ดิฉันคิดว่าผู้มาเยืนทุกคนควรจะได้สัมผัสกับเสน่ห์ของทะเลสาบโคโมบนผิวน้ำ เพราะสิ่งที่ไม่เคยเปลี่ยนแปลงของทะเลสาบแห่งนี้ก็คือความสวยงามของวิลล่าและสวนสวยริมน้ำทั้งหลายที่ซ่อนตัวอยู่หลังกำแพงพุ่มไม้และรั้วประตู ซึ่งคุณจะเห็นได้ก็ต่อเมื่อคุณอยู่บนผิวน้ำเท่านั้น คุณสามารถจองเรือโบราณแล้วให้กัปตันเป็นคนเล่าเรื่องราวต่างๆ ให้ฟังก็ได้ นั่งเรือเล็กหรือเรือเฟอรีที่มีทั้งนักท่องเที่ยวและคนท้องถิ่นก็ได้ หรือเช่าเรือยนต์ขับเที่ยวชมทะเลสาบเองก็ได้

Yes, it is really that effortless, despite the distance. Lake Como in northern Italian region of Lombardy has been a popular tourist destination since the 19th century, when it became fashionable among the European aristocracy and artists for its stunning natural beauty and pleasant climate. Covering an area of 146 square kilometers, it is surrounded by charming towns such as Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio, among others. The lake’s picturesque landscapes and serene atmosphere have continued to attract modern travelers, including celebrities and international tourists.
Today, Lake Como draws a diverse clientele, with a significant number of visitors coming from Germany, United Kingdom, other parts of Europe and the United States, all captivated by its scenic vistas, luxurious villas and cultural heritage. We speak with Valentina De Santis who shares insights into the locale as the CEO and owner of Grand Hotel Tremezzo and Passalacqua.
Please tell us one characteristic of the Lake Como area that has never changed over the years.
I think every visitor should explore Lake Como’s charms on the water. The characteristic are the prettiest lakeside villas and gardens hidden behind hedges and gates, so you can’t miss the experience from the lake! You can book a vintage cruiser and let your captain guide you, hop on a typical battello (Italian for a dinghy or small boat carried on a larger boat to take passengers ashore), or ferry, crowded with a perfect mix of visitors and locals, or take the helm in your own motorboat rental.
What is the minimum length of stay for someone to truly enjoy the essence of Lake Como? (Not the number of days to completely explore everything).
It is about three days.
What should first-time visitors to Lake Como expect in the different seasons?
Lake Como is a magical place suspended in time in every season, and heritage is something we takevery seriously here – and yet, this place somehow manages to reinvent itself for each new generation! I am confident in the region’s ability to keep reinventing itself, and I look forward to continuing to do my part in making Lake Como the best destination it can be!
How do hotels and resorts in this area generally compete with each other?
We are certainly living a new golden era on Lake Como. As I mentioned, Lake Como always manages to appeal to each new generation, and rings true. I don’t like to think of it in terms of better or worse; all anyone can really do is try to be the best destination possible for the travelers you have. We have seen countless improvements in the area, from new roads and tunnels to water quality and online ferry tickets, with many more in the pipeline, and the enthusiasm for Lake Como is at an all-time high. So, we should count all of that as win. It means that every place hotel and resort in the area has its own personality and key values.
You operate two properties that differ in terms of size and vibe. Please tell us the intended client categories for Grand Hotel Tremezzo and for Passalacqua.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo, is by definition, a “grand” hotel in every sense of the phrase, while Passalacqua feels more like a private home, where guests enjoy a more intimate experience. The common denominator of the two — besides the splendid Lake Como views! — is the sense of family hospitality.
For Passalacqua, please share more details about how guests can join your gelataio, chefs and gardeners as they go about their work? Can they casually walk up to them or do you have scheduled sessions at specific times of the day?
We do have a special program called “Every day is a gift”, every day we give a special gift, as an activity, to our guests in a specific timing or we curate an organized, customized experience. Cruise on the lake, lounge by the pool, knead pasta with Viviana—or stop doing and just be, with the lake breeze on your skin. First and foremost, it must have to be a sense of place — the very thing we have worked so hard to create at Passalacqua. This is not an exact science, of course, but you know it when you see it: a combination of local flair, our personal style and unexpected details that will stay with you after you leave.
Villeggiatura is a lost art of travel, the age-old practice of leaving the city behind and spending the summer in a country manor or a lakeside estate like our own. An anachronism in our fast-paced times, villeggiatura is all about slowing down to enjoy nature’s beauty and life’s simple pleasures. This is why it is so perfect for Passalacqua, where you can do as much or as little as you like. Passalacqua speaks directly to your heart from the past. What I love the most of this place is the way time seems stopping and you can dedicate your days to the simple pleasures of life and to what we love calling the “dolce far niente”, the “sweetness of doing nothing”.
With so many options in the area, what do you think is the quality or characteristic of your properties that wins repeat business for you?
I believe there are personal details that stand out, like fresh-picked flowers in your room, a staff member who remembers your name or your favourite drink. You can have the most beautiful location and the most beautiful rooms, but it is the people that really make a hotel.
How do you see the future trend of traveling or vacations? What would be the greatest challenge for you going forward?
I always have a very long list of projects in the pipeline, both big and small. After all, in the pursuit of excellence, even the tiniest detail can make a big difference. What I know for sure is that standing still is not an option! We are big dreamers in this family; I know there are still many roads to travel and many surprises waiting for me on my journey. My motto is: ‘If you can dream it, you can do it’, and I intend to keep on dreaming and dreaming as long as I can.
