Lilium completes a new funding round worth USD 275 million. Founded in 2015, the German company positioned itself as an aviation company of the future. At the core of its business is the emission-free Lilium Jet – a brand new breed of small aircraft with vertical take-off and landing capability, designed to offer regional air mobility service that is faster than rail or road but also competitive in terms of pricing.
The Lilium Jet can seat one pilot and four passengers while offering a range of 300 kilometres with a top speed of 300 kilometres per hour, thanks to the use of 36 all-electric, low-vibration and low-noise engines. The first full-scale prototype was successfully flown since last year at a speed exceeding 100 kilometres per hour. Further flight test campaigns are needed before serial production of the Lilium Jet can begin.
Several companies have already invested in Lilium – this includes Atomico, Freigeist, LGT, Obvious Ventures and Tencent. Earlier in March, Lilium was able to raise more than USD 240 million in an internal funding round led by Tencent. The number was extended to USD 275 million this month as Lilium welcomed Baillie Gifford as a new investor. The amount will help the firm weather economic turbulence as it proceeds towards the goal of offering their “air taxi” service via their own app in major cities of the world like Los Angeles, New York City, London and Shanghai by 2025.
Presently, Lilium is headquartered in Munich and employs more than 400 people. It is ranked by American business magazine Fast Company as number 7 on the list of Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Europe for 2020. The total investment fund raised to date is USD 340 million.
