การที่คนส่วนมากนึกถึง Lange 1 ก่อนนาฬิการุ่นอื่นเมื่อพูดถึงชื่อแบรนด์ A. Lange & Söhne นั้นไม่ใช่เรื่องแปลก เพราะว่า Lange 1 มีดีไซน์การจัดวางองค์ประกอบต่างๆ บนหน้าปัดที่ไม่เหมือนใคร และเป็นนาฬิกาหนึ่งในสี่รุ่นแรกที่ทางแบรนด์เปิดตัวในเดือนตุลาคม ค.ศ. 1994 เมื่อกลับมาดำเนินกิจการอีกครั้งหนึ่งหลังจากการรวมประเทศของเยอรมนี และในเวลานั้น A. Lange & Söhne ก็เริ่มวางแผนออกแบบและพัฒนาเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบโครโนกราฟยุคสมัยใหม่รุ่นแรกของตนเองซึ่งเป็นการตอบโจทย์ความต้องการของผู้ซื้อนาฬิกาที่ชื่นชอบฟังก์ชั่นโครโนกราฟที่ใช้จับเวลาเป็นพิเศษ
นาฬิกาโครโนกราฟรุ่นแรกของ A. Lange & Söhne ก็มีนาฬิกาโครโนกราฟรุ่นถัดไปในชื่อว่า 1815 Chronograph ในปี ค.ศ. 2004 เพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่งานผลิตนาฬิกาโครโนกราฟในอดีตของเฟอร์ดินานด์ เอดอล์ฟ ลังเงอซึ่งสามารถสืบย้อนกลับไปได้จนถึงปี ค.ศ. 1868 โดยที่ 1815 Chronograph ขนาด 39.5 มม. นี้ก็เป็นนาฬิกาโครโนกราฟกลไกคอลัมน์วีลที่มีฟังก์ชั่นฟลายแบ็คและจับเวลาได้นาน 30 นาทีเหมือนกับ Datograph แต่ว่าความแตกต่างที่เด่นชัดที่สุดก็คือการที่นาฬิการุ่นนี้ไม่มีหน้าต่างวันที่ขนาดใหญ่ที่ตำแหน่ง 12 นาฬิกา ทำให้ 1815 Chronograph ดูเหมือนกับนาฬิกาพกในยุคสมัยของผู้ก่อตั้งแบรนด์มากกว่า และเมื่อสังเกตใกล้ๆ ก็จะเห็นว่าสเกลที่อยู่รอบนอกหน้าปัดนั้นไม่ได้เป็นแทคคิมิเตอร์ หากแต่เป็นพัลโซมิเตอร์ที่สามารถใช้วัดอัตราการเต้นของหัวใจได้ เครื่องของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ได้รับการปรับปรุงอีกครั้งหนึ่งในปี ค.ศ. 2010 ให้มีกำลังลานสำรองนานขึ้นเป็น 60 ชั่วโมง และในปี ค.ศ. 2018 ก็มีการเผยโฉมนาฬิกา 1815 Chronograph ตัวเรือนพิงค์โกลด์ใหม่อีกสองเวอร์ชั่นซึ่งมาพร้อมกับหน้าปัดสีดำและสีเงินให้เลือก
และด้วยคำขวัญ Never Stand Still เราจึงเห็นการพัฒนาอย่างไม่หยุดยั้งของ A. สำหรับนักสะสมนาฬิกาที่ต้องการฟังก์ชั่นรัตตราปองต์โดยที่ไม่จำเป็นต้องมีฟังก์ชั่นเพอร์เพทชวลคาเลนดาร์ A. We revisit some of the German manufactory’s recent forays into the specialized field of time measurement.

The Lange 1 is the face by which many people remember A. Lange & Söhne by. That is rightly so because of its unique layout, and its being among the first four watches presented by the modern A. Lange & Söhne company in October 1994. But already at the time, the manufactory was working hard at designing and executing its first contemporary chronograph caliber which paved the way for them to become established as a purveyor of the industry’s most interactive complication.
The resulting timepiece was the Datograph in 1999. It features the classic, hand-winding column wheel chronograph capable of measuring an event lasting up to 30 minutes with a jumping minute counter for precise reading. Its flyback function allows the chronograph to be swiftly reset and restarted with one push of a button. The 43.2 mm Datograph was made forever distinctive with the incorporation of the outsize date feature at the 12 o’clock position, hence, the “dato” part of its name. Today, this milestone timepiece remains in production within the Saxonia collection, but referred to as the Datograph Up/Down as it has since been enhanced with a small but purposeful power reserve indicator at the 6 o’clock position, while also reducing the case size to 41 mm.
Five years after the Datograph, A. Lange & Söhne presented the 1815 Chronograph in 2004 as a tribute to Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s heritage of chronographs which began in 1868. Similar to the Datograph, this is a column-wheel-operated, flyback chronograph that measures an event lasting up to 30 minutes. The absence of the outsize date gives the 1815 Chronograph more resemblance to pocket watches from the time of the brand’s founder. A closer look around the peripheral of the dial will also reveal that the scale provided is not a tachymeter but a pulsometer for the measurement of heart rate. Its movement was updated in 2010 to extend the power reserve to 60 hours, and two new pink gold versions of this 39.5 mm watch were presented in 2018 with either a black or an argenté dial.
But true to the brand’s “Never Stand Still” motto, A. Lange & Söhne did not stop there. It astounded the watch collecting world in 2013 with the 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar. Measuring 41.9 mm in diameter and 14.7 mm in thickness, the watch is moderately sized and highly wearable, considering the fact that it combines two of the industry’s most coveted complications. On one hand, we have the rattrapante or the split-seconds chronograph whose extra second hand makes it possible to mark finishing time of, for example, a second runner or car. Meanwhile, the perpetual calendar displays all pertinent information with four hands in the two subdials at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions, plus the moon phase indicator at the 6 o’clock position that will be accurate for 122.6 years if the watch is kept running continuously. Shown here is the latest 2023 version of the 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar in white gold with a pink gold dial, limited to 100 pieces only.
Watch collectors who wish to own only the rattrapante chronograph without the perpetual calendar were given their chance in 2020. To commemorate the 175th anniversary of Saxon precision watchmaking, A. Lange & Söhne has launched the 1815 Rattrapante watch (without the perpetual calendar complication) in a 41.2 mm case size. The first limited edition in honey gold was limited to only 100 pieces. It was followed only two years later by a 200-unit version in platinum two years later. The 1815 Rattrapante is quickly identifiable by the vertical positioning of the two subdials with the 30-minute counter and the subsidiary second dial at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions, respectively.
Lastly, in 2023, A. Lange & Söhne presented the world with the Odysseus Chronograph. It is not only the most complicated timepiece in the nascent collection of luxury sports watches, but also the brand’s first self-winding chronograph watch! Still, it is only with trained eyes that anyone can tell that it is a chronograph. This is because the 42.5 mm watch in stainless steel is without prominent buttons on the side of the case or a typical subdial or counter on the dial. Chronograph pushers are given a deceptive design that is harmonious with the case and the crown which they flank. Elapsed time of up to 60 minutes are marked by the two central chronograph hands: the red one for the second and the rhodium one for the minute. Fastest and most accurate reading is thus ensured, as far as mechanical chronographs are concerned.
And that was our quick recap of what A. Lange & Söhne has achieved so far where the chronograph complication is concerned. Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 is just around the corner.
