ก็เป็นคอมพลิเคชั่นระดับคลาสสิกของวงการนาฬิกาที่ควรค่าแก่การครอบครอง เพราะสามารถบอกเวลาในไทม์โซนต่างๆ ได้พร้อมกันทั้งโลกเพียงดูตัวเลขบนวงแหวน 24 ชั่วโมงเทียบกับวงแหวนชื่อเมืองที่อยู่รอบนอก และเครื่องนาฬิกาออโต้รุ่น BVL 257 ใน Octo Roma WorldTimer ก็ได้รับการออกแบบมาให้คุณสามารถปรับตั้งวงแหวนทั้งสองได้อย่างง่ายดายด้วยเม็ดมะยม

Octo Roma WorldTimer รุ่นนี้มีขนาดตัวเรือน 41 มม. และมีให้เลือกใน 2 รูปโฉมด้วยกัน ได้แก่ รุ่นรหัส 103481 เป็นตัวเรือนสเตนเลสสตีล หน้าปัดสีน้ำเงินลวดลายซันเบิสท์และสายสเตนเลสสตีล และรุ่นรหัส 103481 ในสไตล์ดำล้วนด้วยการเคลือบดีแอลซีสีดำบนตัวเรือนสเตนเลสสตีล หน้าปัดของนาฬิกามีพื้นผิวแบบพ่นทรายและเป็นสีดำด้าน สวมใส่ด้วยสายยางสีดำ ทั้งสองรุ่นมีเม็ดมะยมแบบขันเกลียวเพื่อการกันน้ำถึงระดับความลึก 100 เมตรจึงพร้อมที่จะเป็นเรือนเวลาคู่ใจไปทั่วโลกกับคุณเมื่อถึงวันที่เราสามารถเดินทางได้อีกครั้งหนึ่ง

When we spoke with Bulgari back in January during the 2021 digital version of LVMH Watch Week, we asked a few questions about the lack of a calendar complication in the Octo range, as well as how they will expand the Octo lines other than Finissimo. Little did we know that the brand had groundbreaking pieces ready to be gradually unveiled at Watches and Wonders Geneva and Geneva Watch Days in April and August, respectively.
Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar graces the cover of this World of Watches Thailand quarterly print issue. The current holder of the slimmest perpetual calendar watch title, this seventh world record timepiece continues Bulgari’s saga of contemporary haute horlogerie, which started in 2014.
The perpetual calendar marks a logical next step after the manufacture successfully integrated the tourbillon, minute repeater and chronograph functions into this ultra-thin range of watches. The mechanical programming of a perpetual calendar is such that it will correctly display the date regardless of the number of days in a month, and whether or not there are 28 or 29 days in February of that year. Theoretically speaking, if the watch is kept running continuously, it will require only one manual calendar adjustment at the end of February 2100 when the leap year is technically skipped by the Gregorian calendar system.
Bulgari has achieved an aesthetic and technical masterpiece with the Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar. In terms of display, the calendar indications are legible and intuitive. The upper half of the dial is dedicated to an arch of the dates with a single retrograde hand that snaps back to the starting position upon the completion of each month. On the lower half of the dial, two counter-balancing subdials provide information on the day of the week and month of the year. A small retrograde hand at the six o’clock position keeps track of the leap year cycle.
On the technical side, the self-winding Calibre BVL 305 with 408 parts is merely 2.75 mm thick, in part due to the use of a micro rotor that generates a power reserve of up to 60 hours as the watch is worn on the wrist. This enables the overall watch case to be as thin as 5.80 mm, keeping with the highly regarded slimness of the Octo Finissimo range, and the ensuing world record achievement.
The Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar is offered simultaneously in two materials: the sandblasted titanium version with a matching dial and bracelet (Ref. 103200); and the brushed/polished platinum version with a blue lacquered dial and alligator leather strap (Ref. 103463).
Equally remarkable, the Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic represents a 2019 Bulgari novelty that claimed the title of the thinnest mechanical chronograph; it went on to win the Chronograph Watch Prize of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève program that year. This column wheel-controlled chronograph is powered by the self-winding Calibre BVL 318. With clever engineering and a peripheral rotor design, the movement comes in at only 3.30 mm thin while maintaining a power reserve of 55 hours.
The two chronograph buttons above and below the crown are designed in such a way that they become a natural continuation of the case’s angularity. On top of that, Bulgari managed to include, in a most subtle way, a second time zone indication by way of the 24-hour counter at the three o’clock position. This GMT hand can be adjusted independently in one-hour increments by pushing the button on the nine o’clock side of the case, which also echoes the overall case architecture.
For 2021, Bulgari has offered two new aesthetic variations of the timepiece. Originally produced in sandblasted titanium with a matching dial and bracelet, one new version features the same titanium case but with a black opaline dial and black textured rubber strap (Ref. 103371) for a totally different look from the premiere version.
The second is Octo Finissimo S Chronograph GMT (Ref. 103467), a new member of the Octo Finissimo S subrange of watches with enhanced robustness. Compared with the titanium version, this stainless steel piece is marginally larger at 43 mm (as opposed to 42 mm) and thicker at 8.75 mm (as opposed to 6.90 mm), but it offers significantly more water resistance at 100 metres (as opposed to 30 metres) with the use of a screw-down crown. The boldness is further projected by the applied markers and contrasting silver counters on the blue sunray dial. The time display is also luminous on this particular version of the chronograph watch.
And at the same time this September issue goes to print, Bulgari has unveiled the Octo Roma WorldTimer watch, appropriately answering our other January query about expansion of the Octo lines other than Finissimo.
While not as popular as the chronograph or as revered as the perpetual calendar, the world time serves as another watchmaking complication that is as classical as it is useful. With one glance of the dial, the wearer can quickly tell the time in all 24 zones of the world by referencing the 24-hour scale against the cities on the perimeter. In this case, the 24-hour ring and city ring are mechanically manipulated by the crown of the self-winding Calibre BVL 257.
The city choices of the maker in some world time watches offer an opportunity for geopolitical or whimsical musing as well. This is true for the Octo Roma WorldTimer where Bulgari’s travel spirit is deeply ingrained. For example, while Bermuda may be the typical city of choice to represent the Caribbean time zone, Bulgari’s choice is to go with Saint Barthélemy, which is considered by many as a luxurious tourist destination. Some of the other designated cities are those where Bulgari currently operates a hotel or has one in the development pipeline.
The Octo Roma WorldTimer measures 41 mm in diameter. The watch can be had in two very different interpretations at the moment. First, there is the stainless steel version with a blue sunburst dial and stainless steel bracelet (Ref. 103481). Secondly, there is the black DLC-coated stainless steel variety with a matte black, sandblasted dial and black textured rubbered strap. Both models feature a screw-down crown and optimal water resistance of 100 metres, so they are quite ready to roam the world with you as soon as international travel resumes.
From the above, there is ample evidence to reassure watch collectors of the current century that Bulgari is a watch brand on a blazing path to contemporary stardom – one with tenacity, an unwavering approach and the financial might to see things to fruition.
