เออร์เนสต์ เฮมิงเวย์เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 21 กรกฎาคม ปี 1899 หนึ่งปีก่อนโลกจะย่างเข้าสู่ศตวรรษที่ 20 วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีให้ความมั่นใจคนทั้งโลกว่าอนาคตต้องดีกว่า กฎเกณฑ์ทางศีลธรรม รวมทั้งคุณธรรมอย่างผู้กล้าหรือสุภาพบุรุษยังไม่เคยถูกสั่นคลอน จนกระทั่ง…เกิดสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่ง สงครามซึ่งคร่าชีวิตทั้งทหารและพลเรือนกว่า 16 ล้านคนกลายเป็นเวทีแห่งการพิสูจน์ตนเองในหน้าที่ของคนหนุ่มซึ่งจะต้องรับใช้ชาติและผดุงความยุติธรรม คนหนุ่มทั่วโลกนับล้านอาสาไปรบ เพื่อพบว่าสนามรบแท้จริงแล้วคือโรงฆ่าสัตว์เราดีๆ นี่เอง
หนึ่งในคนหนุ่มผู้อาสาไปรบคือเออร์เนสต์ เฮมิงเวย์ เขารับหน้าที่พลขับรถพยาบาลของกาชาดในแนวหน้า และถูกส่งไปยังสมรภูมิที่ยุโรป ไปประจำการที่อิตาลี และได้รับบาดเจ็บจนต้องรักษาตัวที่โรงพยาบาลนานถึงหกเดือน เขาบันทึกไว้ว่า “คนหนุ่มไปรบ เราไม่คิดถึงอันตรายหรอก เรื่องเจ็บและตายเกิดกับคนอื่น แต่ไม่ใช่เรา จนได้รับบาดเจ็บสาหัสครั้งแรก เราจึงสำนึกว่าเราเองก็ตายได้” ประสบการณ์คราวนั้นกลายมาเป็นเรื่องราวของนิยายชื่อ A Farewell to Arms บ้านที่เขาเคยอาศัยที่อิตาลีอยู่ใกล้โรงงานปากกา Montegrappa เขาเองก็เคยใช้ปากกานี้ทำงานด้วย
แนวคิดหนึ่งที่เฮมิงเวย์ฝากไว้แก่โลกคือ การระบุว่าคนหนุ่มรุ่นเขาซึ่งเจอพิษนรกของสงครามโลกครั้งแรก คือ Lost Generation หรือคนรุ่นหลงทาง สิ่งหนึ่งที่ผลงานเขาฝากไว้คือจะใช้ชีวิตอย่างไรให้สมกับเป็นมนุษย์ในภาวะเยี่ยงนั้น
เฮมิงเวย์เองใช้ชีวิตอย่างถึงแก่น เขาแต่งงานทั้งหมดสี่ครั้ง อาสาไปทำข่าวสงครามอีกหลายแห่ง ทั้งสงครามกลางเมืองในสเปน จนถึงการยกพลขึ้นบกของกองกำลังสัมพันธมิตรในวันดีเดย์ นอกจากนั้นเขายังชอบเข้าป่าตกปลาล่าสัตว์ทั้งที่สหรัฐฯ ไปซาฟารีที่แอฟริกาจนเครื่องบินตกถึงสองครั้งถึงขั้นบาดเจ็บสาหัส การผจญภัยทั้งชีวิตกลั่นกรองเป็นตัวอักษรของนิยายเรื่อง The Old Man and the Sea เขาได้รับรางวัลโนเบลในสาขาวรรณกรรมเมื่อปี 1954 ทว่าอารมณ์รุนแรง ปัญหาสุขภาพอันเนื่องจากการใช้ชีวิตอย่างหนักหน่วงเข้มข้น เริ่มมีผลต่อชีวิตของเขา ความเครียดและอาการซึมเศร้าทำให้เขาจบชีวิตตัวเองเมื่ออายุเพียง 62 ปี

Established in 1912, Montegrappa of Italy is famous for quality writing tools of exquisite craftsmanship. Their different series of pens are anticipated by the collectors, with the more recent examples being the Apollo 11, the Leonardo da Vinci 500th Anniversary, and, the Queen: A Night at the Opera. Among these storied products are four limited edition Montegrappa pens, designed to represent each chapter of life of Ernest Hemingway.
There is not a soul who has not heard about this major author of the first half of 20th century. Hemingway was a writer and an adventurer who has won a Nobel Prize with one of his novels, The Old Man and the Sea, before ending his life in 1961. The story of his life was so tremendous that Montegrappa had to design these pens as a tribute to him.
Ernest Hemingway was born on 21 July 1899, one year before the start of the 20th century. Science and technology promised the world a better future. Moral integrity, code of ethics and gentleman bravery were never put to test … until the outbreak of World War I. That bleak event resulted in the loss of over 16 million lives, military and otherwise. Young men around the world volunteered to go to war in the name of their country and justice, only to find that the battlefields were merely slaughterhouses.
Ernest Hemingway was one of those young volunteers. As a Red Cross ambulance driver, he was deployed to Europe with a station in Italy where he was hurt and hospitalised for as long as six months. He noted, “When you go to war as a boy you have a great illusion of immortality. Other people get killed; not you. Then when you are badly wounded the first time you lose that illusion and you know it can happen to you”. That experience was told through his novel: A Farewell to Arms. The house where he used to live in Italy was near the factory of Montegrappa and he also used this pen in his literary work.
One important thing he wanted to tell the world is that young men of his time became the Lost Generation because of World War I, and that his novels were written to show how human dignity should be preserved under such circumstances.
Hemingway’s was a life well lived. He was married four times and volunteered to report from several war zones, including the civil war in Spain and the allied invasion on D-Day. Hemingway liked to hunt and fish in the woods when in the US. He went on a safari in Africa and was involved in a plane crash twice – the second one leaving him badly injured. This lifetime of adventures were distilled into the pages of The Old Man and the Sea for which he won a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Unfortunately, intense emotions and health issues from his life choices began to take their toll. Stress and depression drove him to end his life at the age of only 62 years.
His were the simple yet powerful proses, conveying the true feeling from his heart. Such remarkable use of language has earned him his place in the literary world. It continues to impact later generations of writers until today.
