How love is defined may vary with individual interpretations. But no matter which era we live in, the romance of Romeo and Juliet continues to tug at the heart strings. Luxury jewellery maison Van Cleef & Arpels translates the tragic love story of Verona to create a new themed collection titled Romeo & Juliet.
Love that ends in tragedy has always clasped the attention of readers and listeners, and with no exception, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet consistently remains engraved in the hearts of people around the world, despite the hundreds of years that have passed since its conception. The pure and soulful courtship of two young people from warring families that ended in suicide was a bittersweet climax. The epitome of star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet could only be together in death.
Nevertheless, even tragic love stories have sweet and captivating moments. This immortal drama still enchants readers with the couple’s exchange of words and continues to bring excitement through scenes of secret rendezvous set amongst the elaborate backdrop of enthralling Verona during the Italian Renaissance.
The characters, context, setting and architecture of Verona inspired Van Cleef & Arpels to create this new high jewellery collection that utilizes various gemstones. Each piece combines different stone cuts, setting techniques and shades, including subtle colour gradients and “Pierres de Caractère” to convey unique emotions.
The paired Romeo and Juliet clips are one of the most visibly artistic designs in the collection. This striking three-dimensional piece is crafted from white gold, rose gold and yellow gold. Romeo is presented in blue – the colour of the Montague family – with blue sapphires and lapis lazuli. Meanwhile, Juliet is found in red – the colour of the Capulet family – with garnets and rubies. The mauve toned gems in the bouquet being offered represent a blending of the blue and red, signifying the harmony of the clans after the passage of the ill-fated lovers.
Curves and geometry, typical of jewellery in the period of the Renaissance was merged with the architectural style of Verona in the eponymous necklace. A bright blue sapphire weighing 23.86 carats lies in the centre of the pendant, mirroring the three other shades of sapphires arranged on the necklace. The piece can be worn in several ways, including one single necklace, a short necklace with bracelet or two bracelets with a clip.
Lastly, the balcony scene where Romeo and Juliet pledge their love to one another under the cover of darkness is one of the most memorable for audiences. The “Balcone” or “Balcony” white gold clip features this, complete with inlaid emeralds, tsavorite garnets and diamonds in gradient shades to mimic lifelike trailing ivy vines from the diamond balustrade. On the opposite side of the pendant, the figures of the two lovers are carved out of rose gold, holding hands in a heart-warming scene that is not visible when the clip is worn.
With these various creations and more, the maison has deftly shared this story of romance and its intricate details through the use of symbolism and crafts, connecting various artistic circles, especially in the areas of drama and visual arts.
