Let us transport you virtually to three of Europe’s historic but functional clock towers.

We have experienced first-hand the difficulty with which watchmakers work on small movement parts that need to function flawlessly. As much as we are impressed by their skills, we would like to pay tribute to the clockmakers of medieval times whose designs and calculations realised amazing historic clocks without the help of modern-day technology.

Towers with a mechanical clock became commonplace from the 14th century onwards. These were usually tall structures in the middle of a populous area so members of that community could see the time or hear the chimes or the music of the bells that conveyed the passage of the hours. As such, clock towers were found at churches, squares and townhalls as they served as places of gathering. Towers ranged from those with only a bell to ring the time and a combination of a bell and an outward facing dial, to those with additional indications such as the date, month and year, as well as astronomical and planetary charts. Clearly, the significance of clock towers goes beyond the simple act of telling the time but also to mark the paces on religious and agricultural calendars.

Clock towers can be found on all continents of the world today. However, with our work being most closely linked to Switzerland, we dedicate this article to the tower clocks of Europe, beginning with the Zytglogge in Bern, the capital of Switzerland (not Geneva or Zurich as mistaken by a lot of people).

Bern is a small city with charming architecture and interesting urban planning. The current form of the city dates back to 1405 after a great fire that necessitated a massive rebuilding. The Zytglogge is located in the old town part of Bern, which has been designated as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

The exact location of this clock tower was previously a fort. It shows time-telling dials on the west (train station facing side) and the east (river facing side) of the tower. On the east, beneath the time-telling dial, an additional dial serves as the astronomical clock with 24 Roman hour numerals, the moon phase, the day window, the day/night indicator, the Julian calendar and the zodiac calendar. This whole section is an additional component built together with a renovation that lasted three years from 1527.

Automatons are another key attraction of the Zytglogge. This clock tower contains several integrated automatons. At the beginning of the show, a golden rooster will crow to draw the attention of the tourists. The subsequent line-up includes a parade of bears (the city’s animal symbol), the ringing of the bells by the jester, and the flipping of the hourglass by Chronos, the God of Time. Lastly, the golden figure at the top of the tower will strike the bell to the number of hours to signify the time. This amazing clock has been dutifully serving the residents of Bern for more than 500 years. Tourists who are especially interested in how the mechanisms work can take the guided tour as well.

Orloj or the Prague Astronomical Clock in the Czech Republic is older at 610 years. Found on the south side of the old townhall, the Orloj comprises two main dials. The astronomical clock, created by royal clockmaker Mikuláš of Kadaň, shows the 24 hours according to the contemporary and Bohemian systems, the length of daytime and night time that changes with the seasons, and the locations of the sun, moon and north star at that time.

Later in 1490, Hanus Carolinum carried out improvement work and built the second dial to show a calendar of important religious feasts that advances once a day after midnight. At this same time, an automaton of a skeleton was added to the clock tower. Three other wooden automatons followed, bringing the number of automatons on both sides of the astronomical clock to four.

At every top of the hour from 09:00 to 21:00, the skeleton will ring a small bell and the other three automatons will move their heads slightly. Simultaneously, the 12 disciples of Jesus will take turns appearing through the two windows at the top. The show ends with a crow from the golden rooster and the ringing of the bell to mark the number of the hours. As the oldest functioning astronomical clock tower in the world, Orloj draws an endless stream of tourists who are eager to watch the performance of this important cultural legacy.

Lastly, we have Big Ben – a prominent symbol of London, or the United Kingdom even. The truth is that the landmark clock tower’s official title is not Big Ben, which actually refers to the Great Bell installed in the tower, located to the north of Westminster Palace. Two theories exist for the origin of the Big Ben reference: one is Sir Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works who oversaw the installation of the bell; or it could have referred to Benjamin Caunt, a heavyweight boxer of the 19th century.

Regardless of the myth, the Big Ben bell represents the main bell sounding the E note as it chimes the hours. It is surrounded by four smaller bells that give G-Sharp, F-Sharp, E and B notes; in combination, they comprise the famous Westminster Chime every quarter of the hour. This neogothic clock tower stands 96 metres tall. The four dials measure seven metres in diameter, with the hour and minute hands measuring 2.8 and 4.3 metres, respectively. Each dial is intricately decorated with 312 pieces of stained glass.

The tower was built around the same time as the construction of Westminster Palace from 1844 to 1859. There were several setbacks along the way – the most notable of which was the cracking of the first 1.2-metre-tall Big Ben or Great Bell during a test. Subsequently, the Whitechapel Bell Foundry took up the job of producing a replacement bell that weighs 13 tons. Big Ben first performed its function on 11 July 1859, and it continues to work today. The physical tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower in honour of Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Still, to the general public, Big Ben remains the name by which the beloved London landmark is known.

We feature merely three of the world’s prominent clock towers. Having read the anecdotes above, we are sure you will pay even more attention to the details of the next clock tower you see.
