After securing 300+ million new users in the first quarter of this year, partly due to the fact that people stayed at home and spent more time online, the video-sharing platform TikTok has announced that they have hired Kevin Mayer as their first CEO.
Nicknamed Buzz Lightyear for the apparent reason, the 58-year-old was most recently Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and International Division at Disney. That is to say, he was responsible for streaming services Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu. At one point, some sources believed that he might have taken over the role of Disney CEO when Bob Iger announced his resignation in February but that did not happen.
Mayer will be the American face of the Chinese company, overseeing global activity of TikTok from the firm’s office in Los Angeles. Also, he will be serving the double duty of COO of ByteDance – TikTok’s parent company.
According to a Bloomberg report, ByteDance itself is worth more than USD 100 billion presently. If its employees number rises to 40,000 this year, ByteDance will have the same headcount as Alibaba. TikTok is certainly fast-growing and a force to watch – it is the only social media platform with the capability to rival Instagram and Facebook. How far it can go remains to be seen, especially considering the typical suspicion the US government has on Chinese tech firms and the problems that alone can bring.
