Somewhere Lombok on the south coast of Lombok is a sustainable and responsible destination for modern travelers. This striking property of 6,300-square-metre atop a steep hillside with stunning views of Are Guling Bay offers 20 standalone villas with mini plunge pools, all overlooking the lush greenery of the valley and village below.
Lombok is an Indonesian island about 30 minutes east of Bali by airplane. It is best known for breathtaking coastlines and world-class surfing. Sisters Valia and Claire Gontard chose to build a resort on this island because their grandfather was born and raised here. The architectural concept is heavily influenced by their combined backgrounds in the hospitality industry and extensive travels.
The 20 standalone villas are spread across four rows staggered on the hillside, with privacy established via winding pathways. Each one boasts 35 square metres of indoor space, as well as a 16-square-metre terrace with cushioned seating areas and mini private plunge pools. All of the villas are oriented towards the south to maximize natural light. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the property ensure unparalleled sunrise and sunset views.
Here, contemporary living is defined by notions of responsibility, conservation and sustainability. Bathroom amenities are by Sensatia Botanicals, a popular Indonesian brand known for vegan, reef safe, and environmentally friendly products. Other key features include natural ventilation, high thermal performance building materials and reflective building finishes. There are also onsite facilities for harvesting rainwater and composting, and greywater is recycled and reused.
Somewhere Lombok is also mindful of local culture and communities. Everything from the building materials to the decor is regionally sourced and produced. The atmosphere is filled with neutral tones and natural materials like wood, concrete and local stones. Almost all of the furnishings throughout the property were sourced locally through the sisters’ own network and in-depth research. These include intricate rugs, handmade pottery, ceramic vessels and woven baskets by nearby workshops. Bespoke furniture like poolside tables and umbrellas were also produced by artisans on the island.
