หลายภาพ หลากมุม ของห้วงเวลาเดียวกันโดยช่างภาพบาร์บารา โพรสท์

ปกติผมจะได้รับนิตยสาร Le Monde d’Hermès ในฐานะสื่อมวลชน แต่ด้วยความที่สนใจติดตามเรื่องราวของ Hermès เป็นการส่วนตัวอยู่แล้ว ผมจึงรู้สึกพิเศษทุกครั้งที่เห็นซองของนิตยสารดังกล่าววางรออยู่บนโต๊ะที่ทำงาน และในฉบับ Autumn-Winter 2020 เมื่อปลายปีที่แล้วก็มีบทความหนึ่งที่ตีพิมพ์ภาพลักษณะคล้ายเป็นการพรีวิวนาฬิกา Hermès H08 ซึ่งมีแผนเปิดตัวในปีนี้ ท้ายบทความนั้นมีคำบรรยายเรื่องภาพสั้นๆ เพียงว่า “ภาพทั้งสี่นี้นำเสนอฉากเดียวกันจากหลากหลายมุม ทุกภาพถ่ายพร้อมกันเมื่อเวลา 10.08 น. พอดี”
ตอนนั้นผมรู้สึกว่าคอนเซปท์ดังกล่าวน่าสนใจมาก ผมดีใจที่ได้เห็นภาพอะไรที่เป็นของจริงบ้าง เพราะในอุตสาหกรรมนาฬิกานี้ก็ต้องยอมรับว่าหลายแบรนด์ใช้รูปเรนเดอร์จากคอมพิวเตอร์กันจนเป็นเรื่องปกติ แต่ผมก็ไม่มีเวลาหาข้อมูลต่อว่าเป็นรูปที่ใครถ่ายหรือไปถ่ายที่ใดอย่างไร
แต่แล้วด้วยความบังเอิญ ผมก็ได้ค้นพบจากแผ่นพับของ Hermès ช่วง Watches and Wonders Geneva 2021 ว่าภาพชุดนี้เป็นฝีมือการถ่ายของบาร์บารา โพรสท์ชาวเยอรมันที่ไปปักหลักเป็นศิลปินร่วมสมัยอยู่ที่นิวยอร์ค เทคนิคของเธอคือการใช้กล้องที่ควบคุมผ่านระบบคลื่นวิทยุหลายตัวไปวางไว้ในจุดต่างกันแล้วกดสั่งลั่นชัตเตอร์เพื่อเก็บหลากภาพ หลายมุม ของห้วงเวลาเดียวกัน ดูจากหลักการแล้วทำให้นึกถึงภาพยนตร์เรื่อง Vantage Point แต่นี่เป็นภาพนิ่งจึงเป็นการบันทึกเพียงเศษเสี้ยววินาทีเท่านั้น
ทางแบรนด์เองไม่ได้กล่าว แต่ผมจะผูกเรื่องให้ว่าปรัชญาที่ปรากฏในชุดภาพนี้สามารถนำไปโยงกับชื่อรุ่นของนาฬิกา Hermès H08 ได้ด้วย เพราะตัวเลข 0 นั้นหมายถึงความว่างเปล่า ในขณะที่ตัวเลข 8 เมื่อวางแบบตะแคงข้างจะเห็นไปเครื่องหมายอินฟินิตี้ ความย้อนแย้งที่เติมเต็มซึ่งกันและกันนี้ได้รับการตอกย้ำผ่านทางองค์ประกอบที่ตัดกันทั้งบนตัวเรือนและหน้าปัด เกิดเป็นเรือนเวลาสไตล์ร่วมสมัยสำหรับชายหนุ่มคนเมืองที่มีไลฟ์สไตล์แบบแอคทีฟ และเชื่อว่าเมื่อคุณได้เห็นภาพทั้งหมดนี้แล้ว เมื่อถึงวันที่คุณได้ลองคาดนาฬิกา H08 บนข้อมือ คุณเองก็จะปล่อยใจให้คิดถึงความสัมพันธ์ที่ตนเองมีกับห้วงเวลาต่างๆ เช่นกัน

As a member of the press and a follower of Hermès, I have double the reasons to treasure the copies of Le Monde d’Hermès delivered each season to my office. For the Autumn-Winter 2020 issue, I was particularly impressed by a few photographs used to tease the public about the Hermès H08 watch, slated to be formally introduced earlier this year. The description read, “These four photographs showing the same scene from different angles were all taken simultaneously, at exactly 10:08 AM”.
I thought it was cool and refreshing, especially in an industry where computer rendering is heavily used. No additional information was offered in the article, and I did not have time to pursue the topic further.
By chance, I discovered, from another brand communication around the time of Watches and Wonders Geneva 2021, that the photographer behind those images is Barbara Probst. The Munich-born, New York City-based contemporary artist is known for her use of photographs shot simultaneously by several radio-controlled cameras to provide multiple perspectives of the same scene. The resulting work is reminiscent of the movie Vantage Point, but the snapshots are of only one fraction of a second in time.
The brand did not say this but I will – the philosophical musing encouraged by this photographic concept parallels that of the watch’s model name. The zero in Hermès H08 stands for emptiness while number eight, when placed horizontally, resembles the infinity symbol. This duality on the sportive timepiece is further reinforced by how the case and dial elements contrast against one another in a decidedly contemporary and urban way. And, maybe, when you put that watch on your wrist, you too will be inclined to think about your very own relationship with time.
