Train Suite Shiki-Shima is an ultra-luxurious train in Japan designed to take 34 passengers on an exploration of the eastern rail routes of the country, offering an immersive travel and cultural experience. Passengers can indulge in the natural beauty of various cities, enjoying scenic views and gaining access to the local way of life at each destination. The train consists of multiple cars, including sleeping cabins and various rooms. There are two special viewing terrace rooms, one located at the front of the train (View Terrace Kizashi) and the other at the rear (View Terrace Ibuki). Accommodation options include Suite rooms (Cars 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9), Deluxe Suite rooms, and the Shiki-Shima Suite (Car 7). The Shiki-Shima Suite is a two-story deluxe room, while the Deluxe Suite and Shiki-Shima rooms feature hot tubs crafted from hinoki cypress wood, showcasing the craftsmanship of artisans from Nagano prefecture, to give passengers that elevated experience of relaxation while enjoying the scenic views through the train’s windows during the journey.
In addition to providing an incredibly impressive comfort, Train Suite Shiki-Shima offers exquisite dining experiences in the dining car. Dining Shiki-Shima (Car 6). serves locally sourced, delicately prepared dishes by experienced chefs, offering a five-star culinary experience. The train also features the Lounge Komorebi (Car 5), where various beverages are served.
Train Suite Shiki-Shima also allows passengers to immerse themselves in local art and culture displayed throughout different corners of the train. The interior of this touristic train is decorated with furniture and items crafted by various artisans from the eastern regions of Japan, including Aizu lacquerware key box from the city of Aizu in Fukushima prefecture, sophisticated wooden furniture from the Akita prefecture, and lamps and trash cans made from beechwood by the Bunaco brand from the Aomori prefecture. Some travel itineraries even include visits to the workshops or craft shops of these artisans.
The schedule for the Train Suite Shiki-Shima’s eastern rail route is available for all four seasons, including the winter. They cater to preferences for weather, activities, and the natural beauty of each season. Travelers can choose between a short trip of two days and one night if they do not have much time, or a longer journey lasting four days and three nights to explore Japan’s beauty and culture in depth.
