อาคาร The Shard ทางฝั่งใต้ของแม่น้ำเธมส์เป็นแลนด์มาร์คอันโดดเด่นของลอนดอนมาตั้งแต่ที่การก่อสร้างเสร็จสิ้นเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2013 ด้วยรูปทรงที่ดูคล้ายแผ่นแก้วบางๆ หลายชิ้นมาประกบกันเป็นปิรามิดผอมสูงชะลูด และ The Shard นี้ก็เป็นอาคารที่สูงที่สุดทางฝั่งตะวันตกของทวีปยุโรปด้วย
The Shard เป็นอาคารประเภทมิกซ์ยูสความสูง 72 ชั้น และในจำนวนนี้มี 18 ชั้นเป็นโรงแรม Shangri-La The Shard, London เริ่มตั้งแต่ชั้น 34 ขึ้นไป นั่นหมายความว่าห้องพักและห้องสวีทจำนวนทั้งหมด 202 ห้องของโรงแรมแห่งนี้จะต้องมีวิวมุมสูงของลอนดอนอย่างไม่มีอะไรมาบดบัง ขนาดห้องพักเริ่มตั้งแต่ 30-48 ตารางเมตรสำหรับห้องแบบ Superior Shard Room ไปจนถึง 43-60 ตารางเมตรสำหรับห้องแบบ Iconic City View Room และสำหรับห้องสวีทนั้นก็มีตั้งแต่ Premier Shard Suite ขนาด 65-71 ตารางเมตรไปจนถึง Shangri-La Suite ขนาด 188-232 ตารางเมตร
เราได้เดินชมโรงแรม Shangri-La แห่งแรกในสหราชอาณาจักรแห่งนี้มาแล้วจึงสามารถพูดได้อย่างเต็มปากเต็มคำว่าเราประทับใจ เริ่มตั้งแต่การที่โรงแรมมีทางเข้าเป็นของตนเองและมีลิฟท์เป็นของตนเอง 2 ตัวเพื่อพาแขกจากระดับพื้นดินขึ้นไปยังล็อบบี้ชั้น 34 โดยไม่ต้องปะปนกับคนที่จะขึ้นไปยังส่วนออฟฟิศของตึกหรือนักท่องเที่ยวอื่นที่จะขึ้นไปยังจุดชมวิวบนยอดตึกThe Shard
เพียงขึ้นมาที่ชั้นล็อบบี้ที่มีห้องอาหารต่างๆ นั้นก็ประทับใจต่อเนื่องกับทัศนียภาพที่สามารถมองเห็นแลนด์มาร์คต่างๆ ของลอนดอนได้อย่างชัดเจน จากนั้นหากจะขึ้นไปยังห้องพักจึงใช้ลิฟท์อีกชุดหนึ่ง และเป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่าห้องพักที่นี่จำนวนมากอยู่สูงกว่าห้องสวีท นั่นเป็นเพราะว่ารูปทรงของตึกที่สอบเข้าเรื่อยๆ ตามความสูงที่เพิ่มขึ้น ชั้นที่สูงกว่าจึงมีพื้นที่ใช้สอยจริงน้อยกว่า ดังนั้นห้องสวีททั้งหมด 17 ห้องจึงไม่ได้อยู่ชั้นสูงมากนักเพราะว่าแต่ละสวีทนั้นก็มีขนาดใหญ่โตอยู่
ห้อง Shangri-La Suite ที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดนั้นมีแขกเข้าพักอยู่ในวันที่เราไปเยือนโรงแรมแห่งนี้ แต่ว่าเรายังเข้าไปชมห้อง London Suite ได้เนื่องจากยังไม่ถึงเวลาเช็คอินของแขก London Suite ขนาด 117 ตารางเมตรนี้อยู่บนชั้น 38 ของอาคาร จากบริเวณห้องนั่งเล่นสามารถชมวิวไปทางทิศตะวันตกได้ไกลถึงสะพานวอเตอร์ลูและอาสนวิหารเซนต์พอล ทางด้านตะวันออกของห้องนั่งเล่นมีโต๊ะทำงานขนาดใหญ่วิวสะพานทาวเวอร์พอดีซึ่งเราคิดว่าเอาเข้าจริงๆ แล้วคงไม่มีใครได้นั่งทำงานที่โต๊ะนี้เพราะคงจะนั่งดูวิวเสียมากกว่า ในห้องนั่งเล่นนี้มีกล้องส่องทางไกลพร้อมขากล้องขนาดใหญ่ไว้ให้แขกที่เข้าพักใช้ซูมไปยังแลนด์มาร์คต่างๆ ได้ด้วยแบบเพลินๆ
London Suite มีห้องนอน 1 ห้อง มีห้องแต่งตัวแบบวอล์คอิน และมีห้องอาบน้ำพื้นหินอ่อนขนาดใหญ่ที่มีอ่างอาบน้ำอยู่ชิดกระจกให้คุณเห็นวิวแม่น้ำเธมส์ได้เต็มตา กระจกเงาในห้องอาบน้ำมีโทรทัศน์ขนาด 19 นิ้วฝังอยู่ข้างในด้วยและเครื่องอาบน้ำต่างๆ เป็นของ Acqua Di Parma เพื่อเติมเต็มประสบการณ์การพักผ่อนที่เหนือชั้น
เราคิดว่าโรงแรม Shangri-La The Shard, London แห่งนี้เหมาะสำหรับทั้งผู้ที่มาเยือนลอนดอนเป็นครั้งแรกและผู้ที่เคยมาแล้วหลายครั้ง และไม่ว่าคุณจะเลือกห้องพักหรือห้องสวีทแบบใด เมื่อคุณมาพักที่โรงแรมแห่งนี้แล้วก็อย่าลืมขึ้นไปใช้บริการสระว่ายน้ำแบบอินฟินิตี้บนชั้น 52 สระที่สูงที่สุดในลอนดอนสระนี้หันหน้าไปทางทิศตะวันตก เวลากลางวันจึงมองเห็นวิวได้ไกลถึงบิ๊กเบน และในช่วงค่ำก็จะเป็นจุดชมดวงอาทิตย์ที่ดีเลิศด้วยเช่นกัน
อีกฟากหนึ่งบนชั้นเดียวกันนี้เป็นพื้นที่ของบาร์โรงแรมที่สูงที่สุดในลอนดอนและในยุโรปที่มีชื่อว่า Gong บาร์แห่งนี้หันออกทางทิศเหนือและทิศตะวันออกจึงมองเห็นสะพานทาวเวอร์ หอคอยแห่งลอนดอน ตึกระฟ้าต่างๆ ของย่านการเงิน และแม้แต่เรือรบหลวงเบลฟาสท์บนแม่น้ำ เมนูเครื่องดื่มตั้งชื่อและปูพื้นเรื่องราวอ้างอิงถึงประเทศต่างๆ ในเอเชียที่มีโรงแรม Shangri-La ตั้งอยู่ เราเป็นคนเอเชียก็อาจจะไม่อินเท่าคนจากชาติตะวันตกแต่ก็เลือกสั่งเพื่อความแปลกใหม่ได้เหมือนกัน
Gong เปิดรับลูกค้าจากทุกที่ ไม่ได้รับเฉพาะแขกที่มาเข้าพักที่โรงแรมเท่านั้น ดังนั้นถึงคุณเข้าพักโรงแรมอื่นที่ลอนดอนก็น่าจะมาสั่งอะไรสักแก้วหรือสองแก้วที่นี่เพื่อชมวิว อย่าลืมจองทางหน้าเว็บของเขาก่อนมาด้วยเพื่อให้ชัวร์ว่าคุณจะได้โต๊ะ Gong เปิดวันจันทร์ถึงวันพุธเวลา 16.00 – 00.30 น. และวันพฤหัสบดีถึงวันอาทิตย์เวลา 12.00-01.00 น.

Since it was completed in 2013, The Shard on the south bank of the Thames rises prominently in the London cityscape, becoming a contemporary landmark – thanks to its striking visual appearance of multiple glass shards coming together like a slender pyramid. It is also the tallest building in western Europe.
A major part of this mixed-use building, located in the vicinity of Tate Modern and Borough Market, is the Shangri-La The Shard, London, which occupies 18 out of the 72 habitable storeys, beginning from the 34th floor upwards. And as you can already guess, the property’s 202 rooms and suites all offer incredible views of the city. This ranges from the Superior Shard Room of 30-48 square metres to the Iconic City View Room of 43-60 square metres, and from the Premier Shard Suite of 65-71 square metres to the Shangri-La Suite of 188-232 square metres.
We toured this first Shangri-La hotel in the United Kingdom the day before we attended The OAK Collection exhibition in May (Pages 72-77), and we were mightily impressed. First of all, the hotel boasts its own entrance and two elevators that go from the street level to the 34th floor lobby. Guests will never be inconvenienced by or even see foot traffic in the office part of The Shard or the line of tourists who queue up for the building’s viewing platforms at the very top.
The view is already stunning from the lobby and restaurants. From this level, more elevators whisk guests quickly up to their rooms. It is also interesting to note that some of the rooms are positioned higher than the suites. Due to the pyramidal shape of the building, there is less and less floor space as you go higher, and some of the 17 suites are massive.
The largest Shangri-La Suite was occupied on the day of our visit, but the London Suite we hoped to see was still available for viewing ahead of the check-in time. Located on the 38th floor, the 117-square-metre dwelling features a spacious living room with a view as far west as the Waterloo Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral. A full-sized executive writing desk in an eastern corner overlooks the Tower Bridge directly but we doubt if anyone would get any real work done with such a spectacular panoramic view. A large monocular is also provided on a tripod just in case you want to zoom in on the various landmarks below.
This one-bedroom suite features a walk-in dressing room and a large marble-clad bathroom whose bathtub also affords a similar view on the Thames. A 19-inch television is embedded in the bathroom mirror, and Acqua Di Parma toiletries further pamper guests of this elite retreat experience.
Regardless of the accommodation type, once here, you need to make use of the hotel’s infinity swimming pool – the highest of its kind in London on the 52nd floor. As it faces the west, guests get to enjoy the view towards Big Ben during the daytime and the spectacular sunset in the evening.
On the other side of the same floor is Gong, Europe’s highest hotel bar. Facing the north and the east, Gong offers its patrons a magnificent view of the Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, the skyscrapers over in the financial district and the HMS Belfast on the Thames. Its main drinks menu pays tribute to the Asian origins of Shangri-La, with creations that touch upon countries linked with the hotel chain itself.
Gong marks the kind of place that will be worth your while. Even if you are not staying here, or should we say especially if you are not staying here, you should try to come over for a drink or two, at the very least to enjoy the view. A reservation is recommended due to the venue’s popularity. Gong is open from 16:00 to 00:30 from Monday to Wednesday, and from 12:00 noon to 01:00 from Thursday to Sunday.
