Audemars Piguet Marks 150th Anniversary with Celebratory Perpetual Calendar Watches

ช่างนาฬิกา ฌูลส์ หลุยส์ โอเดอมาส์ และเอ็ดเวิร์ด ออกุสต์ ปิเกต์แห่งเมืองเลอบราซูส์ ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์เริ่มประกอบกิจการด้วยกันตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1875 โดยในช่วงเริ่มแรกนั้นเน้นเรื่องการประดิษฐ์เครื่องนาฬิกาแบบคอมพลิเคชั่นเพื่อขายให้แบรนด์นาฬิกาอื่นๆ นำไปใช้ จนกระทั่งมีการผลิตนาฬิกาแบบสมบูรณ์ทั้งเรือนในปี ค.ศ. 1880 และเริ่มจดบันทึกประวัตินาฬิกาที่ผลิตและขายไปทุกเรือนอย่างเป็นทางการตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1882 ทั้งหมดนี้ทำให้เรามองย้อนกลับไปแล้วเห็นได้ว่า Audemars Piguet เป็นบริษัทที่มีความเชี่ยวชาญเรื่องกลไกที่มีความซับซ้อน เพราะในบรรดานาฬิกาจำนวน 1,600 เรือนที่ผลิตในช่วงปี ค.ศ. 1882-1892 นั้นกว่า 80% จะมีคอมพลิเคชั่นชนิดใดชนิดหนึ่ง เช่น โครโนกราฟ รีพีทเตอร์หรือปฏิทินต่างๆ

ส่วน Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “150^th Anniversary” Openworked รุ่นใหม่นี้แม้จะมีหน้าปัดสไตล์คลาสสิกแต่ในเรื่องของวัสดุนั้นฉีกล้ำไปในอนาคตด้วยการใช้ไทเทเนียมเป็นวัสดุหลัก ประกอบด้วยวัสดุบัลค์เมทอลลิกกลาสหรือบีเอ็มจีสูตรที่มีพัลลาเดียมเป็นส่วนผสมหลัก เมื่อมองจากภายนอกเราจะเห็นการตกแต่งพื้นผิวที่แตกต่างกันอย่างชัดเจน กล่าวคือ ตัวเรือนและข้อสายที่เป็นไทเทเนียมนั้นจะมีการขัดผิวแบบซาติน ส่วนขอบตัวเรือนและหมุดของข้อสายที่เป็นบีเอ็มจีนั้นจะมีการขัดผิวแบบเงา เมื่อพลิกมาทางด้านหลังจะเห็นฝาหลังแบบเปิดที่มีการแกะสลักข้อความ “1 of 150 pieces” อยู่รอบนอก ภายในมองเห็นเครื่องนาฬิกากลไกเพอร์เพทชวลคาเลนดาร์แบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 5135 ที่ AP ใช้อย่างต่อเนื่องมาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2015 และจะยุติเอาไว้ให้ทุกคนได้จดจำด้วยนาฬิการุ่นนี้

เมื่อทิ้งทวนด้วยนาฬิกาที่ใช้เครื่องรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 5135 รุ่นสุดท้ายนี้แล้ว Audemars Piguet ก็เปิดตัวเครื่องนาฬิกาเพอร์เพทชวลคาเลนดาร์รุ่นใหม่ในรหัสคาลิเบอร์ 7138 ทันที จุดขายหลักของเครื่องเจเนอเรชั่นใหม่นี้อยู่ที่การตั้งค่าทุกอย่างผ่านเม็ดมะยม โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องใช้อุปกรณ์ช่วยจิ้มปุ่มยุบด้านข้างตัวเรือนอีกต่อไป AP เรียกเม็ดมะยมนี้ว่าเม็ดมะยมแบบ “ออลอินวัน” ซึ่งประกอบด้วย 3 ตำแหน่งด้วยกัน เมื่อเม็ดมะยมอยู่ในตำแหน่งที่ 1 (ชิดตัวเรือน) เราจะสามารถขึ้นลานนาฬิกาได้ เมื่อดึงออกมาอยู่ในตำแหน่งที่ 2 (ตำแหน่งกลาง) แล้วหมุนขึ้นจะเป็นการตั้งวันที่แต่หากหมุนลงจะเป็นการตั้งเดือนและรอบปีอธิกสุรทิน แล้วเมื่อดึงออกมาอยู่ในตำแหน่งที่ 3 (ตำแหน่งนอกสุด) จะเป็นการตั้งเข็มบอกเวลาได้ในทั้ง 2 ทิศทาง สุดท้ายเมื่อกดเม็ดมะยมให้กลับเข้ามาอยู่ในตำแหน่งที่ 2 (ตำแหน่งกลาง) อีกครั้ง การทำงานของเม็ดมะยมจะเปลี่ยนไปจากเดิม โดยในครั้งนี้เมื่อคุณหมุนเม็ดมะยมขึ้นจะเป็นการตั้งค่าวันและสัปดาห์ หรือเมื่อคุณหมุนเม็ดมะยมลงก็จะเป็นการตั้งค่ามูนเฟส เป็นอันว่าครบจบทั้งปฏิทิน

เวลามองจากภายนอก เราจะรู้ได้ทันทีว่านาฬิกา AP รุ่นใดใช้เครื่องเพอร์เพทชวลคาเลนดาร์ใหม่ด้วยการดูว่าเข็มวันที่อยู่ที่ใด เพราะในเครื่องรุ่นเดิมที่เพิ่งเลิกใช้ไปนั้นเข็มวันที่จะอยู่ที่ตำแหน่ง 3 นาฬิกา ส่วนเข็มเดือนกับเข็มรอบปีอธิกสุรทินจะอยู่ที่ตำแหน่ง 12 นาฬิกา ส่วนในเครื่องรุ่นใหม่นั้นตำแหน่งของเข็มทั้ง 2 ชุดนี้จะสลับกัน และเมื่อเพ่งต่อไปอีกนิดจะเห็นด้วยว่าในรุ่นใหม่นั้นตัวเลขสัปดาห์จะเริ่มต้นที่เลข 1 ตัวเลขวันที่จะเริ่มต้นที่เลข 1 และวันจะเริ่มต้นที่ Monday ในขณะที่ของเดิมนั้นตัวเลขสัปดาห์ที่อยู่ตรงกลางด้านบนสุดจะเป็นเลข 52 ตัวเลขวันที่ที่อยู่ตรงกลางด้านบนสุดจะเป็นเลข 31 และวันแรกของสัปดาห์จะเป็น Sunday ทั้งหมดนี้เป็นเรื่องของความสวยงามและความเป็นระเบียบมากกว่า ไม่ได้มีผลต่อการทำงานแต่อย่างใด ส่วนที่จะมีผลในการใช้งานจริงนั้นคือเรื่องกำลังลานสำรองของเครื่องรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 7138 ใหม่ซึ่งเรามีความยินดีจะเรียนให้ท่านทราบว่าเพิ่มขึ้นเป็น 55 ชั่วโมงแล้ว เมื่อเทียบกับรุ่นเดิมที่มีเพียง 40 ชั่วโมงเท่านั้น

ในช่วงเริ่มแรก เครื่องรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 7138 ใหม่จะถูกใช้ในนาฬิกา 3 ดีไซน์หลักด้วยกัน ได้แก่ Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar รุ่นตัวเรือนและสายสเตนเลสสตีลที่มาพร้อมกับหน้าปัดกร็องตาปิสเซอรีสีน้ำเงิน Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar รุ่นตัวเรือนและสายแซนด์โกลด์ที่มาพร้อมกับหน้าปัดกร็องตาปิสเซอรีสีแซนด์โกลด์ และ Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar รุ่นตัวเรือนไวท์โกลด์ที่มาพร้อมกับหน้าปัดลวดลายเฉพาะตัวของคอลเลคชั่นในสีฟ้ารมดำ ทั้งหมดนี้เป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ในไลน์ปกติ ไม่ใช่ลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่นจึงจะมีขายต่อไปในระยะยาว และทั้ง 3 รุ่นนี้มีขนาด 41 มม. จึงเหมาะกับข้อมือของคนส่วนมาก จะแตกต่างก็ด้วยบุคลิกที่เกิดจากสีและวัสดุที่คุณสามารถเลือกได้ตามความชอบของตนเอง

The manufacture bids farewell to Calibre 5135 while presenting its replacement with an all-in-one crown setting.

Watchmakers Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet of Le Brassus, Switzerland, began their partnership in 1875. In the early years, their focus was on crafting complicated watch movements for other brands. It was not until 1880 that they began producing complete watches, and in 1882, they started officially recording the details of every watch they produced and sold. These records allow to see how Audemars Piguet has long been a master of complex mechanisms. Of the 1,600 watches they produced between 1882 and 1892, more than 80% featured at least one complication, such as a chronograph, repeater or calendar.

In 1955, the company introduced the world’s first perpetual calendar wristwatch with a leap-year indicator, with only nine pieces produced between 1955 and 1957. This was followed in 1978 by the launch of the world’s thinnest self-winding perpetual calendar, an exceptional feat given that the quartz crisis had discouraged many brands from investing in mechanical watchmaking. As such, Audemars Piguet can be considered as having played a key role in reigniting interest in classical horology in the period that followed.

Given this heritage, it is fitting that the perpetual calendar complication serves as the centrepiece of Audemars Piguet’s 150^th anniversary celebrations. The highlight of the which is the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “150^th Anniversary” Openworked. This limited edition of 150 pieces takes inspiration from pocket watch Reference 25729 from 1992. Currently on display at the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet, it features a skeletonized, perpetual calendar movement inside a platinum case shaped similarly to the Royal Oak.

While the new Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “150^th Anniversary” Openworked retains a classical dial design, its materials are distinctly forward-thinking. The case and bracelet are primarily crafted from titanium, with bezel and bracelet studs made of a particular formular of bulk metallic glass (BMG) where palladium is used as a key composition. The contrast in finishing is striking with satin brushing for titanium parts and mirror polishing for BMG ones. On the back, an engraving that reads “1 of 150 pieces” can be found on the rim of the display caseback which reveals the self-winding Calibre 5135 which had been in use at AP since 2015 and being sent off with this limited edition watch.

As the curtain is drawn on the old calibre, the manufacture introduces its replacement immediately: Calibre 7138. The defining feature of this next-generation movement is its all-in-one crown, which eliminates the need for the corrector tool when setting the calendar. This crown has three positions. In position one (flushed against the case), it winds the watch. In position two (middle position), turning upwards sets the date, while turning downwards adjusts the month and leap year cycle. In position three (fully extended), the time can be set in either direction. Notably, when the crown is returned to position two, its function changes in that turning it upwards sets the day and week number, while turning it downwards adjusts the moon phase. And your calendar is now set!

One visual cue distinguishing watches powered by the outgoing and incoming movements is the placement of the calendar hands. In the outgoing Calibre 5135, the date hand was positioned at three o’clock, while the month and leap year hands were at twelve o’clock. In the new Calibre 7138, these positions are reversed. Additionally, the week number now starts at 1, the date begins at 1, and the week commences on Monday, whereas in the previous movement, the week number at the top centre was 52, the date at the top position was 31, and the week began on Sunday. While these changes are aesthetic rather than functional, the new movement does offer a tangible improvement: an increased power reserve of 55 hours, compared to 40 hours in the previous calibre.

Initially, Calibre 7138 will be featured in three main models: the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar in stainless steel with a blue Grande Tapisserie dial, the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar in sand gold with a matching sand gold-coloured Grande Tapisserie dial, and, the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar in white gold with a distinctive embossed dial in smoked. These are regular production models so they will continue to be available long-term. All three measure 41 mm in diameter, making them well-suited to most wrists, with their distinct aesthetics defined by their materials and colours.

For those seeking an extra touch of exclusivity to remember the 150^th anniversary by, in addition to the openworked model in the beginning part of this article, Audemars Piguet is also releasing a special run of this initial Calibre 7138 trio in the limitation of 150 pieces each. They differ from the regular production models with a cursive script logo at six o’clock instead of block letters, complete with the “1 of 150 pieces” engraving on the caseback.

Although Audemars Piguet has unveiled a few other novelties for the first semester of the year, we are saving them for later. For now, we let you indulge in these perpetual calendar marvels, if you are not already carried away midway through the reading.
