หากแปลความหมายแบบตรงตัว คำว่าโอตกูตูร์

ทำไมงานแสดงแฟชั่นโอตกูตูร์จึงต้องจัดแยกออกมาเป็นแฟชั่นวีคของตนเอง
เนื่องจากแฟชั่นเสื้อผ้าชั้นสูงมีความอลังการที่แตกต่างออกไปจากแฟชั่นประเภทอื่น แถมยังต้องอาศัยคนทำงานที่มีฝีมือและสู้งานหนัก
จึงต้องมีการจัดแสดงแฟชั่นประเภทนี้แยกจากการจัดแสดงแฟชั่นเสื้อผ้าสำเร็จรูป อาจเป็นเรื่องง่ายที่บางคนจะตัดสินว่าเสื้อผ้าโอตกูตูร์เป็นสิ่งสร้างที่เว่อร์วัง ในขณะที่บางคนมองว่าแฟชั่นโอตกูตูร์เป็นจุดสูงสุดของแฟชั่นที่เหนือระดับ

ทำไมต้องเป็นปารีส
งานแสดงแฟชั่นบางรายการมักจะจัดในพื้นที่เดิมมาโดยตลอด อย่างเช่น
งานแฟชั่นโชว์ชุดเจ้าสาวมักจัดที่นิวยอร์ก ในขณะที่งานแสดงแฟชั่นโอตกูตูร์จะใช้ปารีสเป็นพื้นที่ประจำในการจัดงาน สมาพันธ์ Chambre
Syndicale de la Haute Couture ได้ออกกฎไว้ว่า

Couture เริ่มปรากฏตัวขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 1868 เพื่อดำเนินการประสานงานและให้การสนับสนุนแก่สมาชิก
แบรนด์โอตกูตูร์ที่ควรรู้จัก
ปัจจุบันสมาพันธ์ Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture มีสมาชิกทั้งหมด 16 ราย ซึ่งผ่านการอนุมัติโดยสมาพันธ์ฯ หลายแบรนด์อาจจะเป็นที่รู้จักเพราะมีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังมายาวนานในวงการแฟชั่น และภายหลังได้ก้าวเข้ามาในวงการแฟชั่นโอตกูตูร์ด้วย ในขณะเดียวกันบางแบรนด์ก็เริ่มต้นจากการเป็นห้องเสื้อโอตกูตูร์ก่อน แล้วจึงขยายกิจการออกไปจนกลายเป็นแบรนด์แฟชั่นระดับโลกที่ครอบคลุมหลากหลายมิติของสินค้าแฟชั่น แบรนด์ดังกล่าว ได้แก่ Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Giambattista Valli และ Maison Margiela
ส่วนสมาชิกสมาพันธ์ฯ อย่าง Alexis Mabille, Julien Fournie และ Maurizio Galante นั้นเป็นห้องเสื้อที่ตัดเย็บเฉพาะเสื้อผ้าชั้นสูงเท่านั้น นอกจากรายชื่อสมาชิกที่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอยู่เสมอแล้ว ยังมีรายชื่อสมาชิก Correspondent Member ซึ่งเป็นห้องเสื้อในประเทศอื่น และสมาชิก Guest Member ที่ได้รับเชิญจากสมาพันธ์ฯ ทั้งนี้สมาชิกแต่ละรายต่างก็เป็นแบรนด์ที่เราคุ้นหูคุ้นตากันมานาน อาทิ Azzedine Alaia, Elie Saab, Fendi Couture, Giorgio Armani Prive, Valentino, Versace, Georges Hobeika, Ralph & Russo, Zuhair Murad และ Guo Pei ดีไซเนอร์ชาวจีนที่โด่งดังจากชุดราตรีสุดอลังการ ซึ่งสื่อพากันตั้งชื่อให้ว่า “ชุดไข่เจียว” (Omelette Gown) ที่นักร้องสาวริฮานนาสวมใส่ไปในงาน Met Gala 2015

What exactly is haute couture?
The literal meaning of haute couture is high dressmaking. This type of high-end fashion is usually all made by hand and constructed for a specific client, using only the highest quality of fabrics and employing extreme techniques and attention to detail. Because of its time-consuming nature and extravagantly wondrous designs, exorbitant prices usually come with each creation—thus naturally limiting haute couture to the likes of princesses and the extremely wealthy. Considered as the artisanal and fine art side of fashion, haute couture has no place in the commercial world and is sometimes used for display instead of practical wear.
Sometimes brands may loosely use the term to describe their high-fashion, custom-fitted clothing that is produced in fashion capitals of the world, however, in France, the term ‘haute couture’ is protected by law. To be able to use this particular designation, brands must meet a rigorous set of qualifications set by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, a governing body that oversees this highest discipline in fashion. In order to have a right to call itself a couture house and to use the word ‘haute couture’ in its promotion materials, members of Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture must design made-to-order pieces for private clients; have a workshop in Paris that employs at least 15 members full-time; have at least 20 full-time technical people in at least one workshop and present a collection of at least 50 original designs every fashion season in January and July.
Why do haute couture shows have their own separate fashion week?
Due to its differing extraordinary nature, workmanship and arduous labor that goes into creating haute couture, it does not get shown alongside ready-to-wear brands. It may be easy to dismiss haute couture as an over-the-top spectacle, but as the pinnacle at the top of the fashion totem pole, one of the main functions of haute couture is to inspire and serve as trend-setters. As it is haute couture that experiments with unusual fabrics and techniques, these new ideas and designs usually trickle down to fashion houses along the chain. Haute couture fashion shows usually take place twice a year in Paris in January and July.
Why Paris?
Certain types of shows have always been site specific—bridal shows have always been shown in New York, while haute couture has always had stomping grounds in Paris. The federation has made it a rule that Paris is the only place that the haute couture shows take place and fittingly so, as Paris is home to the origins of haute couture. Charles Frederick Worth founded what was considered the first true couture house in Paris in 1858, while the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture emerged in 1868 to offer coordination and support among its members.
Haute couture brands to know
There are currently 16 members of haute couture approved by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Many of these names you will recognize as fashion’s biggest names, for they have also gotten onto the haute couture train, while some have started out as couture houses, before becoming a multi-dimensional, global fashion house. This includes Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Giambattista Valli and Maison Margiela.
Other members, such as Alexis Mabille, Julien Fournie, and Maurizio Galante solely produce haute couture. On this ever-shuffling list of members are also correspondent members and guest members which include long-time familiar names like Azzedine Alaia, Elie Saab, Fendi Couture, Giorgio Armani Prive, Valentino, Versace, Georges Hobeika, Ralph & Russo, Zuhair Murad and Guo Pei—best known for the “omelette gown” Rihanna wore to the Met Gala in 2015.
