เปิดประวัติ Samaritaine ห้างหรูใจกลางที่เติบโตและเปลี่ยนแปลงตามกาลเวลามานานเกือบ 155 ปี

Samaritaine คือชื่อของห้างสรรพสินค้าที่ตั้งอยู่ริมสะพานปงต์เนิฟ ห่างจากพิพิธภัณฑ์ลูฟวร์เพียงแค่ 350 เมตร และเป็นจุดหมายที่นักท่องเที่ยวจากทั่วโลกให้ความสนใจมาเยือน จุดเริ่มต้นของห้างแห่งนี้คือการเป็นร้านเล็กๆ ซึ่งเปิดที่บริเวณหัวมุมถนนรูดูปงต์เนิฟตัดกับถนนรูเดอลาโมนเนในปี ค.ศ. 1870 ชื่อร้าน La Samaritaine ตั้งแต่รูปปั้นหญิงชาวซามาริตันในพระคัมภีร์ที่ใช้ตกแต่งโรงสูบน้ำยุคศตวรรษที่ 17 ซึ่งครั้งหนึ่งเคยทำหน้าที่สูบน้ำจากแม่น้ำแซนขึ้นมาใช้ในย่านลูฟวร์
ธุรกิจของห้างนี้เติบใหญ่อย่างต่อเนื่องจนกระทั่งในปี ค.ศ. 1890 จึงได้มีการขยายเข้าไปใช้พื้นที่ของอาคารที่อยู่ใกล้เคียงกันหลายอาคาร แล้วจึงมีการสร้างอาคารแห่งใหม่ขึ้นโดยเฉพาะในปี ค.ศ. 1910 โดยมีจุดเด่นอยู่ที่หลังคาแบบกระจกขนาดใหญ่และการตกแต่งในสไตล์อาร์ทนูโว และเมื่อถึงช่วงปี ค.ศ. 1925 ห้าง La Samaritaine ก็ขึ้นถึงจุดสูงสุดแห่งการเป็นแหล่งรวมแฟชั่น ของแต่งบ้าน หนังสือ อาหารและสินค้าประเภทอื่นๆ อีกมากมาย แล้วจึงมีการสร้างอาคารในสไตล์อาร์ทเดโคขึ้นอีกอาคารหนึ่งในปี ค.ศ. 1928 โดยหันหน้าออกทางแม่น้ำเพื่อรองรับการเติบโตของกิจการและความต้องการของผู้คน
กลุ่ม LVMH ซื้อหุ้น 55% ของกิจการห้าง Samaritaine ในปี ค.ศ. 2001 ก่อนที่จะมีการหารือกับฝ่ายบริหารของกรุงปารีสในช่วงปี ค.ศ. 2007-2008 ว่าจะพัฒนาพื้นที่แห่งนี้ใหม่ให้กลายเป็นโครงการแบบมิกซ์ยูสโดยคงไว้ซึ่งมรดกทางด้านสถาปัตยกรรมพร้อมตอบโจทย์ข้อกำหนดของมาตรฐานความปลอดภัยสมัยใหม่ในเวลาเดียวกันได้อย่างไร ในช่วงของการศึกษาความเป็นไปได้ในเชิงเทคนิคและการขอใบอนุญาตต่างๆ นั้นเอง LVMH ก็ได้ซื้อหุ้นส่วนที่เหลือของ Samaritaine ในปี ค.ศ. 2010 การก่อสร้างกินเวลาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2015-2020 ก่อนที่ห้าง Samaritaine โฉมใหม่จะเปิดให้บริการในเดือนมิถุนายน ค.ศ. 2021
ปัจจุบันนี้ Samaritaine นำเสนอว่าห้างของตนนั้นเป็นสถานที่แห่งการค้นพบ ความประหลาดใจและประสบการณ์ใหม่ๆ โดยผสมผสานประวัติศาสตร์ที่ยาวนานเข้ากับกลิ่นอายแห่งความทันสมัย พื้นที่โครงการมีขนาดกว่า 20,000 ตารางเมตรโดยแบ่งเป็น 3 อาคารด้วยกัน ได้แก่ อาคารสไตล์อาร์ทเดโคริมน้ำที่กลายเป็นโรงแรม Cheval Blanc Paris อาคารสไตล์อาร์ทนูโวที่มีหลังคาเป็นกระจกที่นำเสนอเป็นภาพประกอบหลักในบทความนี้ซึ่งปัจจุบันเรียกว่าอาคาร Pont Neuf และมีแผนกต่างๆ ส่วนมากในห้างอยู่ภายใน ส่วนอาคารสมัยใหม่ที่มีฟาซาดด้านหน้าเป็นกระจกโค้งไปมาซึ่งเพิ่งสร้างขึ้นใหม่นั้นเรียกว่าอาคาร Rivoli ตามชื่อถนนที่อยู่ด้านหน้าอาคาร ภายในมีคอนเซปท์สโตร์ต่างๆ และสินค้ากลุ่มสตรีทแวร์เพื่อลูกค้ารุ่นอายุน้อยโดยเฉพาะ

Located only 350 meters by foot from the Louvre Museum, Samaritaine by the Pont Neuf Bridge has become a destination of its own for visitors from around the world. The origin of this department store can be traced back to 1870 when a small shop was opened on the corner of Rue du Pont Neuf and Rue de la Monnaie. It was given the name La Samaritaine after the statue of biblical Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well that was used to decorate a 17th century pump house that drew water from the River Seine to supply the Louvre quarter.
During the decades from 1890, that business prospered and expanded into a collection of adjacent buildings, before a completely new building was constructed in 1910 with a huge glass roof and an art nouveau decoration. By 1925, La Samaritaine has reached its height as the go-to place for all fine things from fashion and home decoration to books and food. Another art deco building facing the river was then added in 1928 to cope with growth and demand.
Fast forward to the modern days, LVMH has acquired 55% shares of Samaritaine in 2001. Discussions took place with the City of Paris between 2007 and 2008 to redevelop the complex into a mixed-use property in order to safeguard the architectural heritage of the site while also complying with contemporary safety standards. While technical studies were carried out and permits were obtained, LVMH acquired the remaining shares in Samaritaine in 2010. Construction work took place from 2015 to 2020 and the new Samaritaine opened its door in June 2021.
Today, Samaritaine presents itself as a place of discovery, surprise and experience, blending the heritage spirit with crisp contemporary flair. The complex spans over 20,000 square meters across three buildings. The art deco building by the river is now dedicated to the Cheval Blanc Paris Hotel. The glass-roofed art nouveau building with the iconic peacock fresco, referred to as the Pont Neuf Building and shown throughout this article, houses the majority of the departments. Meanwhile, the new modern building with wavy glass facade, called the Rivoli Building after the street it fronts, proposes modern concept store and streetwear for younger customers specifically.
The store features a curation of more than 600 established and emerging brands in fashion, beauty, watch and jewelry. However, if you are short on time, do give Loulou on the ground floor of the Pont Neuf Building a visit. This lifestyle space of 200 square meters takes the nickname of the wife of the original store’s founder. It is intended to showcase a little bit of everything at all price ranges from France and elsewhere in the world, plus cute Samaritaine souvenirs to remember your visit by.
Samaritaine Paris Pont Neuf department store is operated by DFS, a subsidiary of LVMH. It is open daily, except on 1 May, from 10:00 to 20:00. Do give it a visit the next time you find yourself in Paris!
