Aviation data and analytics leader Cirium published the first edition of Airline Insight Review in 2020 to look at the impacts caused by the pandemic. The ensuing success led them to produce the 2021 edition which reveals some promising figures. Tracking full months data from January to October 2021, the report noted recovery of passenger flights from 15,000,000 in 2020 to 17,882,000 in 2021. The figure is still 38% below 28,980,000 flights tracked in 2019.
The five busiest airports in the world in 2021 were all in the United States. They are Atlanta (ATL), Chicago (ORD), Dallas (DFW), Denver (DEN) and Charlotte (CLT). The five busiest routes were between Jeju and Seoul Gimpo (CJU-GMP), Seoul Gimpo and Busan Gimhae (GMP-PUS), Jeddah and Riyadh (JED-RUH), Fukuoka and Haneda Tokyo (FUK-HND), and, Haneda Tokyo and Sapporo (HND-CTS).
According to Cirium’s forecasts, domestic passenger traffic worldwide should return to pre-pandemic levels this year, while international traffic should be close behind at two-thirds pre-pandemic levels. Where business travel is concerned, Cirium cited Global Business Travel Association which projected 36% increase in this year with business events and meetings slowly returning to the scene. GBTA predicts full recovery of business travel by the end of 2024.
Cirium published another report at the end of the year: the On-Time Performance Review 2021. Globally, the most on-time airline is All Nippon Airways with 95.04% on-time arrival of the 62,146 flights operated. It is followed closely behind by fellow compatriot Japan Airlines with 94.13% on-top arrival rate of the 66,155 flights operated. The world’s most on-time airport happens to be Japanese as well. It is Tokyo’s Haneda Airport with 95.55% on-time departure rate for the 154,158 flights operated.
