For nearly a century, Rolex has supported individuals and organizations harnessing science and technology to solve the Earth’s environmental challenges, backing their explorations and adventures in places with extreme climates or even deep down under the ocean’s surface. From supporting pioneering explorers pushing back the boundaries of human endeavor, however, the company has shifted its commitment to supporting conservation and sustainability efforts to help secure the future of posterity.
The Perpetual Planet initiative, launched in 2019 by Rolex in partnership with National Geographic, supports individuals and organizations undertaking environmental research and exploration, or the study, conservation and rehabilitation of nature and environment with the goal to safeguard the world for a better future. One of the projects supported by Perpetual Planet is Coral Gardeners, a collective of coral growers in French Polynesia.
Coral Gardeners CEO and Founder Titouan Bernicot is a 21-year-old Frenchman who grew up on a small atoll in the Pacific, where his parents cultivated Taihitian pearls. For young Titouan and friends, the sea and coral reefs were their playground. In 2015, Titouan, aged 16 years, noticed that something strange was happening to the sea and reefs he loved. Spurred by a desire to help ensure the sustainability of coral reefs, he founded Coral Gardeners in 2017 with the aim to save the world’s coral reefs through active restoration, awareness activities and innovation. The group also seeks to explore the various ways that technology can help with conservation efforts. Coral Gardeners’ work has drawn recognition and support from various entities, including Perpetual Planet, which began to support the collective in 2022.
Working with advice from scientists and experts on reef restoration methods, these coral growers clip fragments from coral to cultivate in coral nurseries over 12-18 months before gluing them back onto nearby reefs using a material called marine cement. As colors and life return to the once-bleached, now-reestablished reefs, it’s clear that their efforts and dedication have not been wasted. Today, Coral Gardeners have surpassed their initial goal of 30,000 corals planted and currently have about 10,000 corals growing underwater in six nursery sites across French Polynesia.
Titouan Bernicot has a vision to harness the potential of computer technology, underwater cameras, 3D mapping and AI to better and more accurately analyze, observe and monitor the growth of the corals he and his team have planted. These high-tech aids will allow Coral Gardeners to expand their restoration efforts to coral reefs around the world. Currently they have their sights set on the islands of Fiji.
