In a market seemingly dominated by Tesla, other players have been working hard as well to offer what they believe are viable options. Many of them are traditional automobile makers who have since developed or acquired the capabilities to offer hybrid and/or fully electric vehicles. Others are young companies looking to compete with industry giants now that the playing fields are more level than ever before. This article surveys five examples of the latter.
Polestar

It is all right to look at a Polestar and think of a Volvo. In fact, Polestar is a subsidiary of Volvo and its business model since 2017 is to produce and sell electric cars under this name. Polestar is headquartered in Sweden, but its production facilities are in China – both Polestar and Volvo are owned by Chinese automotive company Geely. Polestar 1, the first product introduced, is a hybrid, 2-door sports car. It was followed in 2020 by the first fully electric model Polestar 2. The electric performance fastback offers a maximum range of 233 miles per charge, and a maximum power of 408 horsepower from two electric motors. It will be joined in the future by Polestar 3 which will be an SUV.
Nio

Headquartered in Shanghai, Nio came to our attention in early January when it unveiled its first sedan product ET7 which offers a super generous driving range of 1,000 kilometres per charge and will be ready for delivery in the first quarter of 2022. This follows the successful delivery of some 43,000 vehicles across its range of ES6 and ES8 SUV and EC6 fastback. Nio is Chinese by birth. Its Chinese name, Weilai, means “blue sky coming” – an allusion to a brighter tomorrow. Nio claims international influences through the presence of global design centre in Munich which takes credit for the brand’s overall aesthetics; global R&D Centre in Oxford; and, the North American headquarters in San Jose.
Rivian

The promotional photographs for Rivian’s first two vehicles show a great sense of the outdoor, and an American outdoor at that. Rivian hails from Plymouth, Michigan. The company was founded by a visionary MIT graduate whose eventual goal is to develop vehicles of the future: the ones which are not only electric but also autonomous. The name Rivian is derived from a certain Indian River near his childhood home back in Florida. And the company logo is an interpretation of the compass. In November 2018, Rivian released the first visuals of their fully electric R1T pickup truck and R1S 3-row SUV for on-road and off-road use, scheduled for delivery in 2020 but delayed to summer this year.
Rimac

Led by founder and CEO Mate Rimac, who, at the age of 21, set out to replace a blown combustion engine on his personal race car with an electric powertrain, Rimac Automobili is a Croatian hypercar outfit established in 2011 with 10 employees and has since grown to encompass some 850 employees at the moment. Its operation has been focused on designing and producing electric hypercars and high-performance EV components for the automotive industry of the world. The first product called Concept_One served as the race director’s car at the inaugural season of FIA Formula E Championship in 2014, before commercial production began in 2016. The model was duly followed by an all-new C_Two in 2018.
Aspark

Aspark is a Japanese company from Osaka, founded in 2005. The engineering service company has 25 offices around the world, but it only became a car manufacturer with the 2017 development of the fully electric hypercar Owl. With four permanent magnet synchronous motors and a lightweight carbon fibre body, Aspark can claim for the Owl an astonishing acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 1.9 seconds. Its top speed is 400 kilometres per hour and the battery pack is good for a range of 450 kilometres. The Aspark Owl is a limited production of only 50 units worldwide. The cars are produced in Italy in collaboration with Manifattura Automobili Torino. Delivery has already started last year.
