Presently, the idea of circular economy is more widely adopted in business world as there are growing concerns about resource utilisation efficiency and environmental sustainability. Fashion industry is also embracing this idea. Most recently, Gucci and The RealReal announced their partnership to launch an online shop, set to last until the end of this year, for the dedicated sales of used Gucci products.

The RealReal (NASDAQ: REAL) from San Francisco operates online marketplace for authenticated, consigned luxury products. According to the company’s report, the resell demand of Gucci’s products on their platform has been on a continuous rise – 19 per cent up this year. Moreover, Gucci’s clothing resale value is 2.3 times higher than average compared to other brands sold on The RealReal. Consignment of Gucci women’s and men’s clothing on The RealReal has saved 230 metric tons of carbon and more than 10 million litres of water so far.

“Together, we’re shining a global spotlight on resale that we hope will encourage all consumers to support the circular economy and join us in reducing fashion’s carbon footprint,” said Julie Wainwright, The RealReal’s founder and CEO.

Additionally, for every purchase or consignment of Gucci products in the United States via their platform, The RealReal will plant a tree through a non-profit organisation called One Tree Planted. This means the parties involved in this circular economy are contributing directly and indirectly to the conservation of natural resources at the same time.
