สุดสัปดาห์ที่เหล่า “ศิษย์” และ “ครู” มารวมตัวกันเพื่อเฉลิมฉลองงานศิลป์

Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative ที่ก่อตั้งในปี 2002 คือโครงการระหว่างประเทศที่ดำเนินการเสาะหาศิลปินหนุ่มสาวผู้มีพรสวรรค์จากทั่วโลก โดยจะจับคู่ศิลปินกลุ่มนี้กับศิลปินชั้นครูในสาขาเดียวกันเพื่อให้เกิดการชี้แนะและร่วมมือกันสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน ในโอกาสแห่งการเฉลิมฉลอง ศิลปินชื่อดังและผู้นำด้านศิลปะกว่า 200 คนจะมารวมตัวกันที่โรงละครแบกซ์เตอร์ในเมืองเคปทาวน์ของแอฟริกาใต้ ในวันที่ 8 และ 9 กุมภาพันธ์เพื่อร่วมงาน Rolex Arts Weekend
“โรงละครแบกซ์เตอร์คือสถานที่จัดงาน Rolex Arts Weekend ที่เหมาะสมที่สุด” รีเบ็กกา เออร์วิน หัวหน้าโครงการ Rolex Arts Initiative บอก “นอกจากจะมีชื่อในเรื่องของการเป็นสถานที่จัดแสดงผลงานอันหลากหลาย ที่นี่ยังบริหารโดยซีอีโอและผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายศิลป์อย่าง ลารา ฟุต ซึ่งเคยเป็นศิษย์ของเซอร์ปีเตอร์ ฮอลล์ ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ด้านการละครในโครงการ [Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative] รุ่นปี 2004-2005 ด้วย”
กิจกรรมในงาน Rolex Arts Weekend ซึ่งจะจัดขึ้นเป็นเวลาสองวัน มีทั้งการเสวนา การอ่าน นิทรรศการ การแสดง และการแสดงรอบปฐมทัศน์ครั้งแรกของโลกอีกสองชุด กิจกรรมเหล่านี้จะเน้นที่ผลงานของศิษย์และครูในโครงการ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative รุ่นปี 2018-2019 ที่คัดเลือกโดยฟรูซินา เซป ซึ่งยังทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้เสนอชื่อศิษย์สำหรับโครงการรุ่นนี้ด้วย
กิจกรรมที่ถือเป็นไฮไลต์หนึ่งของงานคือการเปิดการแสดงรอบปฐมทัศน์ครั้งแรกของโลก โดย คูเดีย ตูเร ศิลปินนักเต้นชาวเซเนกัลซึ่งได้รับการชี้แนะโดยคริสตัล ไพต์ นักออกแบบท่าเต้นชาวแคนาดา เธอจะทำการแสดงชื่อ When the Night Comes–ผลงานที่ผสมผสานฮิปฮอปกับการเต้นหลากหลายสไตล์–ร่วมกับศิลปินนักเต้นจากสถาบัน Compagnie La Mer Noire อีก 3 คน
มาเรียม คามารา ศิษย์ในสาขาสถาปัตยกรรมจากไนเจอร์ และเซอร์เดวิด แอดจาเย่ ครูผู้เป็นสถาปนิกชาวอังกฤษซึ่งเกิดในกานาจะนำเสนอแบบก่อสร้างศูนย์วัฒนธรรมในเมืองนีอาเมย์ของไนเจอร์ จากนั้นก็จะมีการเปิดนิทรรศการ “Public realm along the Niger River, Niamey” อย่างเป็นทางการ
ในสาขาวรรณกรรม โคลิน บาร์เรตต์ ที่มีโคลม์ ทัวบิน เพื่อนร่วมชาติชาวไอริชเป็นผู้ชี้แนะ ได้แต่งนวนิยายเรื่อง The English Brothers เสร็จสิ้นแล้ว และจะมีการนำเนื้อหาส่วนหนึ่งจากนวนิยายเรื่องนี้มาดัดแปลงเป็นการแสดงโดยนักแสดงซึ่งเป็นคนท้องถิ่น แล้วต่อด้วยการอภิปรายในหัวข้อ “What Can be Said: Home and Voice” โดยศิษย์และครู
มาร์คัส กิลมอร์ ศิษย์ในสาขาดนตรีและมือกลองจากสหรัฐฯ ที่มีซาคีร ฮุสเซน นักดนตรีชาวอินเดียเป็นผู้ชี้แนะ จะนำบทประพันธ์เพลง Pulse มาเปิดการแสดงรอบปฐมทัศน์ครั้งแรกของโลก โดยมีนักดนตรีจากวงดุริยางค์ฟีลฮาร์โมนิกเคปทาวน์และแบรนดอน ฟิลลิปส์ วาทยกรประจำวงมาร่วมแจม
ผู้ที่มาร่วมกิจกรรมยังจะมีโอกาสได้เข้าฟังการประชุมสัมมนาทางศิลปะในหัวข้อ “Sister-Arts and Other Muses: Influences and Confluences in the Making of Art” และหัวข้อ “Against the Grain: The Arts in Times of Polarization” นำโดยศาสตราจารย์โฮมิ ภาภา จากมหาวิทยาฮาร์วาร์ดทั้งสองหัวข้อ นอกจากนี้ยังมีการจัดกิจกรรมฉายภาพยนตร์ที่โกลเดนแอร์โรว์สตูดิโอของโรงละครแบกซ์เตอร์ ซึ่งจะมีภาพยนตร์ในโครงการ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative รวมถึงการปรากฏตัวของศิษย์และครูทั้งในอดีตและปัจจุบัน

Mentors and protégés gather for a celebration of the arts

Founded in 2002, the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative is an international programme that seeks gifted young artists from all over the world. The artists are paired with masters in their discipline for a period of mentoring and creative collaboration. In celebration of this, over 200 renowned artists and art leaders will gather in Cape Town, South Africa at the Baxter Theatre Centre on 8 and 9 February to attend the Rolex Arts Weekend.
“The Baxter is a most appropriate venue for the Arts Weekend,” said Rebecca Irvin, Head of the Rolex Arts Initiative. “Not only is it known for presenting a variety of progressive works, it is led by CEO and Artistic Director Lara Foot, herself a former protégée of the theatre great Sir Peter Hall in the [Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative] 2004−2005 series.”
Taking place over two days, the Arts Weekend includes public events with talks, readings, exhibits, performances, and two world premieres. These events will feature the works of 2018-2019 protégés of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative and their mentors, curated by Fruzsina Szép, who has also served as an Arts Initiative nominator to identify protégés for the programme in 2018−2019.
Highlights of the art weekend include an opening world premiere by Senegalese dancer Khoudia Touré who has been mentored by Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite. Along with three members of the dance company, Compagnie La Mer Noire she will perform When the Night Comes, a piece that infuses hip-hop with various dance styles.
Architecture protégée Mariam Kamara of Niger, and her mentor the Ghanaian-born British architect Sir David Adjaye will present plans for a cultural centre in Niamey, Niger. This will be followed by the official opening of the exhibition “Public realm along the Niger River, Niamey”.
In Literature, Colin Barrett under the mentorship of fellow Irishman Colm Tóibín has completed The English Brothers, his debut novel. Local actors will perform an adapted excerpt from the book, followed by a discussion between the mentor and protégé titled “What Can be Said: Home and Voice”.
Music protégé and drummer Marcus Gilmore from the United States under the tutelage of Indian musician Zakir Hussain will perform the world premiere of his composition, Pulse. Gilmore will be joined by musicians from the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and its conductor Brandon Phillips.
Those who attend the event will also have the opportunity to sit in two Arts Symposiums titled “Sister-Arts and Other Muses: Influences and Confluences in the Making of Art” and “Against the Grain: The Arts in Times of Polarization”. Both events will be led by Prof. Homi Bhabha of Harvard University. In addition to all this an Arts Weekend Cinema event will be held at the Baxter’s Golden Arrow Studio, where films on the Rolex Arts Initiative, as well as past and current mentors and protégés will be shown to the public.
