Watches & Wonders Geneva และ Baselworld ตัดสินใจยกเลิกงานในปีนี้ เพื่อความปลอดภัยของทุกฝ่ายที่เกี่ยวข้อง

งานแสดงนาฬิกาประจำปีของสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ทั้งสองงานออกมาประกาศยกเลิกการจัดงานในปีนี้แล้ว หลังจากที่มีรายงานพบผู้ติดเชื้อ Covid-19 ในประเทศเป็นรายแรกเพียงไม่กี่วัน เดิมทีนั้น Watches & Wonders Geneva (ชื่องานเดิมคือ SIHH) มีกำหนดจัดงานในวันเสาร์ที่ 25 ถึงวันพุธที่ 29 เมษายน และ Baselworld ที่เมืองบาเซิลทางด้านตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศจะจัดวันพุธที่ 29 เมษายนถึงวันอังคารที่ 5 พฤษภาคม ทั้งนี้ การจัดงานทั้งสองครั้งล่าสุดในปี ค.ศ. 2019 มีจำนวนผู้เข้างาน 23,000 คนและ 81,200 คนตามลำดับ
Watches & Wonders เป็นงานแรกที่ออกมาประกาศยกเลิกงานเพื่อความปลอดภัยจากเรื่องไวรัส จากนั้นหนึ่งวันรัฐบาลสวิสก็มีคำสั่งงดกิจกรรมใดก็ตามที่มีคนมารวมตัวกันเกิน 1,000 คน จนถึงวันอาทิตย์ที่ 15 มีนาคม แต่หลายฝ่ายก็เชื่อว่าจะต้องมีการยืดระยะเวลาดังกล่าวออกไปอย่างแน่นอน ดังนั้น ภายในเวลาไม่กี่ชั่วโมงหลังจากที่คำสั่งดังกล่าวออกมา Baselworld จึงตัดสินใจประกาศยกเลิกงานบ้าง พร้อมระบุวันที่จัดงานของปี ค.ศ. 2021 เป็นวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 28 ถึงวันอังคารที่ 2 กุมภาพันธ์
การตัดสินใจยกเลิกการจัดงานเช่นนี้ถือว่าปลอดภัยที่สุดแล้ว เพราะในแต่ละงานก็มีพนักงานของแบรนด์ นักข่าว ตัวแทนจำหน่าย ซัพพลายเออร์และบุคคลอื่นๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องมาร่วมงานนี้จากทั่วโลก บ้างก็มาจากประเทศที่มีจำนวนผู้ติดเชื้อไวรัส Covid-19 สูง ในแต่ละวันเจอกันก็เชคแฮนด์ทั้งวัน จับนาฬิกา ลองนาฬิกาแล้วก็ส่งต่อให้กันไปทั้งวันในห้องที่ไม่มีอากาศถ่ายเท หากมีใครสักคนที่สามารถกระจายเชื้อได้ในระดับที่เป็นข่าวคุณป้าประเทศนั้นหรือคุณปู่ประเทศนี้ก็เรียบร้อย
ตลอดระยะเวลาที่ผ่านมา นักสะสมและผู้ซื้อนาฬิกาทั่วโลกต่างคุ้นเคยกับการที่ได้เห็นการเปิดตัวนาฬิการุ่นใหม่ๆ ประจำปีในงานทั้งสองนี้ แต่ในเมื่อปีนี้ไม่สามารถจัดงานได้ บริษัทผู้ผลิตนาฬิกาก็จำเป็นต้องหาวิธีการอื่นเพื่อนำเสนอผลิตภัณฑ์ของตนต่อไป ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการโชว์ทางออนไลน์หรือจัดอีเวนท์ระดับประเทศหรือภูมิภาคตามความเหมาะสม เรื่องนี้ก็ต้องคงดูกันต่อไปตามสภาพสถานการณ์ และไม่ว่าอย่างไรเราก็จะใช้ความพยายามอย่างเต็มที่ในการรักษาคุณภาพการรายงานข่าวนาฬิกาของเราตลอดทั้งปี

The inevitable has happened – both major watch fairs in Switzerland are now cancelled due to Covid-19 virus concerns. Official announcements came within days of first reported coronavirus case in Switzerland. Watches & Wonders Geneva (formerly SIHH) was scheduled to take place from Saturday 25 to Wednesday 29 April 2020, and Baselworld in the northwestern city of Basel was to follow from Wednesday 29 April to Tuesday 5 May 2020. The latest editions of both fairs in 2019 attracted 23,000 and 81,200 visitors, respectively.
Watches & Wonders was the first to announce their cancellation out of health concerns. Baselworld followed suit one day after, within hours after the Swiss government put a ban on any gathering involving more than 1,000 people until Sunday 15 March – an order most believe to be extended at a later time. Baselworld also revealed that their 2021 edition will come earlier in the year from Thursday 28 January to Tuesday 2 February 2021.
The decisions were understandable and very much reasonable. These fairs bring together brand employees, journalists, retailers, suppliers and other relevant parties from around the world including countries with high Covid-19 case counts. Given the number of hands shaken and watches handled in a typical show day, as well as the shared air in closed space, it takes only one super spreader to turn either one or both fairs into cluster infection sites.
Global watch collectors and consumers have been accustomed to seeing big batches of novelties introduced at Watches & Wonders Geneva and Baselworld. Now the watch companies will have to redetermine how to reveal the watches individually through a combination of online channels and local/regional showcase events.
