We analyse this year’s Oscars—one of the world’s most anticipated events—for the good, the bad and the changes.

The only thing more sought after than an Oscar itself are the ratings.
This year’s 81st Academy Awards was a hard gamble for the organisers. After all, it was the first time in 30 years that the award show went without a host. Kevin Hart was set to take the mantle this year, but stepped down over the controversy with his homophonic tweets. In the end, the organisers choose to go on without a replacement. The gamble also extended to the nature of TV shows, which have been on a decline as the number of people watching has decreased over the years.
This year’s event was held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Surprisingly, ABC mentioned that the event not only escaped disaster, but it exceeded expectations. Everyone was happy, as the organisers, guest and viewers generally said it was the best Oscars event in many years. There were several key moments throughout the live broadcast that lasted 3 hours and 23 minutes, making this one of the most ‘compact’ Oscars, as every event in the past 7 years extended over 4 hours long.
After the show, the Nielsen survey revealed that this year’s broadcast rating was 7.7. For audiences aged 18-49, viewership increased 10% from the previous year. The number of viewers also increased by 11.5%, that is 29.6 million viewers—a nice jump from 26.5 million in 2018.
If you consider that the Oscar’s ratings have continuously fallen over the past 3-4 years, viewership seems to be on a decline for all major entertainment award shows like the Golden Globes and Grammys. The slight increase in ratings at the Oscars this year is a good sign for organisers. Having no host seemed to be no problem at all, as there were engaging shows like the opener featuring Adam Lambert and Queen, as well as the impressive duet from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for Shallow, the soundtrack for their movie A Star is Born.
Another obvious difference was how everyone worked to keep their speeches concise as directed by the organisers. Winners are given 90 seconds to speak, and if they go overtime, the microphone and spotlight was switched off immediately and without mercy. The makeup team from Vice, who won for Best Hair and Makeup, experienced this firsthand, and it was something of a warning to other recipients.
Interesting new pairs of award announcers were also chosen, such as Jason Momoa and Helen Mirren or Christ Evans and Jennifer Lopez who all kept up with the shorter pace. The announcements ended on a high note with the beautiful Julia Roberts who who gave the best picture award to Green Book.
The larger audience this year could also be due to the diverse selection of finalists. This year, several blockbuster movies were in the runnings including Black Panther, BlackkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Roma , A Star is Born and Vice. The selection itself had representations of people of various ages and ethnicities including teens, LGBTQ and African Americans. In addition, all 7 movies (excluding Roma which was shown on Netflix) have a combined income of 1,300 million in the United States, making them some of the most generally popular movies to be selected. In itself, this removes the need for a “most popular movie” award which was proposed in earlier Oscars to increase ratings. It was a proposal frowned upon by critics who deemed that to be in ill taste and repetitive. The critics are likely correct, as seen in this show where Bohemian Rhapsody won 4 awards and A Star is Born won 1 prize have already left theatres but remain popular in media.
In the end, it seems the heart of the Oscars is not in funny jokes from an emcee, or the long ceremonies… what the audience is looking for is to experience things as they occur naturally. This is the true charm of the Oscars that hasn’t been seen for many years.

ลุ้นกันยิ่งกว่าผลรางวัล ก็คือตัวเลขเรตติ้งและจำนวนคนดู เนื่องจากงานประกาศรางวัลออสการ์ ครั้งที่ 91 ปีนี้ เดิมพันด้วยชีวิตผู้จัดเลยทีเดียว ไหนต้องแบกรับความเสี่ยงที่งานอาจจะออกมาเละเทะเพราะตัดสินใจไม่มีพิธีกรครั้งแรกในรอบ 30 ปี หลังจากที่ Kevin Hart พิธีกรที่ถูกวางตัวไว้เกิดไปมีปัญหาส่วนตัวทวีตข้อความรังเกียจเหยียดเพศที่3จนต้องถอนตัวออกไป และผู้จัดงานก็ไม่ได้หาคนอื่นมาแทน นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นบ่วงกรรมของคนทำทีวี ที่ยังต้องต่อสู้กับพฤติกรรมคนดูต่อไป เมื่อตัวเลขคนนั่งเฝ้าหน้าจอจริงๆลดลงไปเรื่อยๆในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมา
งานปีนี้จัดขึ้นที่ Dolby Theatre ในลอสแองเจลิส ถ่ายทอดสดทางช่อง ABC ปรากฏว่า นอกจากงานไม่พังแล้วยังปังเกินความคาดหมาย ปีนี้จบงานทุกคนแฮปปี้ ทั้งผู้จัดงาน ผู้ร่วมงาน และคนดู หลายคนพูดเป็นเสียงเดียวกันว่า เป็นงานประกาศรางวัลออสการ์ที่ดีที่สุดในรอบหลายปี มีโมเม้นท์ดีๆน่าประทับใจเกิดขึ้นมากมาย ตลอดเวลาถ่ายทอดสด 3 ชั่วโมงกับอีก 23 นาที เป็นออสการ์ที่กระชับ กินเวลาน้อยที่สุดในรอบ 7 ปี (ปีที่แล้วใช้เวลา 4 ชั่วโมง)
หลังจบงานบริษัทสำรวจเรตติ้ง Nielsen เปิดเผยว่า ปีนี้เรตติ้งอยู่ที่ตัวเลข 7.7 สำหรับกลุ่มผู้ชมอายุ 18-49 ปี นับว่าเพิ่มขึ้น 10% จากปีก่อน ส่วนจำนวนผู้ชมเพิ่มขึ้น 11.5% มาอยู่ที่ 29.6 ล้านคน จากตัวเลข 26.5 ล้านคนในปี 2018
หากมองย้อนไปเรตติ้งออสการ์ร่วงลงอย่างต่อเนื่อง 3-4 ปี สภาพไม่ต่างจากงานประกาศรางวัลเพลงและภาพยนตร์อื่นๆอย่างลูกโลกทองคำ และแกรมมี่อวอร์ดส์ แม้ว่าเรตติ้งออสการ์ปีนี้จะเพิ่มขึ้นมาเล็กน้อยและยังเป็นตัวเลขที่ไม่มากนัก แต่ก็เป็นสัญญาณดีๆบางอย่างของผู้จัดงานว่า การไม่มีพิธีกรนั้นไม่ใช่ปัญหาแต่อย่างใด หากมีการแสดงที่ตราตรึงคนดูไว้ได้ อย่างโชว์เปิดของ Adam Lambert กับวง Queen และโชว์คั่นรายการสุดประทับใจของ Lady Gaga กับ Bradley Cooper ในเพลง Shallow เพลงประกอบภาพยนตร์เรื่อง A Star is Born

การจับคู่ผู้เชิญรางวัลบนเวทีที่ก็ดูแปลกใหม่น่าสนใจอย่างคู่ของ Jason Momoa กับ Helen Mirren คู่ของChris Evans กับ Jennifer Lopezเมื่อขึ้นมาบนเวทีแล้วก็ไม่กล่าวท้าวความยาว เพื่อที่จะจบลงด้วยการปล่อยมุกเวิ่นเว้อ ทุกอย่างดำเนินไปอย่างเรียบง่าย และครบถ้วน ปิดท้ายอย่างสวยงามด้วย Julia Roberts ที่มาประกาศรางวัล ภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยมซึ่งได้แก่ Greenbook และกล่าวสรุปลารายการไปอย่างเรียบง่าย
ที่ดึงดูดผู้ชมอย่างมากในปีนี้ และมีส่วนสำคัญที่ทำให้รางวัลออสการ์กลับมาอยู่ในความสนใจและติดตามของผู้คน คือความฉลาดในการคัดเลือกภาพยนตร์ที่เข้าชิงรางวัลใหญ่ ซึ่งปีนี้รางวัลภาพยนตร์ยอดเยี่ยมได้เข้าชิงทั้งหมด 8 เรื่อง ได้แก่ Black Panther, BlackkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Roma , A Star is Born และ Viceนอกจากจะเติมเต็มทุกความต้องการของสังคม ตั้งแต่กลุ่มวัยรุ่น สตรี เกย์ และคนดำแล้ว ส่วนใหญ่เป็นหนังที่ประสบความสำเร็จด้านรายได้ ระดับ Top Box Office ทั้งนั้น และทั้ง 7 เรื่อง (ไม่รวม Roma ที่เป็นของ Netflix) มีรายได้ในสหรัฐรวมกัน ไม่ต่ำกว่า 1,300 ล้านเหรียญ ทำให้ผู้จัดงานไม่มีความจำเป็นต้องเพิ่มรางวัลสาขาภาพยนตร์ยอดนิยมขึ้นมาเพิ่มเรตติ้ง ตามที่มีการเสนอขึ้นมาก่อนหน้านี้แล้วโดนบรรดานักวิจารณ์พากันสับเละว่าจะยิ่งทำให้งานพังและทำให้เกิดความซ้ำซ้อน จนถึงตอนนี้ก็น่าจะจริงเพราะหลายเรื่องอย่าง Bohemian Rhapsody ที่กวาดไป 4 รางวัลและ A Star is Born ที่คว้ามา 1 รางวัล แม้ออกโรงไปหลายเดือนแล้วก็ยังมีกระแสแรงอย่างต่อเนื่อง
หลังจบงานหลายคนก็เข้าใจแล้วว่า หัวใจของงานออสการ์ไม่ได้อยู่ที่การปั้นแต่งมุกตลกโดยพิธีกร ไม่ได้อยู่ที่พิธีการเว่อร์วัง แต่สิ่งที่คนดูต้องการสัมผัสคือสิ่งต่างๆในงานที่เกิดขึ้นเองตามธรรมชาติและเป็นเสน่ห์ที่แท้จริงของออสการ์ที่ผู้ชมไม่ได้เห็นมานานแล้ว
