Luxuo Thailand gives a recap of the works by four lady laureates and young laureates

Established in 1976, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise recognises individuals across the globe who contribute to the betterment of this world with respect to the environment, exploration, science, technology and culture. It is not restricted to either gentlemen or ladies, but on the occasion of the International Women’s Day today (8 March), we take the opportunity to highlight the works of four female laureates and young laureates from the latest edition of the program in 2016.
Kerstin Forsberg is a Peruvian biologist who campaigns for giant manta rays. As the fragile creature is on the brink of extinction, Forsberg encouraged fishermen, communities, schools and local government to change their stance and view the mantas as attractors of ecotourists and generators of alternative income, rather than to catch them for meat and gills. With Rolex Awards for Enterprise, she was enabled to bring more fishermen on board and implement locally-driven ecological monitoring program.
Another biologist recognised by Rolex Awards for Enterprise is Vreni Häussermann. Her main focus is the exploration of the fjords of Chilean Patagonia to determine the effects of salmon farming and other human activities on underwater life. For example, in 2015, there was a massive die-off of whales, sardines and jellyfish and the cause of which was not clear. Before Rolex Awards for Enterprise, Vreni could go down to the depth of only 30 metres with her scuba gear. With the support given, she was equipped with a remote controlled vehicle capable of taking photographs from as deep as 500 metres.
Young Christine Keung relocated to the United States of America at the age of four. After being the first of the family to obtain a university degree, she visited Shaanxi in the northwest of China where her father was born, only to discover that the natural beauty was being destroyed by medical waste dumping and pesticides. She then devoted herself to the education and empowering of women in 60 communities in the resolution of pollution in the water and the soil. Her program encompasses recycling of agricultural waste, reduction of medical waste and training for the villagers to know how to measure contaminants in water and soil.
Meanwhile, a young Tunisian-French lady Sarah Toumi is spearheading the effort against drought and desertification of her paternal hometown – about three-fourths of Tunisia’s agricultural land is being affected by reduced rainfall and changing climates. Her Acacias for All proposes to revitalise the lands by plantation of acacia trees, with the rationale being that their deep roots will help bring nitrogen and water up to the surface, thereby replenishing the soil. The program also recommends farmers to plant other crops which are more suitable to the new climate than the traditional choices of almond and olive.

Rolex Awards for Enterprise คือโครงการของ Rolex ที่ถือกำเนิดขึ้นตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1976 เพื่อเป็นการสนับสนุนบุคคลที่ทำประโยชน์ให้กับสังคมโลกในด้านต่างๆ อาทิ สิ่งแวดล้อม การสำรวจธรรมชาติ วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยีและวัฒนธรรม รางวัลนี้ไม่ได้มีการจำกัดเรื่องเพศว่าจะต้องมอบให้กับผู้ชายหรือผู้หญิง แต่เราขอเลือกกล่าวถึงเฉพาะผู้หญิงที่ได้รับรางวัลครั้งล่าสุดในปี ค.ศ. 2016 ก่อนเพื่อให้ตรงกับธีมวันสตรีสากลซึ่งก็คือวันนี้ วันที่ 8 มีนาคม
เคิร์สติน ฟอร์สเบิร์กเป็นนักชีววิทยาชาวเปรูที่สร้างความตระหนักและรณรงค์ให้ชาวประมง ชุมชน โรงเรียนและรัฐบาลท้องถิ่นหันมาร่วมกันปกป้องปลากระเบนแมนตายักษ์ ซึ่งตกอยู่ในภาวะที่เปราะบางและเสี่ยงต่อการสูญพันธุ์เป็นอย่างมาก โดยเธอสามารถเปลี่ยนทัศนคติของชุมชนและชาวประมงให้มองว่าปลากระเบนราหูนี้เป็นสิ่งล้ำค่าและสร้างรายได้ให้กับชุมชนโดยการดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวจำนวนมากให้มาเยือนจนเกิดเป็นการท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ แทนที่จะจับไปขายเพื่อเอาเนื้อและเหงือกของปลากระเบนไปเป็นอาหาร รางวัลที่เธอได้นั้นช่วยให้เธอนำชาวประมงเข้าโครงการได้มากขึ้นและดำเนินการเฝ้าสังเกตทางด้านนิเวศวิทยาในท้องถิ่นได้อย่างดียิ่งขึ้น

คริสติน คึงเป็นสาวชาวจีนที่ไปเติบโตในสหรัฐอเมริกาตั้งแต่อายุเพียงสี่ปี เมื่อจบการศึกษาจากรั้วมหาวิทยาลัยเป็นคนแรกของครอบครัว เธอเห็นความสวยงามของมลฑลชานซีซึ่งเป็นบ้านเกิดของพ่อทางตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนต้องถูกทำลายจากการกลายเป็นแหล่งทิ้งขยะทางการแพทย์และยาฆ่าแมลง ความตั้งใจของเธอนั้นคือการเข้าไปให้ความรู้และส่งเสริมให้ผู้หญิงใน 60 ชุมชนมีบทบาทในการแก้ปัญหามลภาวะทางน้ำและดิน ไม่ว่าจะด้วยการนำขยะจากการเกษตรกลับมารีไซเคิล จัดตั้งโครงการลดของเสียจากกระบวนการต่างๆ ของภาคการแพทย์ และฝึกอบรมให้ชาวบ้านมีความรู้ในการวัดค่าการปนเปื้อนในดินและน้ำ
ซาร่า ทูมิ หญิงสาวเชื้อสายทูนิเซีย-ฝรั่งเศสเป็นหัวเรี่ยวหัวแรงในการต่อสู้กับความแห้งแล้งที่แทบจะกลายเป็นทะเลทรายของทูนิเซียซึ่งเป็นดินแดนบ้านเกิดของพ่อเธอ ปริมาณฝนที่น้อยลงและสภาพอากาศที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปมีผลทำให้พื้นที่ทางการเกษตรสามในสี่ของทูนิเซียแห้งแล้งรุนแรง โครงการ Acacias for All จึงเกิดขึ้นเพื่อรณรงค์ให้มีการปลูกต้นอาคาเซียซึ่งมีรากหยั่งลึกลงไปใต้ดิน สามารถนำไนโตรเจนและน้ำขึ้นมาฟื้นฟูสภาพผิวดินได้ และยังแนะนำให้เกษตรกรปลูกพืชที่เหมาะกับสภาพอากาศที่เปลี่ยนไปด้วย ไม่ใช่ปลูกเพียงอัลมอนด์และมะกอกเหมือนแต่เดิม
