หลักที่ดิฉันใช้เสมอมาคือ รัตนชาติต้องเป็นคุณภาพมาเป็นสิ่งแรก จากนั้นมาดูความสมบูรณ์ของรูปทรงที่ต้องได้มาตรฐานสัดส่วนถูกต้องในระดับยอดเยี่ยมและที่ขาดไม่ได้เลยคือดีไซน์ต้องล้ำนำสมัยอยู่เหนือกาลเวลา เห็นครั้งแรกแล้วแล้วต้องทำให้เราหลงรักในทันที ปัจจุบัน เครื่องประดับที่รังสรรค์ขึ้นภายใต้แบรนด์ระดับโลกก็จะเป็นอีกหนึ่งเหตุผลที่นำมาใช้เป็นตัวเลือก เป็นอีกรูปแบบหนึ่งในการลงทุน ด้วยเพราะแบรนด์ชั้นนำเหล่านี้ต้องใช้เวลากว่าสามชั่วอายุคนในการพิสูจน์มาตรฐานของแบรนด์ ฉะนั้นการลงทุนในเครื่องประดับก็ต้องมีความหลากหลาย ไม่น่าเบื่อ คือมีทั้งระดับความสวยงามของอัญมณีและความมีชื่อเสียงของแบรนด์

หลักเกณฑ์ในการเลือกการแต่งตัวในชีวิตประจำวันของคุณสุมณีคืออะไร
เลือกจากโจทย์ของงานหรือกาลเทศะ ถ้ารับจะไปร่วมงานนั้นๆ ก็จะตั้งใจเลือกที่ดีที่สุดเพื่อให้เกียรติเจ้าภาพและทีมงานผู้ที่อยู่เบื้องหลัง ที่สำคัญมักเลือกอะไรที่แสดงออกถึงความเป็นตัวของตัวเองเสมอ แต่ไหนแต่ไรสิ่งที่เลือกก็มักจะแตกต่างเสมอ คล้ายๆ เป็นแกะดำ เพื่อนๆ ก็บอกว่าดีเหมือนกันเพราะไปไหนด้วยกันมองหาได้ง่าย ไม่หลงกัน ผู้หญิงอย่างเราๆ มักถูกเปรียบเป็นดอกไม้เสมอและดอกไม้ที่สวยที่สุดคือดอกที่สมบูรณ์แบบในรูปแบบของมันเอง จะให้กุหลาบมาสวยแบบกล้วยไม้ก็คงไม่เหมาะใช่ไหมคะ
เคล็ดลับในการดูแลตัวเองที่ปฏิบัติมาโดยตลอดคืออะไร
กฎเหล็กเพียงข้อเดียวของดิฉันคือ คำว่า “วินัย” ดิฉันเคยเป็นมะเร็ง ถ้าเป็นมะเร็งแล้วไม่ควรทานเนื้อสัตว์ ดิฉันหักดิบเลยค่ะ เป็นวีแกนมา 9 ปีแล้วตั้งแต่เป็นมะเร็งค่ะ เดี๋ยวนี้ไม่ได้รู้สึกอะไรเลย เห็นเพื่อนๆ ทานที่มีมันๆ ทอดๆ เห็นแล้วเราก็ไปบอกเขา เขาก็หาว่าเราเป็นมารคอหอย แต่เห็นแล้วก็สงสารเพื่อน ทานมากๆ ก็ต้องผ่า นี่ก็ผ่าหัวใจมาแล้วสี่เส้นนะคะ ความที่อยู่กระทรวงต่างประเทศ ทูตมีการเลี้ยงกัน กินแต่ของดีๆ เพื่อหน้าตาของประเทศชาติและก็เพื่อหน้าตาของเราด้วยนะคะ ก็สรรหาแต่ของดีๆ กินดีเกินไปก็เป็นยาพิษนะคะ เห็นสัจธรรมค่ะ

เวลาจะซื้อเครื่องประดับหรือเพชรสักเม็ดให้ศึกษาให้ดี เวลาจะซื้อให้ซื้อที่ดีที่สุด ถ้าตอนนั้นงบยังไม่พอก็รอก่อน เก็บเงินให้พอแล้วค่อยซื้อ เวลาขายจะได้ขายง่าย ไม่ใช่ซื้อง่ายแต่ขายไม่ออก เป็นการลงทุนที่ไม่ดี ดีไม่ดีต้องเอาใส่ตู้ปลาไปเลย คำแนะนำนี้มาจากประธานบริษัทประมูลที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลกแนะนำเอาไว้ค่ะ
One of Thailand’s most celebrated personalities shares with us insightful advice on the correct approach to invest in diamonds and gemstones.

Luxuo Thailand had the honor of interviewing Khun Sumanee Gunakasem, known to many as “Thailand’s Barbie,” whose luxury lifestyle and wealth put her in the upper echelons of the country. We often see her at high society functions, dressed in her unique style and accessorized with splendid, eye-catching and equally unique jewelry. Welcoming us into her home for an interview, Khun Sumanee allowed us to get better acquainted with who she is as well as the principles she follows as a buyer and collector of jewelry.
How did you begin collecting jewelry and rare objects?
It all began with my first pair of earrings. I was 27 at the time and had just accompanied my husband, Pracha, who was the Thai consul general, to live in Hong Kong. It was there that I began to buy my own jewelry to add to what my mother had passed on to me. Hong Kong is one of the world’s top three jewelry markets and an especially important market for jade. Gemstones in the jade family belong in the internationally recognized five major categories of stones. And the two global auction giants both have offices in Hong Kong. As for rare collectibles, I remember clearly that I made my first bid at an auction in New York, where I was living with my husband who was at that time the Thai ambassador to the United States. I bought those items to decorate the ambassador’s residence, where we hosted receptions for diplomats from countries with whom we have friendly relations and other dignitaries as well.
What are your favorite gemstones?
I love every one of the stones I own, because each one has been chosen with care and meets the highest international standards. These include color, which must be the best of that gemstone family, as certified by the best internationally recognized lab. In terms of size, the proportions must be well balanced and aesthetically pleasing. The cut should allow optimal light reflection, and the stone must be clean and flawless. To sum up, I look for the best stones because, to me, they represent a kind of investment. But if I were to name just one that I love the most, it would have to be emerald. Emerald is my birthday color – Wednesday – and the minerals in this family that are of the level of quality produced by the best mines are now almost impossible to find.
What are your selection criteria for gemstones? Brand? Story? Design?
The first thing I always look at is the quality of the stone. Then I’ll look at the shape: it must have excellent proportions. Timeless design is also indispensable: it must make me fall in love at first sight. And if a piece of jewelry is the work of a world-class brand, then that’s another reason to consider if one is buying jewelry as an investment today. Because these leading brands have proven their standards through three generations or more. And when buying jewelry as an investment, you need to have variety in order for it not to become boring. The beauty of the gemstones themselves, as well as the reputation of the brand, must be present.
Which of your collectible pieces have never been worn?
There are quite a few – earrings especially. When I see earrings by artisans of past generations, I practically have to snap them up on the spot. But there are two pairs that I have a special love and affection for, perhaps because I bought them as keepsakes as well as to support a beautiful young lady who is the youngest granddaughter of a respected friend of mine.
Which of your jewelry are rare or one-of-a-kind items in Thailand or the entire world?
It gives me joy and a deep sense of pride to have the opportunity to own a piece of jewelry that is the only one of its kind in the world. This token of love was painstakingly custom-made by a world-renowned jeweler. Great care was taken – from the selection of the right technique to use, to the introduction of new technology to create a prongless setting – by a leading global brand who has served several European royal houses. It’s one of the beloved pieces commissioned by the first chairman of the Royal Dutch Shell Company for his dear wife, Lady Deterding.
Besides collecting jewelry and rare objects, do you have any other favorite hobbies?
My hobby, which I began as a young adolescent and have continued to this day, is dancing. As a young girl I was very tall and walked with a stoop. My father had me take dance classes to improve my personality and posture.
How do you define “fashion”?
Fashion, to me, is something that’s popular for a very short time. It doesn’t last as long as style and is merely a small component of it. Style, on the other hand, is something unique and individual and part of one’s identity, and it is those stylish individuals who inspire the development of fashion. It all goes around in circles.
How often do you shop for clothes and jewelry? Do you set a budget, and what is your most expensive purchase?
I never set a budget for my purchases. If I love what I buy, then that’s all that matters. Spending money isn’t as hard as earning money. You can even spend without getting out of bed. Just the other day I was shopping for things to wear in the garden. I thought I was ordering just a few items, but when my finance people sent me a check to sign, it was for a mid-six figure sum. Fortunately, it was in baht. As for dollar-denominated purchases, the most expensive item I have bought at auction is emerald jewelry. I telephoned in from Thailand to the auction, which took place in Geneva, and paid in dollars. I bought a ring and earrings and they are my most expensive purchase ever. Even the pink diamonds my husband bought for me at auction – at a very high price – do not equal this emerald ring and earrings set, which cost in the mid-nine figures plus commission.
What are your rules for choosing what to wear on a day-to-day basis?
I choose my clothes based on the event or occasion. When I agree to attend an event, I’ll choose from my best pieces out of respect for the host and the behind-the-scenes team. I usually choose something that expresses who I am, and my choice has always been different. Something of a black sheep, you may say. According to my friends, this makes me easy to spot and keeps them from losing sight of me. We women are often compared to flowers, and the most beautiful flowers are all perfect in their own ways. You can’t expect a rose to have the beauty of an orchid, can you?
Do you have any self-care secrets that you have always sworn by?
My one iron rule is “discipline”. I am a cancer survivor. If you have had cancer, you should avoid meat. I gave up meat cold turkey and have been a vegan for 9 years. I don’t feel any craving, and when I see my friends eat fatty or deep-fried food, I talk to them about it. They call me a killjoy, but I do it because I feel sorry for them. By eating a lot of these things, you could end up needing surgery. I myself have had a quadruple bypass. All those years I was with the Foreign Ministry, having good food at diplomatic functions for the sake of the country and for my own sake as well. We go in search of good things but too much of a good thing can become toxic – I now see the truth of this.
Can you share with our readers any good advice that you have received?
Do your homework well before buying jewelry or diamonds, and buy the best available. If you don’t yet have the budget, then wait and save up until you are able to afford it. When it comes time to sell, you’ll have an easy time. If something is easy to buy but hard to sell, it is a bad investment. The only use you may get from it may well be as aquarium gravel. The chairman of the world’s biggest auction house gave me this advice.
