โครงการ Rolex Awards for Enterprise ประกาศรายชื่อ 5 บุคคลผู้ทรงเกียรติประจำรอบปี 2023

ฮันส์ วิลส์ดอร์ฟ ผู้ก่อตั้ง Rolex เปรียบโลกนี้เป็นดั่งห้องทดลองที่มีชีวิต และได้เริ่มทดสอบนาฬิกาในห้องทดลองที่แสนกว้างใหญ่นี้มาตั้งแต่ช่วงทศวรรษที่ 1930 เริ่มจากสนับสนุนการเดินทางไปสำรวจดินแดนที่ยังไม่มีผู้ใดรู้จัก ดินแดนที่มีภูมิประเทศและภูมิอากาศสุดหฤโหด เพื่อการค้นพบสิ่งใหม่
แต่เมื่อกาลเวลาผันผ่าน โลกเราเปลี่ยนแปลงไป การสนับสนุนการสำรวจและผจญภัยเพื่อการค้นพบสิ่งใหม่ของ Rolex ก็ได้ต่อยอดไปสู่การอนุรักษ์โลก โดยมุ่งเน้นให้การสนับสนุนแก่บุคคลและองค์กรที่ใช้วิทยาศาสตร์ในการเรียนรู้ ทำความเข้าใจ และหาทางแก้ปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมในปัจจุบัน เพื่อสร้างประโยชน์และความยั่งยืนให้แก่คนรุ่นหลัง จนเกิดเป็นโครงการ Perpetual Planet Initiative ในปี 2019
ในช่วงแรกของโครงการจะเน้นการพิทักษ์มหาสมุทร โดยเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการ Mission Blue และเน้นทำความเข้าใจปัญหาการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสภาพภูมิอากาศร่วมกับสมาคม National Geographic Society ก่อนจะขยายขอบเขตความร่วมมือกับองค์กรต่าง ๆ เพื่อให้ครอบคลุมการอนุรักษ์ในหลายด้าน เช่น Coral Gardeners องค์กรปลูกแนวปะการัง, Rewilding Argentina และ Rewilding Chile องค์กรที่ปกป้องภูมิประเทศในทวีปอเมริกาใต้ ทั้งยังมีการมอบทุนการศึกษาและทุนสนับสนุน เช่น The Rolex Explorers Club Grants ให้แก่เหล่านักสำรวจ นักวิทยาศาสตร์ และนักอนุรักษ์รุ่นใหม่อีกด้วย
โครงการ Perpetual Planet Initiative ที่ Rolex ริเริ่มขึ้นนี้ มีการมอบรางวัล Rolex Awards for Enterprise ให้แก่บุคคลทรงเกียรติที่อุทิศตนเพื่อพัฒนาชีวิตผู้คนและปกป้องโลกของเรา ไม่ว่าบุคคลผู้นั้นจะประกอบสัมมาชีพใด มีเชื้อชาติหรือสัญชาติใด โดยโครงการที่ได้รับรางวัลนี้จะเป็นโครงการใหม่หรือที่ยังดำเนินการอยู่ ด้วยปณิธานที่ว่า Rolex เป็นองค์กรที่มุ่งมั่นพัฒนาทุกชีวิตบนโลกอย่างต่อเนื่อง และต้องการให้ความช่วยเหลือโลกในวงกว้างขึ้น
และบุคคลผู้ทรงเกียรติ 5 ท่านที่ได้รับรางวัล Rolex Awards for Enterprise ในปี 2023 ได้แก่ คอนสแตนติโน อัคคา ชูตัส นักชีววิทยาชาวเปรูพื้นเมือง ผู้ขยายโครงการฟื้นฟูและปกป้องระบบนิเวศป่าไม้ในพื้นที่สูงของเทือกเขาแอนดีส โดยมีชุมชนเป็นศูนย์กลาง หลิว เสาช่วง นักวิทยาศาสตร์การบินและอวกาศชาวจีน ผู้ศึกษาถิ่นที่อยู่อาศัยของอูฐป่า เพื่อสร้างเขตอนุรักษ์ใหม่สองแห่ง สำหรับคุ้มครองอูฐป่าฝูงสุดท้ายที่เหลืออยู่ไม่ถึง 1,000 ตัว ตลอดจน เบธ โคอิกิ ผู้ประกอบการเพื่อสังคมรุ่นใหม่ชาวเคนย่า ผู้จัดหาเครื่องกำเนิดไฟฟ้าพลังงานแสงอาทิตย์สำหรับกักเก็บน้ำจากอากาศให้แก่ประชาชน 3,000 คน ใน 10 ชุมชนที่ต้องการแหล่งน้ำสะอาด
นอกจากนั้นก็ยังมี แองซา โกเน นักอนุรักษ์ชาวไอวอรี่ ผู้ปกป้องผืนป่าที่มีความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพอย่างอุดมสมบูรณ์ในไอวอรี่ โคสต์ พร้อมทั้งปกป้องสัตว์ที่ใกล้สูญพันธ์ุ และลดความยากจนในพื้นที่ และ เดนิกา เรียดินี-เฟลช นักเศรษฐศาสตร์พัฒนาชาวอินโดนีเซีย ผู้ขยายห่วงโซ่อุปทานในอุตสาหกรรมเสื้อผ้าจากฟาร์มสู่ตู้เสื้อผ้าแห่งแรก ๆ ของโลก ขับเคลื่อนพลังของผู้หญิง และอนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่นของอินโดนีเซีย

Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf viewed the world as a living laboratory, and for this reason, he began testing watches in this vast laboratory since the 1930s. It started with supporting expeditions to explore uncharted territories with extreme terrains and climates to discover new things.
But as time passed, the world changed, and Rolex’s support for exploration and adventure to uncover new things evolved into a focus on conserving the planet. The emphasis shifted towards supporting individuals and organisations using science to learn, understand, and address current environmental issues, with the aim to ensure benefits and sustainability for future generations. This led to the inception of the Perpetual Planet initiative in 2019.
Initially, the initiative focused on ocean conservation as part of the Mission Blue project, and it sought to understand climate change issues in collaboration with the National Geographic Society. Additional partnerships were formed with other organisations in order to cover conservation efforts in other fields as well. This includes those ones like Coral Gardeners for reef restoration; and, Rewilding Argentina and Rewilding Chile for the protection of landscapes in South America. It also offers scholarships and grants to a new generation of explorers, scientists, and conservationists through The Rolex Explorers Club Grants program.
The Perpetual Planet Initiative initiated by Rolex also presents the Rolex Awards for Enterprise to honourable individuals dedicated to improving people’s lives and protecting our world, regardless of their profession, nationality, or ethnicity. Projects receiving these awards can be either new initiatives or ongoing ones, with the overarching goal of Rolex being the entity determined to improve the quality of all lives and bring assistance to the farther ends of the world.
In 2023, five esteemed individuals received the Rolex Awards for Enterprise. Indigenous Peruvian biologist Constantino Aucca Chutas has expanded a project to restore and protect forest ecosystems in the highlands of the Andes, with the community at its centre. Chinese aerospace scientist Liu Shaochuang has studied the habitat of wild camels to establish two new conservation reserves for the protection of the last remaining specimens, which amount to under 1,000. Meanwhile, Kenyan social entrepreneur Beth Koigi has provided solar-powered generators harvesting water from the air to 3,000 people in 10 communities in need of clean water.
Ivorian conservationist Inza Koné has protected the biodiverse forests in the Ivory Coast, preventing species extinction and reducing poverty in the area. Lastly, Indonesian development economist Denica Riadini-Flesch has worked to expand one of the world’s first regenerative farm-to-closet clothing supply chains, strengthening women’s empowerment and preserving local Indonesian cultures.
