จากอุทกภัยและความสูญเสียครั้งใหญ่สู่การออกผลิตภัณฑ์ที่เป็นตัวแทนแห่งการเริ่มต้นอีกครั้ง

กองบรรณาธิการของเราได้รับเชิญให้ไปร่วมงานชิมไวน์อยู่บ่อยครั้ง แต่ผมปฏิเสธเกือบทุกครั้งเนื่องจากคิดว่าตนเองไม่มีความรู้เรื่องไวน์พอจะเขียนบทความจริงจัง และพอจะเขียนอะไรขึ้นมาก็ติดเงื่อนไขข้อห้ามของ พรบ. ควบคุมเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอลอีก แต่ผมตอบตกลงในครั้งนี้เพราะผมรู้สึกตื่นเต้นกับชื่อ Lost Barrels ของไวน์ชุดนี้ที่ Meyer-Näkel ต้องการจะนำเสนอ ฟังชื่อแล้วน่าจะมีเรื่องราวอะไรน่าสนใจอยู่เบื้องหลัง และลึกๆ แล้วผมก็ต้องการพักสมองจากงานที่ต้องเร่งรีบทำให้เสร็จก่อนสิ้นปีด้วยเลยคิดว่าการได้ไปเจอผู้คนใหม่ๆ และพูดคุยเรื่องที่แตกต่างจากตารางงานปกติน่าจะมีประโยชน์
Meyer-Näkel เป็นผู้ผลิตไวน์จากเขตอาร์ของประเทศเยอรมนี และเป็นผู้ประสบภัยจากเหตุน้ำท่วมครั้งใหญ่เมื่อเดือนกรกฎาคม ค.ศ. 2021 ซึ่งทำลายทุกสิ่งรวมถึงห้องเก็บไวน์ที่ไร่ของ Meyer-Näkel ด้วย ไวน์ที่เป็นวินเทจ 2020 ทั้งหมดถูกพัดหายไปจนไม่เหลืออะไรเลย อย่างไรก็ดี เมื่อน้ำลดแล้วก็มีผู้คนในแถบนั้นซึ่งบ้างก็เป็นไร่องุ่นคู่แข่งแต่ใจดีเก็บกู้ถังไวน์ที่มีตรา Meyer-Näkel มาส่งคืนให้ ในจำนวนนี้มีเพียง 9 ถังที่อยู่ในสภาพสมบูรณ์ดีจึงนำไปบรรจุขวดขายในชื่อ Lost Barrels โดยแบ่งได้ถังละ 280 ขวดพอดี
สองพี่น้องดอร์เตและไมเคอ นาเคิลเป็นเจ้าของและผู้บริหารรุ่นที่ 3 ของธุรกิจไร่องุ่นแห่งนี้ที่ก่อตั้งเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1950 ทั้งสองออกเดินสายประชาสัมพันธ์ไวน์ Lost Barrels และแบรนด์ Meyer-Näkel ให้โลกได้รู้จักโดยเลือกกรุงเทพมหานครเป็นจุดหมายสำหรับภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และใช้ Sühring เป็นสถานที่จัดงานที่เหมาะเจาะอย่างมาก เพราะว่าเชฟโธมัสและเชฟแมทธิอัสซึ่งเป็นคนเยอรมันอยู่แล้วย่อมสามารถเลือกจัดอาหารที่จะทำให้ผู้มาร่วมงานได้สัมผัสถึงตัวตนของไวน์ทั้ง 9 ตัวนี้ได้อย่างลึกซึ้งที่สุด
Meyer-Näkel และ Sühring ค่อยเสิร์ฟไวน์ออกมาเป็นชุดละ 3 ตัวซึ่งในแต่ละชุดนั้นก็มีไวน์ที่ทำให้คนไม่ถนัดไวน์อย่างผมประทับใจชุดละตัว ตัวแรกที่ผมชอบคือ Barrel Two ซึ่งเก็บกู้ได้ที่แดร์โนเพราะมีความเผ็ดเบาๆ ที่เข้ากับแอปเพไทเซอร์อย่างตับเป็ดและปลาไหลรมควันได้อย่างลงตัว ตัวที่สองที่ผมชอบคือ Barrel Six ซึ่งเก็บกู้ได้ที่วัลพอร์ซไฮม์เนื่องจากเป็นไวน์ที่ให้รสเบาแบบผู้ดีอย่างที่ยากจะบรรยาย (เพราะความรู้เรื่องไวน์จำกัดด้วยและเพราะพรรณนามากก็จะผิดกฎหมายอีก) คุณไมเคอเห็นผมแสดงอาการประหลาดใจกับรสของไวน์ถังที่ 6 นี้เป็นพิเศษจึงหันมาอธิบายว่าองุ่นที่ใช้ในการทำไวน์ถังนี้ปลูกที่ซอนเนนแบร์ก และแร่ธาตุในดินทรายร่วนหรือดินลมหอบของไร่นั้นเองที่ส่งผลให้องุ่นมีรสชาติเป็นเอกลักษณ์ ผมฟังไปก็จิบไปด้วยและหั่นเนื้อวากิวเอ 3 เข้าปากด้วย แขกในงานท่านอื่นคิดอย่างไรผมไม่รู้แต่สำหรับผมคือลงตัวมากๆ เพราะขณะที่เขียนบทความนี้ก็ยังจำรสชาติได้อย่างชัดเจนแม้เวลาจะผ่านมาแล้วหนึ่งเดือนพอดี และตัวสุดท้ายที่ชอบคือ Barrel Nine ซึ่งเก็บกู้ได้ที่บ๊าดนอยนาร์-อาร์ไวลอร์ ซึ่งได้รับการรีวิวโดยคุณคาโร เมาเรอ Master of Wine หญิงคนแรกจากประเทศที่พูดภาษาเยอรมันของ Institute of Masters of Wine แห่งสหราชอาณาจักรว่า “a hedonistic wine designed for the long haul”
สำหรับใครที่อยากลองไวน์ของ Meyer-Näkel แล้ว ผมขอแนะนำว่าง่ายสุดเลยคือไป Sühring ครับเพราะว่าเขามีไวน์แบรนด์นี้อยู่หลายตัว แม้จะยังไม่มีไวน์จากไลน์ Lost Barrels นี้ก็ตาม คุณผู้อ่านลองโทรเช็คอีกทีก็แล้วกันเพราะว่าเวลาผ่านไปเดือนหนึ่งแล้ว อาจจะมีอะไรอัพเดทใหม่แล้วก็ได้

As a hard liquor person and a journalist operating in a country with encompassing alcohol promotion control, I am always apprehensive when asked to join a wine tasting event whenever there is one. In fact, I decline about 90% of such invitations, but I recently agreed to one because I was intrigued by the name “Lost Barrels”. I was sure it was going to involve a nice storytelling, and that it was going to provide a much-needed escape from my December work routine, even if only for one evening.
Lost Barrels refers to nine barrels of vintage 2020 Pinot Noir produced by Meyer-Näkel in the Ahr region of Germany. The winery suffered significant damage from the devastating flood of July 2021, which wiped out everything in its path, including their cellar, carrying away their precious production. As the floodwaters receded, neighbors and even competing winemakers showed kindness by returning the vintage 2020 barrels they discovered by chance. Only nine of these barrels remained intact enough to guarantee the quality of the contents, which were subsequently bottled for sale. Each wine offers a total of 280 bottles.
Founded in 1950, Meyer-Näkel is currently managed by third-generation owners: Dörte and Meike Näkel. The sisters selected Bangkok as their Southeast Asian stop on their world tour to promote Lost Barrels and the Meyer-Näkel brand. Chefs Thomas and Mathias Sühring were tasked with creating fine dishes to pair with not just some, but all nine Lost Barrels wines, much to the delight of the invited wine importers and journalists who had the pleasure to experience the exclusivity.
Throughout the dinner, the star products were served in three trios. One out of each trio left a lasting impression on this non-wine person. Fragrant with a hint of paprika, I enjoyed Barrel Two (found in Dernau) with the appetizer of duck liver and smoked eel. Barrel Six (found in Walporzheim) was as distinctive as it was polished. Meike who was seated next to me at the dinner table explained that the character was given by the loess soils of Sonnenberg where the grapes were grown. I took the liberty of pairing it with the A3 Wagyu beef, served with charred leek – the combination remains memorable on my palate even after one month from the dinner. Then there was Barrel Nine (found in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler), described as “a hedonistic wine designed for the long haul” by Caro Maurer, the first lady from a German-speaking country to have passed the Master of Wine exam of the Institute of Masters of Wine in the United Kingdom.
For those interested in Meyer-Näkel wines, the easiest way to try one is to enjoy a delightful meal at Sühring, as they carry some varieties from this winery. However, as of December 2023, they did not have any of these Lost Barrels wines. Please call ahead to check if this has changed, or simply go anyway because we all need an excuse to visit Sühring every once in a while.
