กว่าหลายทศวรรษที่ Mercedes-Benz ได้นำเสนอความหรูหราและนวัตกรรมขั้นสูงสุดผ่านรถตระกูล S-Class

ความหรูหรา ความสะดวกสบาย และความปลอดภัยย่อมเป็นคุณสมบัติหลักในการพิจารณาเลือกซื้อรถยนต์หรูสักคันหนึ่งของลูกค้าในทุกยุคทุกสมัย ในปี ค.ศ. 1951 นั้น Mercedes-Benz ได้เปิดตัวรถยนต์ Model 220 (W181) ซึ่งเป็นการกลับมาผลิตรถยนต์หรูอีกครั้งของแบรนด์หลังจากจุดสิ้นสุดของสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง และเป็นหมุดหมายสำคัญที่จะทำให้บริษัทก้าวขึ้นมาเป็นผู้นำในการผลิตรถยนต์หรูของโลกในอนาคต
ครั้งหนึ่ง วิลเฮห์ม ฮาสเปล์ ประธานกรรมการบริหารของบริษัทได้ให้นิยามของรถยนต์โมเดลใหม่ในปี ค.ศ. 1949 ไว้ด้วยตัวอักษร S ซึ่งย่อมาจากคำว่า Super, Special ในภาษาอังกฤษ หรือ Sonderklasse ในภาษาเยอรมัน การพัฒนารถยนต์หรูยังคงดำเนินต่อไปตามนิยามดังกล่าว จนกระทั่งในปี ค.ศ. 1972 ตัวอักษร S ได้ถูกนำมาใช้เป็นชื่อเรียกรถยนต์ตระกูลใหม่ พร้อมกับการเปิดตัวยานพาหนะซีรีส์แรกในตระกูลอย่าง W116 นี่คือจุดเริ่มต้นอย่างเป็นทางการของ S-Class แม้เวลาจะล่วงเลยมากว่าเจ็ดศตวรรษ แต่ Mercedes-Benz นั้นยังคงขับเคลื่อนยานพาหนะของตนไปสู่ความพิเศษใหม่ๆ เพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการสูงสุดของผู้ใช้งานและรักษาความเป็นผู้นำในวงการของแบรนด์

เมื่อกาลเวลาเปลี่ยนผ่าน รถยนต์ตระกูล S-Class ก็ได้ปรับตัวสู่ความร่วมสมัยเช่นกัน เช่น รถยนต์โมเดลแรกในซีรีส์ W221 นั้นเป็นรถหรูรุ่นแรกที่ได้รับการรับรองด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม ต่อมา รถ S 400 HYBRID ในซีรีส์ W221 เป็นรถหรูรุ่นแรกที่มีระบบไฮบริดและได้รับการรับรองด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม หรือปี ค.ศ. 2013 Mercedes-Benz นั้นได้นำระบบ Intelligent Drive ซึ่งประสานความปลอดภัยและระบบช่วยเหลือผู้ขับขี่มาใช้เป็นครั้งแรกในรถยนต์ซีรีส์ W222 นอกจากนี้ รถยนต์ซีรีส์ W222 ในปี ค.ศ. 2017 ยังมีการเพิ่มระบบ Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC และ Active Streering Assist ซึ่งใช้อุปกรณ์และเทคโนโลยีต่างๆ เช่น ระบบเรดาร์ กล้อง ระบบการนำทาง มาวิเคราะห์และคำนวณการขับขี่เพื่อป้องกันอันตรายแก่ผู้ใช้งาน
อย่างไรก็ตาม มรดกที่สำคัญที่สุดที่รถยนต์ซีรีส์ S-Class เป็นผู้ริเริ่ม คือ เทคโนโลยีต่างๆ อาทิ ระบบเบรกป้องกันล้อล็อก (ค.ศ. 1978) ถุงลมนิรภัย (ค.ศ. 1981) และระบบควบคุมเสถียรภาพการทรงตัว (ค.ศ. 1995) ไม่เพียงนวัตกรรมเหล่านี้จะเพิ่มความปลอดภัยแก่รถยนต์ของ S-Class เท่านั้น แต่ยังสร้างมาตรฐานแก่ยานยนต์ทุกประเภทจนถึงทุกวันนี้
ตลอดเวลากว่าหลายทศวรรษนั้นพิสูจน์ว่า Mercedes-Benz S-Class สามารถตอบโจทย์ในเรื่องของการใช้งาน การสะท้อนตัวตน อีกทั้งยังบ่งบอกถึงความสำเร็จและรสนิยมที่ดีของผู้ครอบครอง สิ่งที่สามารถยืนยันความนิยมในรถตระกูลนี้ คือ ยอดขายกว่าสี่ล้านคันนับตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1951 ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น เมื่อไม่นานมานี้รถตระกูล S-Class ในซีรีส์ W220 ได้รับการโหวตจากผู้อ่านของนิตยสาร Auto Motor und Sport ในประเทศเยอรมนีให้เป็น “Best Car” ในสายรถหรู ประจำปี ค.ศ. 2020 ทั้งหมดนี้จึงเป็นเหตุผลว่า ทำไม S-Class นั้นได้รับการขนานนามในฐานะรถยนต์ที่ดีที่สุดของโลกครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่า
ล่าสุด บริษัทสัญชาติเยอรมันแห่งนี้ได้เปิดตัวรถซีดานซีรีส์ใหม่ W223 ซึ่งเป็น S-Class ซีรีส์ที่เจ็ดของแบรนด์ และจะเริ่มจัดจำหน่ายภายในปี ค.ศ. 2021 รถยนต์ซีรีส์ดังกล่าวของตระกูล S-Class นี้เป็นหลักฐานยืนยันอย่างดีว่า Mercedes-Benz จะยังคงเดินหน้าสร้างปรากฏการณ์แก่วงการรถหรู ผลักดันมาตรฐานใหม่แก่โลกยานยนต์ และสะท้อนตัวตนแห่งความเหนือระดับของผู้ครอบครองต่อไป

Over the decades, S-Class series has been an embodiment of Mercedes-Benz’s luxury and high innovation.

Luxury, comfort and safety are always main attributes to customers in the market for a luxury car. In 1951, Mercedes-Benz launched Model 220 (W181) which marked the return of the brand’s luxury segment production after the end of World War II. Also, this model was the beginning of the brand’s dominant role in executive and luxury class domain in latter time.
CEO Wilhelm Haspel once shaped the new model designation in 1949 with the “S”. The letter stands for “Super” or “Special” in English or “Sonderklasse” in German. The development of luxury cars continued to follow this designation. In 1972, the “S-Class” series was officially introduced to the market, along with its first model, W116. Despite 70 years of its productions, Mercedes-Benz still actively improves its vehicles to new specialties in order to satisfy customers’ demands and maintain the brand’s leadership in the segment.
The uniqueness of every S-Class appears in every detail. The interior and exterior designs are inspired by four concepts: serenity, innovation, sportiness and progress. These ideas reflect S-Class owners’ identity as well. In addition, modern designs of S-Class sedans are more shaped and curved, emphasising the elegance. In terms of performance, Mercedes-Benz always develops its engines to the best and introduces new technical innovations. For instance, the model 300 SEL 6.8 modified for 1971 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps race had such a great performance that AMG, at the time a small company responsible for the car’s modification, became famous overnight. The innovation of AMG was introduced for the first time in the S-Class S 55 AMG model.
As time goes by, up-to-date features are added to the S-Class range. For example, the first model of W221 series was the first car with an environmental certificate. Later, the S 400 HYBRID in W221 series was the first car in the luxury class with hybrid drive. In 2013, Mercedes-Benz introduced its new system called Intelligent Drive, incorporating interconnected safety and driver-assistant systems. Four years later, the 2017 models of W222 series were equipped with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist systems. With the aid of radar system, improved camera and navigation system, these two new systems can monitor the surroundings to help prevent accidents while driving.
Above all, the S-Class series is truly a technology trendsetter. The company has several ground-breaking initiations such as the anti-lock braking system (1978), airbags (1981) and the Electronic Stability Programme (1995). Not only these innovations have made S-Class cars safer, but they also set the new standard used in every new car today.
Over the decades, Mercedes-Benz S-Class series has proven itself to satisfy its customers in every aspect. It is practical and reflective of the owners’ achievement in life and taste in automobile. The sale of four million cars since 1951 is evident of the sustained popularity in the S-Class range. Recently, W220 model series has also been voted to be “Best Car 2020” by readers of German magazine Auto Motor und Sport – yet another affirmation to the car’s long-term fame. The novelty, arriving at the showrooms in 2021, will serve as the next important chapter for Mercedes-Benz in this segment and the pride for discerning individuals who are privileged to own it.
