ความจีรังยั่งยืนเป็นหนึ่งคุณค่าสำคัญที่ Rolex ยึดถือมาโดยตลอด ดังจะเห็นได้จากเรือนเวลาหลากรุ่นและกิจกรรมต่างๆ ที่ทางแบรนด์ให้การสนับสนุนเพื่อประโยชน์ของโลกและมนุษยชาติในภาพรวม อันเป็นการสะท้อนถึงความมุ่งมั่นในการกุศลของคุณฮานส์ วิลส์ดอร์ฟ ผู้ก่อตั้งแบรนด์ หนึ่งในโครงการดังกล่าวก็คือ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative ซึ่งมีวัตถุประสงค์สำคัญในการสนับสนุนให้มีการส่งต่อความรู้ในด้านศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมแขนงต่างๆ ไปยังคนรุ่นต่อไป
โครงการระดับโลกนี้เริ่มต้นขึ้นในปี 2002 โดยมีจุดประสงค์หลักคือการเฟ้นหาศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ที่มีพรสวรรค์ในสาขาต่างๆ เพื่อไปจับคู่กับศิลปินชั้นครูซึ่งจะทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้ฝึกสอนในกระบวนการความร่วมมือเพื่อการสร้างสรรค์ที่กินระยะเวลานานสองปี ด้วยความเชื่อว่าศิลปะเป็นประสบการณ์ที่สั่งสมกันมานานหลายชั่วอายุคน และเชื่อว่าศิลปินทุกคนนั้นล้วนแล้วแต่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากศิลปินผู้มาก่อนหน้าทั้งสิ้น ทั้งนี้ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative จะครอบคลุมสาขาความรู้ด้านต่างๆ อาทิ สถาปัตยกรรม นาฏศิลป์ ภาพยนตร์ วรรณกรรม ดนตรี การละครและทัศนศิลป์ แล้วยังจะมีสาขาศิลปะทั่วไปอีกหนึ่งสาขาสำหรับศิลปะหรือองค์ความรู้แบบสหวิทยาการด้วย
Rolex มีข้อกำหนดว่าศิลปินผู้เป็นอาจารย์และศิลปินผู้เป็นศิษย์จะต้องใช้เวลาทำงานร่วมกันอย่างน้อยหกสัปดาห์เป็นขั้นต่ำ แต่ทั้งสองจะเลือกได้ว่าจะพบกันที่เมืองใดและมีลักษณะการเรียนรู้หรือทำงานร่วมกันอย่างไร โดยปกติแล้วศิลปินผู้เป็นศิษย์จะริเริ่มโปรเจคของตนเองแล้วศิลปินผู้เป็นอาจารย์จะคอยให้คำชี้แนะและให้การสนับสนุน ผลสำเร็จที่เกิดขึ้นจะได้รับการนำเสนอภายในอีเวนท์ช่วงสุดสัปดาห์ที่ Rolex เป็นผู้สนับสนุนและเปิดให้ประชาชนทั่วไปเข้าชมได้ ที่ผ่านมามีศิลปินทำหน้าที่อาจารย์มาแล้ว 54 ท่าน และมีศิลปินผู้เป็นศิษย์จำนวน 54 ท่านเช่นเดียวกันจาก 36 ประเทศทั่วโลก
กระบวนการคัดสรรเริ่มต้นที่คณะกรรมการผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิอันประกอบด้วยศิลปินและผู้ที่คร่ำหวอดในสาขาต่างๆ คณะกรรมการนี้จะเปลี่ยนไปในทุกรอบของการจัดโครงการ และจะทำหน้าที่เสนอชื่อศิลปินระดับครูที่เหมาะสมสำหรับการทำหน้าที่อาจารย์ เมื่อศิลปินเหล่านั้นตกลงที่จะเข้าร่วมโครงการแล้ว Rolex จะขอให้ศิลปินเป็นผู้กำหนดเกณฑ์คุณสมบัติของศิษย์ตามที่ตนเองเห็นว่าเหมาะสม โครงการ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative ไม่เปิดรับการสมัครโดยตรงจากศิลปินรุ่นเยาว์ ทุกคนจะต้องมาจากการเสนอชื่อของคณะผู้เชี่ยวชาญในแต่ละสาขาซึ่งจะไม่รู้ว่าผู้เชี่ยวชาญคนอื่นในคณะนั้นประกอบด้วยใครบ้างจนสิ้นสุดกระบวนการ ในที่สุดก็จะได้ชื่อผู้เข้ารอบสุดท้ายจำนวนสามหรือสี่คนเพื่อให้ตัวศิลปินผู้เป็นอาจารย์ได้เลือกคนหนึ่งเป็นศิษย์ในโครงการนี้
นี่คือโอกาสดีระดับเปลี่ยนชีวิตได้สำหรับศิลปินรุ่นใหม่หลายๆ คน เพราะนอกจากที่จะได้บ่มเพาะความรู้ เปิดวิสัยทัศน์และเพิ่มความมั่นใจแล้วยังจะได้ขยายเครือข่ายบุคคลที่ตนรู้จักในวงการอีกด้วย สำหรับรอบปี 2018-2019 ที่ผ่านไปแล้วนั้น โครงการ Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative จะประกอบด้วยสาขาต่างๆ ได้แก่ สถาปัตยกรรม นาฏศิลป์ วรรณกรรมและดนตรี ดังนั้นในรอบปี 2020-2021 ก็จะเป็นคราวของสาขาภาพยนตร์ การละคร ทัศนศิลป์และสาขาศิลปะทั่วไปที่ได้กล่าวถึงข้างต้น
ศิลปินผู้เป็นอาจารย์ในสาขาภาพยนตร์คือ สไปค์ ลี หนึ่งในผู้ทรงอิทธิพลที่สุดในแวดวงนี้ด้วยผลงานภาพยนตร์และสารคดีชื่อดังกว่า 35 ชิ้นในสาขาต่างๆ ศิลปินผู้เป็นศิษย์ของเขาคือ คายล์ เบล ซึ่งมีเป้าหมายสำคัญในการบอกเล่าเรื่องราวที่เกี่ยวกับชาติพันธุ์อเมริกันพื้นเมือง เพื่อให้เสียงของชนชาติของเขาเป็นที่ได้ยินไปในวงกว้าง
ทางด้านสาขาการละครมีอาจารย์เป็น ฟิลลิดา ลอยด์ ซึ่งขึ้นชื่อเรื่องงานโปรดิวซ์ละครเวที โอเปร่า ละครเพลงและภาพยนตร์ที่ท้าทายและมีนวัตกรรม ผู้กำกับชาวอังกฤษผู้นี้ใช้เวลาส่วนมากในชีวิตการทำงานของเธอไปกับการส่งเสริมความเท่าเทียมระหว่างเพศทั้งบนเวทีและนอกเวที ศิษย์ของเธอ คือ วิทนีย์ ไวท์ ผู้ร่วมกำกับฝ่ายศิลป์แห่งคณะ Roundabout Theatre Company จากนิวยอร์ค ผลงานการกำกับของเธอที่คณะละครแห่งนี้ประกอบด้วยละครเวทีหลายหลากประเภทตั้งแต่คลาสสิกไปจนถึงร่วมสมัย
คู่อาจารย์และศิษย์ในสาขาทัศนศิลป์ คือ แครี่ เม วีมส์ และคามิลา โรดริเกซ ตรีอานา โดยวีมส์ผู้เป็นอาจารย์นั้นใช้ภาพ ตัวอักษร วิดีทัศน์และการแสดงเพื่อบอกเล่าเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับ การเหยียดเพศ การเหยียดเชื้อชาติและการแบ่งแยกชนชั้น ตลอดจนแนวคิดแบบเหมารวมต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเพศหญิง ทางฝั่งตรีอานาซึ่งเป็นทัศนศิลปินชาวโคลัมเบียนั้นก็ทุ่มเทให้กับการพูดถึงเรื่องราวที่คล้ายคลึงกันนี้ที่เกิดขึ้นในชีวิตประจำวันของผู้คนเช่นกัน
สำหรับสาขาศิลปะทั่วไปนั้น ลิน-มานูเอล มิแรนด้าจะใช้ประสบการณ์ของเขาในฐานะผู้ประพันธ์บทเพลง ผู้แต่งเนื้อร้องและนักแสดงที่ได้รับรางวัลพูลิตเซอร์ แกรมมี่ เอ็มมี่และโทนี่ ในการเปิดโลกทัศน์แห่งการสร้างสรรค์ของอากุสตินา ซาน มาร์ติน ซึ่งเพิ่งจะถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์เรื่อง To Kill the Beast เสร็จและได้รางวัล Special Mention Jury Prize for Best Short Film จากเทศกาลภาพยนตร์เมืองคานส์ครั้งที่ 72 จากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง Monster God ดังนั้นด้วยความเข้มข้นระดับนี้เราจึงมั่นใจเลยว่า Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative จะต้องน่าสนใจอย่างแน่นอน

Perpetuality is a constant theme at Rolex, and one which transcends their timepieces. Guided by the philanthropic spirit of founder Hans Wilsdorf, the Geneva-based watch manufacturer maintains a tradition of making this world a better place. One way of doing that is to assist with the transmission of knowledge in various artistic and cultural disciplines from one generation to the next – the main objective of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.
Established in 2002, this international programme identifies gifted young artists in different fields and pairs them with a master who would become their mentor for a creative collaboration lasting a period of two years. It does so with the beliefs that art is an accumulative of experiences built over generations, and that all artists are inspired by their predecessors. This one-to-one arrangement encompasses fields such as architecture, dance, film, literature, music, theatre and visual arts. As well, one open category mentorship is available for other fields of arts or an interdisciplinary pursuit.
The minimum mentoring period encouraged by Rolex is six weeks but most mentors and protégés spend more time working together. All pairs are free to determine the location and the nature of their interaction. Typically, the protégés would undertake a project of their own choosing and their mentors would provide the necessary advice and support. Their achievements are eventually promoted at a public weekend event sponsored by Rolex. Up till now, under this programme, 54 artists have served as mentors to 54 protégés from 36 countries.
Their process begins with an advisory board of distinguished artists and practitioners, which is replaced for each cycle, who nominate masters who suit the role of the mentors. Upon their agreement to take part, Rolex would work with them to define their criteria for a protégé. The Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative does not accept direct application from young artists. The protégés must be nominated by a panel of experts in each field who remain anonymous to one another throughout this process. Eventually, three or four finalists are chosen and the mentors themselves will be the one choosing their own protégé.
This can be a life-changing opportunity for many young talents. It is a time for them to deepen knowledge, broaden vision, increase confidence and expand network of connections. The 2018-2019 cycle of Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative involved architecture, dance, literature and music. Therefore, for the new cycle of 2020−2021, the programme will touch upon the fields of film, theatre, visual arts and the aforementioned open category.
Spike Lee, the film mentor, is one of the most influential filmmakers whose work spans genres with more than 35 feature films and documentaries. His protégé is filmmaker Kyle Bell who is committed to tell the stories of his Native American people, to make their voices heard.
For theatre, mentor Phyllida Lloyd is recognised for her bold and innovative theatre, opera, musical and film productions. The British director has spent most of her career promoting gender equality both on and off stage. Her protégé, Whitney White, is an Artistic Associate at New York’s Roundabout Theatre Company where she directed a variety of theatrical genres from the classics to the contemporaries.
Carrie Mae Weems and Camila Rodríguez Triana will collaborate in visual arts. Mentor uses image, text, film, video and performance to tackle the subjects of sexism, racism and class, as well as stereotypes of womanhood. Protégé Camila Rodríguez Triana is a Colombian visual artist. Like her mentor, she uses great emotional power to talk about similar themes that recur in everyday life.
Lastly, in the Open Category, Lin-Manuel Miranda will use his experience as Pulitzer Prize, Grammy, Emmy and Tony award-winning composer, lyricist and actor to serve as to nurture and broaden the creative universes of Agustina San Martín who has recently completed the feature film To Kill the Beast and won the Special Mention Jury Prize for Best Short Film at the 72nd Cannes Festival for Monster God. We have no doubt this will be yet another interesting cycle of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.
