Rolex จัดงานเทศกาลฉลอง 20 ปีโครงการ Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative ณ กรุงเอเธนส์

เมื่อปลายเดือนพฤษภาคมที่ผ่านมา Rolex เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดงาน Rolex Arts Festival ณ กรุงเอเธนส์ ประเทศกรีซ เพื่อฉลองครบรอบ 20 ปี โครงการ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative และเนื่องจากเป็นโอกาสสำคัญ เจ้าภาพจึงจัดกิจกรรมร่วมกับสถาบันศิลปวัฒนธรรมชั้นนำของกรีซเป็นการโหมโรง 4 วันเต็ม ก่อนเปิดเทศกาลอย่างเป็นทางการด้วยงานกาล่าในวันที่ 26 พฤษภาคม ซึ่งมีคนเด่นคนดังในแวดวงศิลปวัฒนธรรมของโลกมาร่วมงานอย่างคับคั่ง รวมทั้งผู้ที่เคยมีบทบาทในโครงการนี้ในฐานะที่ปรึกษา (mentor) หรือศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ (protégé) ในรอบ 20 ปีที่ผ่านมา
รีเบคกา เออร์วิน ผู้รับผิดชอบโครงการ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative กล่าวว่า “Rolex เปิดตัวโครงการนี้เมื่อปี 2002 โดยมีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อถ่ายทอดศิลปะระดับสุดยอดจากรุ่นสุ่รุ่น ด้วยการส่งเสริมชี้แนะแนวทาง ซึ่งเป็นวิธีที่สืบทอดกันมายาวนาน เราจัดงานครั้งนี้ขึ้นที่กรุงเอเธนส์ เพื่อให้ประชาคมผู้มีส่วนร่วมใน Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative ได้มาพบปะสังสรรค์และคิดทบทวนถึงสิ่งที่เราได้ร่วมแรงร่วมใจกันทำ และเพื่อจะแชร์ความสำเร็จเหล่านี้กับสาธารณชนด้วยค่ะ”
งานเทศกาล Rolex Arts Festival นำเสนอผลงานความสำเร็จทั้ง 7 แขนงของ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative ได้แก่ สถาปัตยกรรม ดนตรี นาฏศิลป์ ภาพยนตร์ วรรณศิลป์ การละคร และทัศนศิลป์ โดยโครงการนี้เปิดโอกาสให้ศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ได้พบปะรับคำปรึกษาจากยอดฝีมือในสาขาของแต่ละคน ช่วยให้ศิลปินรุ่นใหม่บรรลุศักยภาพของตนเอง และก้าวไปเป็นผู้นำในวงการศิลปะอย่างเต็มตัว นับถึงวันนี้มีศิลปินผู้มีชื่อเสียงเข้ามารับหน้าที่พี่เลี้ยง/ที่ปรึกษาแล้ว 63 ท่าน ซึ่งแต่ละท่านก็เคยได้รับรางวัลเกียรติยศจากหลายเวที รวมๆ แล้วเกือบครบทุกรางวัลที่มีการมอบกันในโลกของเรา ตั้งแต่รางวัลโนเบลไปจนถึงรางวัลออสการ์เลยทีเดียว ที่ปรึกษาทั้ง 63 ท่านได้ทำหน้าที่พี่เลี้ยงให้กับศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ 63 คน จาก 41 ประเทศ และศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ (ชื่อตำแหน่งอย่างเป็นทางการคือ Rolex Arts Fellow) หลายๆ คนก็จับมือร่วมทำผลงานกับเพื่อนศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ที่ได้รู้จักผ่านโครงการด้วย
ตลอด 7 วันของการจัดงาน มีการนำเสนอผลงานของเฟลโลว์ทั้ง 7 สาขา ผ่านกิจกรรมต่างๆ เช่น การบรรยาย การแสดง นิทรรศการ ฯลฯ รวมทั้งสิ้น 30 กิจกรรม
การนำเสนอผลงานสาขาสถาปัตยกรรม อยู่ในรูปของนิทรรศการร่วม โดยเฟลโลว์ทั้ง 5 คน คือ ซาเฮล อัลฮียารี, กลอเรีย คาบราล, มาเรียม อิสซูฟู คามารา, ไซมอน เครทซ์ และหยาง เจ้า เลือกผลงานของตัวเองมาให้เพื่อนๆ ร่วมออกความเห็น ส่วนสาขานาฏศิลป์นั้น คูเดีย ทูเร นำผลงานล่าสุดของเธอที่ชื่อ ÓRÓ ออกเปิดตัว โดยมีศิลปินชาวกรีกร่วมแสดง ส่วนเฟลโลวอีก 2 คน คือเอดัวโด ฟูกูชิมะ และ ไมล์ส แธทเชอร์ เลือกนำผลงานที่ผ่านมาของตนเองมาโชว์ สาขาการละครเสนอการแสดงสดโดยวิทนีย์ ไวท์ ซึ่งนำคำประพันธ์ของวิลเลียม เชคสเปียร์มาผสานกับบทประพันธ์และบทเพลงที่เธอแต่งขึ้น ตามมาด้วยการแสดงของเซบาสเตียน โซลอร์ซาโน โรดริเกซ ที่ใช้เพียงแสง เงา และเสียงลมหายใจของตัวเองในการสร้างผลงาน
ผลงานสาขาทัศนศิลป์มีให้ชมอย่างจุใจในนิทรรศการ 20 Years of Mentoring ที่นำเสนอผลงานล่าสุดของเฟลโลว์ทั้ง 8 คน คือ แซมมี บาโลฮี, อเลฮานโดร เซซาร์โก, มาซาโนรี ฮานดา, นิโคลาส โลโบ, มาทีโอ โลเปซ, เถา เวียน ฟาน, คามาลิ โรดริเกซ และ มัทไทอาส ไวส์เชอร์ ส่วนผลงานสาขาภาพยนตร์นั้นจัดฉายกลางแจ้ง โดยมีผู้กำกับ มิรา แนร์ ซึ่งเคยทำหน้าที่พี่เลี้ยงในโครงการเป็นผู้ดำเนินรายการ สำหรับผลงานที่นำมาฉายก็มีทั้งหนังสั้นและบางฉากจากหนังขนาดยาวโดยศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ในโครงการทั้ง 7 คน คือ ไคล์ เบล, แอนมารี จาซีร์, โฮซูเอ เมนเดซ, เซลินา เมอร์กา, อากุสตินา ซาน มาร์ติน, ทอม โชวาล และ ไชทานยา ทามฮาเน
ผลงานสาขาวรรณศิลป์นำเสนอผ่านโครงการวรรณกรรมดิจิตอล A Word in Your Ear ที่ Fellows ทั้ง 8 คน คือ นาโอมิ อัลเดอร์แมน, อันโตนิโอ การ์เซีย แองเจล, เอเดม อาวูเมย์, คอลิน บารเรทท์, จูเลียน ฟูกส์, จูเลีย เลฮ์, มิโรสลาฟ เปนคอฟ และ เทรซี เค สมิธ มอบงานเขียนให้จัดทำเป็นหนังสือเสียงภาษาอังกฤษและภาษากรีกสำหรับดาวน์โหลดฟรี โดยผู้ที่มาให้เสียงล้วนแต่เป็นนักแสดงมีชื่อทั้งสิ้น
ที่น่าประทับใจไม่แพ้กันคือการแสดงผลงานสาขาดนตรี ซึ่งศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ พอชิ ซาซากิ นำผลงานล่าสุด ARTEMIS: Fountain ที่เธอทำให้กับ Rolex Arts Festival โดยเฉพาะ ออกแสดงเป็นครั้งแรก ร่วมกับสมาชิกวงประสานเสียง CHÓRES ของประเทศกรีซ 30 คน ส่วนศิลปินรุ่นใหม่สาขาดนตรีอีกคน คือ เบน ฟรอสท์ เสนอผลงานแนวซาวด์อินสตอเลชั่นที่หอแสดงดนตรี Alexandra Trianti โดยใช้ลำโพงที่ติดตั้งไว้เหนือศีรษะกว่า 30 ตัว สร้างซาวด์สเคปที่เปลี่ยนแปรอยู่ตลอดเวลา และที่มาทีหลังแต่ดังไม่แพ้รายการใดก็คือคอนเสิร์ตปิดเทศกาล ที่สามศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ ดินา เอลเวดีดี, ออเรลิโอ มาร์ติเนซ และ มาร์คัส กิลมอร์ ขึ้นเวทีแสดงร่วมกับ จิลแบร์โต จิล นักร้องนักแต่งเพลงระดับตำนานชาวบราซิล ซึ่งเป็นพี่เลี้ยงของเอลเวดีดี
Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการทำงานอนุรักษ์และสืบสานมรดกทางศิลปะของโลกภายใต้โครงการ Rolex Perpetual Arts ที่ดำเนินมากว่าครึ่งศตวรรษ และสะท้อนถึงแนวทางการสืบทอดทักษะฝีมือด้านการประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นมากว่าร้อยปี เพื่อส่งต่อองค์ความรู้ทั้งหมดที่คนรุ่นก่อนสั่งสมมาให้คนรุ่นใหม่ได้สืบสานและพัฒนาต่อไป ปรัชญาการอนุรักษ์และสืบสานนี้ไม่ได้จำกัดอยู่แต่ในด้านศิลปวัฒนธรรม แต่ยังครอบคลุมไปถึงการส่งเสริมการกีฬา การสำรวจ และการสนับสนุนผู้ที่มุ่งพัฒนาวิธีแก้ปัญหาด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมของโลกอีกด้วย

For a full week in late May, the Rolex Arts Festival unfolded in Athens to commemorate an important milestone for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. A star-studded gala ceremony on May 26 marked the official beginning of the festival, bringing together a who’s who of global arts and culture, many of whom have taken part in the initiative either as a mentor or as a protégé.
“Rolex inaugurated this initiative in 2002 with the goal of transmitting artistry at the highest level from one generation to the next through the time-honored tradition of personal encouragement and guidance,” said Rebecca Irvin, head of Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. “We have created this occasion in Athens to convene a joyful reunion of the mentoring program community, reflect on what we have done together and share these achievements with the public.”
The festival showcased the achievements of the mentoring program, which spans the fields of architecture, music, dance, film, literature, theater and visual arts. By offering up-and-coming artists the opportunity to engage one-on-one with masters in their field, the program helps them to realize their potential and become artistic leaders in their own right. To date, 63 world-renowned artists – recipients of virtually every major honor from the Nobel Prize to the Academy Award – have served as mentors and have chosen 63 protégés from 41 countries. Many of the protégés (now called Rolex Arts Fellows) have gone on to launch collaborative works with fellows from other fields whom they have met through the program.
The festival featured a total of 30 public and private events. The architecture showcase took the form of a collaborative exhibition by all five architecture fellows, Sahel Alhiyari, Gloria Cabral, Mariam Issoufou Kamara, Simon Kretz and Yang Zhao, who commented on each other’s chosen building and project. Dance fellow Khoudia Touré debuted her latest work, ÓRÓ, with the participation of local artists, while two other fellows, Eduardo Fukushima and Myles Thatcher presented a double bill of recent work. Theatre presentations included a performance by Whitney White, who combined the words of William Shakespeare with her own text and music, and a live performance of Sebastián Solórzano Rodríguez’s work using only light, shadow and the sound of his breath.
The “20 Years of Mentoring” exhibition presented the recent works of visual arts fellows Sammy Baloji, Alejandro Cesarco, Masanori Handa, Nicholas Hlobo, Mateo López, Thao Nguyen Phan, Camila Rodríguez Triana and Matthias Weischer. The film portion of the festival took the form of an outdoor screening hosted by former mentor Mira Nair and featuring the works of fellows Kyle Belle, Annemarie Jacir, Josué Méndez, Celina Murga, Agustina San Martín, Tom Shoval and Chaitanya Tamhane.
The digital literature project “A Word in Your Ear”showcased the work of all eight literature fellows: Naomi Alderman, Antonio García Ángel, Edem Awumey, Colin Barrett, Julián Fuks, Julia Leigh, Miroslav Penkov and Tracy K. Smith. Their writings were available for free download, performed in English and Greek by noted actors.
The music showcase was no less impressive. Fellow Pauchi Sasaki debuted her work ARTEMIS: Fountain, a Rolex Arts Festival commission, joined by 30 members of the Greek choir CHÓRES. Another music fellow, Ben Frost presented a site-specific sound installation at Alexandra Trianti Hall, a shifting soundscape achieved with more than 30 speakers suspended overhead. At the festival’s closing concert, fellows Dina Elwedidi, Aurelio Martínez and Marcus Gilmore were joined onstage by legendary singer-songwriter and Dina’s Rolex mentor Gilberto Gil.
Part of the Rolex Perpetual Arts Initiative launched over half a century ago, the Mentor and Protégé program helps ensure the perpetuation of the world’s artistic heritage and reflects the fact that for more than 100 years Rolex has passed its skills from one generation of watchmakers to the next, each receiving the combined knowledge of all who came before. And this philosophy of perpetuation is not confined to arts and culture but extends to sport, exploration and support for those who are devising solutions to preserve the planet as well.
