Bentley celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2019. One year later, the British company employing some 4,000 people in Crewe announced the Beyond100 strategy where they aim for their portfolio of products to be composed of only plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles by 2026. Corresponding with this initiative, the 2021 Bentayga Hybrid is launched as one of the two Bentley plug-in hybrid electric vehicles this year.
The new Bentayga Hybrid is powered by an electric motor and a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged V6 petrol engine. The electric motor, powered by a 17.3 kWh lithium battery which charges fully in two and a half hours, is good for 31 miles of driving in purely electric mode in the city. Whenever additional torque is needed and the driver exceeds the speed of 84 mph, the petrol engine kicks in to provide the needed power, itself capable of delivering 443 bhp and 700 Nm of torque. The combined range is an impressive 536 miles.
Customers can configure this PHEV in two seating options of either the standard five seats or the optional four seats where the rear seats are separated by a centre console. The latter also boasts 30 mm in crease in knee room in the upright position and almost 100 mm in the reclined position for even greater comfort.
Other practical features include a 10.9-inch high resolution touchscreen for the driver and the front seat passenger; a touchscreen remote control tablet for rear seat passengers (a la the Flying Spur); Apple CarPlay wireless connectivity; and, for selected markets, the Android Auto app. The car is embedded with a SIM card so the owner can use the My Bentley connected services to monitor and control charging or to set cabin temperature while you are away.
This new Bentayga Hybrid is the third model after Bentayga V8 and Bentayga Speed. It is expected to become the best-selling member of the family, and without a doubt a next step towards a future of sustainability.
