Recently, Luxuo featured an article on the most expensive house in San Francisco. But what is the most expensive house in the city next to the most expensive mansion in the United States?

The mansion, aptly located in Bel Air, Los Angeles, was the real-life home of billionaire and philanthropist Andrew Jerrold Perenchio for a good 30 years. Fans of sitcom might also recognise the mansion as the lavish neoclassical house from the 1960s TV series “The Beverly Hillbillies”. For a famous house (or house of the famous), the estate is hitting the market with a $245 million price tag. One might be surprised at the revelation that this estate was originally listed for $350 million. Even at a whopping $105 million price cut, the Bel Air mansion is still a potential record-breaker in the market.

Besides Jerrold Perenchio who died in May at the age of 86, the estate only traded hands twice. Architect Sumner Spaulding built the colossal home in the neoclassical, French chateau style in 1933 before selling it to hotelier Arnold Kirkeby in the 1940s. The home was then rented out for the set of the “Beverly Hillbillies” and later sold it to Perenchio for $13.5 million in 1986 – who during his time, doubled the estate to almost 10.4 acres, according to property records.

A walk through this opulent house is like taking a stroll through an 18th-century chateau. The home boasts several upscaled formal rooms, a ballroom, a 12,000-bottle wine cellar and a panelled dining room.

On the outside, walls and hedges separate gardens, fields, a tennis court and a 40-car parking area. A nearby 5-bedroom guest house also comes with a 75-foot swimming pool and a pool house.

The most expensive house is now listed by an octad of agents: Drew Fenton, Gary Gold and Jeff Hyland of Hilton & Hyland; Drew Gitlin and Susan Gitlin of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties; and Joyce Rey, Jade Mills and Alexandra Allen of Coldwell Banker Global Luxury. According to the listing, the property will only be shown to pre-qualified buyers.
